My levels: proof that hard work and time will get you a good level

Archive: 14 posts

Basically this is an encouragement thread for those of you that feel you can't make a good level, trust me it can happen it just takes time and effort. Now it took me 6 actual levels before I made my first great level, now yeah that seems like a lot but it was worth it when I finally started getting results I wanted! I remember starting with my first level about being in a mutant labratory, it was horrible! lol, ended up getting a 2 stars but I didn't let that discourage me, i kept creating, eventually starting my holan wars series on lbp 1, with both levels getting an average of 3 stars, better but still not what I was looking for. I didn't publish the 3rd part because lbp 2 came out before I finished but it still gave me the extra practice to experiment. Now with lbp 2 I began work on a new level, i completely new holan wars series, the first one, although my best yet so far on the heart rate, still only got 32 dislikes and 64 likes. Now we come to my latest level Holan Wars 2 Enter Salem, after all the hard work and time spent creating I got a level I was truly happy with, and what does it have currently? 16 dsilikes and 113 likes, I was very happy with this considering the likes are around 7 times more than the dislikes, I consider that a very good ratio consider at 7,000 plays you'd only have 1,000 dislikes. Now I am hard at work on the next level in my series, working hard once again to try and top my last level, hopefully I can pull it off. But just an example of how hard work and time can make you a good level creator people, so don't give up! 2011-03-02 15:14:00

I agree; I got LBP1 a year ago, and I had 17 levels published at one point in time, none of them recieving more than 50 plays except for one, which got me enough plays that people hearted me for the create trophy. I was never a good creator, ever. But I REALLY wanted to get something out there that people would love. Then I started to build something in LBP2, and it started to pick up, and get better, and even though it took 3 weeks and 60 hours, I got my level, Industrial Platforms, which I love. It is completely on grid, and it has the simplest game mechanics, yet people love it. Kinda like the Li'l Platformers; simple, yet very fun. If you really want it, you can create awesome stuff. Inspiration plays a huge part; after that, I got to meet Lockstitch, who showed me inside create mode of Granite Gardens, and once I saw how simple everything was, I began creating my next level, which is coming along beutifully. Just get inspired(but DO NOT copy![I mean it!]), make something you like building, and if your determined, youll create something great. And dont get bored halfway through and stop creating. Keep building, even though it makes you bored out of your skull, because if the results are good, itll make you feel fantastic.2011-03-02 16:27:00

nicely put! 3 things can really help you create a good level, 1. inspiration( look at some of your favorite games and why you like them) 2. imagination ( think big, what do YOU think would be really epic for a level?) and 3. and probably the most important, KNOW YOUR LOGIC! it is so important that you know how to do tons of logic or you might not be able to create these levels that you have imagined

oh and a ps. don't force create, as in if you don't have any ideas at the time don't just try and force something without thinking about because it often times will come out as sloppy

Agreed. I remembered my first level was... meh, but over time, I learned more tips and tricks, and eventually my create skills became seriously awesome. Though I have nothing to publish besides my music level (1 boo 39 yays, took awhile to make ) I'm pretty happy with myself.2011-03-02 16:52:00

I'm still trying to further develop my skills, lately I've made versus levels to test my visual appeal, I haven't got to many plays but i think people like them, with only 173 plays between them and 62 likes and 18 dislikes also with 20 hearts I'd say that it's okay but I haven't had to many people play them to say that they are any good. But I'm still trying to get better at making good levels.2011-03-02 19:47:00

I've found that you can put a lot of work into a level, but it doesn't get much attention because it's hard and different to the norm :/ I agree with you though, personally I'm not happy with anything below a 10:1 ratio and it takes a lot of work to get that (:2011-03-02 21:19:00

Well him and another guy played my level, they liked it, the other guy sent me a friend request and a message saying he had played it with lockstitch and liked it, I was like O.O can you introduce me? So he did, and then me Lockstitch the other guy and some girl who had no idea who lockstitch was were playing around, and we were talking about Locks levels, and he asked us if we wanted to see one, I said YES, the other guy said YES, the girl was like "sure" and so he took us into the Granite Gardens create mode, where I learned more in 10 minutes then I have in school so far this semester, and me and the other guy were drooling everywhere, while the girl had no idea how incredible and desired her position was in the LBP community. It was interesting.

Yeah, all of my levels that I made in LBP1 were horrible. Then, I made my first level in LBP2. It was actually pretty good. Now I'm working on a series of levels, and it's coming along great; the first level, which is only half way through, is way better than any other level I've made.2011-03-02 22:44:00

My levels need plays! They are great in visuals and gameplay but now in LBP2 it's so hard to get as many plays. Any of you guys willing to try it out? It's called, "Apple Here... Apple There... [Relaxing Platformer]" it's a nature themed level with a nice unique touch xD2011-03-03 00:02:00

I find it a little hard to believe though,I worked really hard my level Castle Platforming in LBP1 I took the time to sticker it and make it detailed but it took 8 months for it to get at most 237 plays and close to like 5o hearts with 4 stars. It was a good ratio of good ratings, comments from others saying it was an awesome level but it barely got many plays. It just seems that no matter how hard I work no one will ever notice my work! 2011-03-03 03:10:00

I worked 9 months in my last level.

I get 35 plays.
like 3 hearts.

But lots of fun making one of my best levels ever. And we all know the story

to many levels are crap.... but 10000 plays.

The diference..... i know im better. So dont feel bad. Make the levels for fun. Maybe you get one or two plays. But that 2 persons will love your work.

to those talking about plays I will say that making a great level won't get you plays always, but that wasn't what i meant by my thread, just that it is still a great level (: , i'd say after like 100 plays or so you know what the general rating ratio is gonna be2011-03-03 12:03:00
