How to create a good level in easy steps

Archive: 2 posts

Hey, thanks for viewing this thread, it means alot

This thread only really appeals to those who want to create levels who think they need some help or assistence, if you already know how to make a level, or at least the stages, i wouldn't really advice this thread.

Anyway, now that's out of the way, i'm going to go through some nice easy stages explaining along the way to the best of my ability in the time i have. I hope this helps anyone seeking the help they wanted.

First of all, when beginning a level it can be hard knowing where to begin. You can often sit there for several hours deciding what to base your level around, but don't worry, that's normal as it shows you want it to be good, and not rushing into the first idea that pops into your head.

Your gonna want to think of a theme, or a story, depending on the type of level your hoping you create. I personally create platformers, so the story part i can't really help with.

So a theme. Where to begin? Well.. there are plenty of choices out there. You can base it on something simple like a desert, a jungle, a spacecraft or something completely different. To help you decide, look at other players levels and decide on what style and theme best appeals to you, then your pretty much ready to go.

So you have your theme, now you gonna want to begin designing. You have two choices here. You can either begin designing the level right away, which is only recommended if you know your confident with your style and ideas, or you can begin designing ideas to place in your level, which i recommend, but it's your choice.

So after making ideas, you want to begin your level. Now, what i and alot of other creators do is to first create the level in cardboard and basic materials. Design the whole level how you want it to look, this doesn't include sounds or music or anything detailed just yet. Just design the level basics, like the floors walls and landscaping.

After your happy with your level design, your now going to want to pick around 4-8 materials to use in your level. I personally use 6, but it's up to you. Your going to want to choose a different material for each layer, or each peice of detail in your level. This sounds complicated? Well.. If your designing a level using all 6 layers, your most likely gonna want to use 4-6 different matterials, unless of course you have a specific theme for the level that requires that you use less, such as an outline level.

Next, your gonna want to add decorations, such as pillars, seaweed, dirt of walls or whatever. You shouldn't over use the decortations too much as it takes up alot of thermo. If you re use decorations, like repeat the same one throughout the level, it adds a constant them and keeps the thermo as low as possible. Decorations can be from goodies bag objects, decorations or stickers, just make the level more lively.

Now add sounds. Sounds include sound effects when things are triggered, music for the level and things like that. Try and make the sounds suit the level as best as possible, but once again, don't over use them, and try making your own sounds by combining or overlapping some of the pre made ones to give your level a custom effect.

Now, finishing touches. Your gonna want to go through your level, test your obstacles, check for any faults, get some friends to play test it and go through as much as possible. If you still have some thermo left when your done doing this, try filling it up, but like i said, don't over use the tools and items just because they are there or new. Also, this includes thing like placing checkpoints, adding cameras and things like lighting. Every peice of detail helps create a better atmosphere.
Remember, you don't have you use all the themro, sometimes less is more. You don't know how many times i've seen levels ruined by over doing with the decorations, lets not see that happen to you either.

Anyway, sorry if i seemed a little rushed for time towards the end, i explained it as well as i could in the time i had given.
If you still don't understand or need help making levels, feel free to add me on PSN. My PSN name is RacingCreed.

Hope this helped, and hope to see more great levels from you!

As a side note, you should be in play mode a lot. Whenever I add anything, I go into play mode. Good tutorial, though. 2011-03-02 12:19:00
