score board level links = epic fail

Archive: 26 posts

hello again guys,
i have realised that the forcing people to play the next level you made from the score board level link will only get you unhappy faces!!

my reason for thinking like it = i made an average level racing around a track and when you hit the score board i had it linked to another of my moon levels what was olmcos prof x edited slightly for lbp2 it only got bad ratings, no one finished it and its among the most detailed levels on the plantet..

anyone else had these problems?

It's standard procedure for me to Boo an unannounced level link, no matter how good the level is.2011-03-01 11:04:00

I'm sorry. I would reccommend putting a level link right before the scoreboard and have a magic mouth/note say: "would you like to try another one of my levels?" if they don't they can simply just walk right over to the scoreboard, instead of being forced to play it.2011-03-01 13:05:00

Hrrmmph.

As one of those people who dislikes that kind of underhanded linking, I'll explain:

I play levels online because I either selected the Dive In option or I thought the level I chose might be interesting.
At the end of a level, I either dislike the level, like it, or just want to play something different.

If I disliked the level, I probably wouldn't want to play another level you made, as it could be equally as bad.
If I liked the level, the only insta-link I'd accept is more of the same thing (like if you have a story in your level or you have different stages of your game). I don't like it if the level is completely different.
And I might just want to play something different, or play a level I had queued or had heard about. In this case, forcing another level will only increase my annoyance as I have to manually back out of the level.

Really, it's just personal preference. I'd only insta-link levels if it's a continuation of your previous level or if it acts as a hub for your other levels. Otherwise, use optional level links or level keys.

Hope this helps!

Unless its part of the level (like an extention, but don't want it to bea sub level, or the sequel, and such, I don't really like being forced to be linked to the next level, seems like a desperate call for plays. :/
(Some peoplr link their levels in a loop like that, for plays, which I really dislike...)

I'm not quite harsh enough to rate a level bad for this, but if I'm taken to another level that isn't joint to the previous, I won't bother giving the level a chance and just leave.

However, if you make a level that I'm impressed by, I'll often check for other levels by the creator myself anyway.

Id have to agree with you on that... Its never good to force people into something... and option of choice is far better.

Every time I'm forced to play a level after completing one I rate both levels with boo's and I say that's the reason, I don't care how good the levels are. It's very annoying to me.2011-03-01 20:36:00

If you think it this way: You visit site where is what you are looking for and pop-up window pops out.

Even if the level were good I wouldn't rate it well.

Unless I understand why it is there like level series or something like that.

lol. Although I have never actually played a level with this kind of level link, it seems like a terrible idea and a cheap trick. Depending on it's reason of course.

I do it in my menu level, BUT it's only to have somewhere for the player to be warped if they choose one of the transit options. I'm going to delete the levels anyways, so I really don't care about that. So I have an excuse.

I think I do it in my level "Diabolical Machine", but that link goes back to the menu. Not for plays but because it's to save the player from having to click and click to go back to the menu. It's also VERY short. I'm going to delete all those levels anyways, so I really don't care. Even if it gets 1,000,000 hearts, it's going bye bye when the first sector is complete and ready for the community. As for the "Diabolical Machine", that won't be made into an actual game for quite some time. I think it's one of my best parts of a series.

Scoreboard link to a completely unrelated level for no reason at all? Uh well I wouldn't like that so I don't think I'd end up ranking the level very high.
What gets me playing an authors other levels is usually levels that are good enough to get me to visit the authors earth.

Who the hell do you think you are? Maybe you're the one who should grow up a little by understanding that people have opinions?

Also, level links are made so that you can basically have more thermo for a level, not for a cheap way to get plays. No one will play a level they didn't ask to play, there are almost 4 millions to choose from.

In my opinion, level links are best used in two scenarios.

1. To expand upon a level, as part of the same level. If the linked levels are all part of the same story, then I don't care how many level links they use. My current work in progress uses 4 level links (5 levels total).

2. As part of a level gallery or showcase. Although I wouldn't advise forcing links. Offer the option.

Forcing links to unrelated levels seems a bit underhanded. It would be like going to a public swimming pool for a relaxed, leisurely dip, and then being forced by the pool staff to use the diving board. "Get your hands off me!"

But why? Why shouldn't someone feel cheated when you force them into a level they didn't select? You should be happy that someone found and decided to try your level amongst the 3,000,000+ that are available in the first place. Think about what goes into someone finishing your level:

You were fortunate enough to have someone stumble upon your level.
They decide that it's worth their time to try.
The network was actually fast enough to load the level without the player getting sick of waiting and backing out.
The player was good/mature enough to actually make their way through any difficult-to-play/difficult-to-understand portions of your level.

When all of this is done, YOU decide what they should play next? That's a bit presumptuous on your part, I'd say. When you finish playing a level, you're already on that player's "Earth", so you can certainly play their other levels if you want to.

*facepalm*

You realize what you're doing, right? You created a post asking for people's opinions on why people don't like instant level links, and then you reject people who give you their opinion. It's like you only posted this to justify yourself, hoping that someone on the forums would sympathize with you. The problem is, no one likes non-sequitur instant level links, no matter how good the level is.

Don't ask for people's opinions unless you can handle someone saying something you don't like. If you want that kind of feedback, just listen to Stephen Fry's narration all day.

99.9% of time I quit out of level links if it is an unrelated level.
It's cheap and annoying.
Give the players the option of a level link or scoreboard!

Happened to me the other day, was a good level too. I simply posted a comment saying 'enjoyed your level but didn't appreciate the level link. I can make my own choices, thanks'

Maybe they will take heed...

unless the scoreboard level link links me to the next part of a level, something related to the level I was just at or a level gallery, it will annoy me and I will probably just leave to my pod unless the level instantly catches my interest. though I do think booing a level regardless of how good it is because of a scoreboard level link is just petty, its like anything good in that level is null and void because of that one annoyance.2011-03-02 20:15:00

I don't rate it badly, because I don't play and therefore can't see how good it is, but it's very annoying and clearly a beg for plays/hearts.2011-03-02 21:54:00

I use level links in my Prius story to take the player between the different parts, BUT I also have an optional scoreboard after that if they want to quit and come back later. It's a good solution, too since links don't work 100% of the time.2011-03-02 22:04:00

Agree with most of you -- this practice is annoying and just seems desperate and dishonest. And it can get really bad when some people have level links going all over the place and you don't start with the "right" one. I've had it happen where I play a level, then play another one of the person's levels, only to be autolinked back to the first (unrelated) level I already played.

It's been really refreshing the few times I've seen it where someone puts an optional level link to another level of the same theme next to the scoreboard.

Like someone else said, if I really liked a level, I nearly always check and see what else the person has because you are right there anyway.

I think regular level links are a fantastic addition to LBP2 -- I use them in my level Junkyard Jailbreak to create a three part level that would be way too big for one. It's intended to be one experience and gets scored as one play because there really is only one beginning and one end. Works great; avoids thermo and size restrictions. The first part is pretty full on the thermometer and the second part uses nearly the entire max width and height. I've also seen people have part 1 be a large platforming level and part 2 be a big boss fight, which works well.

I'm not really sure if I can think of a good use of the scoreboard level link. I guess maybe if you want each level to have it's own scoreboard or if you want to have a serialized "game" that's released one level at a time as you finish them. I released all three parts of mine at once, so I guess it didn't make sense for me. But yeah, people sure abuse it.

I think it's intention is to segue to an optional epilogue or closing cutscene, the way that the developer used it in the story mode.
