The Academy Awards

Archive: 21 posts

Hello my fellow sackpeople.
This is a thread for all of you that watched the Oscars (http://oscar.go.com/) last night. You can just discuss the movies who won, the one's you wanted for to win, if you simply didn't care. Did you find it fair? Did you not find it fair? Did you think Anne Hathaway was cute? Anything that has to do with the Oscars last night

One customer of mine was there at the show as a vip, and a friend of a friend won an Oscar.
That's my stuff

Anything to do with the Oscars? Ok.

And then you gotta read the description to make it that much better:

The winners bound onstage. They hold their prize aloft. They speechify. Inevitably, someone says "Wow, I didn't think it would be this heavy!" And Jasper Spittingsworth sheds a tear, knowing full well how little Pepe struggled with weight issues in the workshop.

All of the movies I wanted to win did pretty well, except Tron : Legacy, but it got nominated. I also liked Inception, The Social Network, and Toy Story 3. All did well. I thought Justin Timberlake was hilarious. As usual.2011-02-28 15:05:00

What annoys me (what! you mean you're annoyed by something Macnme?! - How unlike you!) - is that they never go "Actually - this year was rubbish for films - you all did a rubbish job and should hang your heads in shame!"

If they did that, then maybe the oscars would actually mean something other than a self-congratulatory pat on the back.

I thought the "show" was simply abysmal. Hathaway did her best to save it, but she was fed some of the worst lines in Oscar history (including that ridiculous and awkward musical number raging against Jackman). And Franco (who has fast become one of my favorite young actors) was stiff and looked alternately uncomfortable and bored.

Anne was stunning in every gown however, and clearly has the chops for the job if they could just manage to write, direct and produce a show that isn't a virtual train wreck. How can a town so full of talent manage to produce such utter crap year after year? But even at that, she was also still part of the problem... Um.. Anne... First rule of live performing: if you screw up your line, you just move on. You do not yell "FLUB!" and start over. Real professional there, darlin'.

As for the movies... I was happy for Natalie Portman and Randy Newman, and that The King's Speech did so well.

Yeah, the host script/writing is why I don't watch them anymore.
It's pretty bad most of the time.

Shouldn't this be general media?

...
The King's Speech did so well.

I feel almost bad that I dislike that movie winning so many awards. It's a fantastic movie, it really is, but it's almost entirely Oscar fodder. If anyone gets what I mean? Everyone should already know this movie is a great movie, but it completely overshadowed everything else. As for the show itself, from the award winners, it was a bit predictable. Which is disappointing.

I thought that's what this (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=51374-The-Razzies) was.

But they still get to attend a s****y party, with a nice buffet and an award to take home.... rather than the public birching & then a procession through the streets where the public get to spit on them and throw rotten veg - which is more than they deserve.

That'll teach them to waste an hour and a half of my time!

There now isn't a single day on the calendar when Hollywood isn't patting itself on the back with an award show for their god-awful output.

I just think they get paid way too much. ...why does entertainment reap more $$ rewards than some other more important job or service? That rotten veggie parade does sound fun though! I have a head of lettuce I found in the back of the fridge that would do wonders!

..but on topic, I never watch these shows. Horribly self serving and I can't remember how many winners have been on my losers list. lol

As much as it was Oscar bait, I did love The Kings Speech and am glad that it did so well, however I also think Geoffrey Rush should have won best supporting actor instead of Christian Bale. Who, if we're honest, has as much emotion in him as a beaten-down potato.

Tron wasn't even nominated for best music, which is just silly.

Thank god I didn't watch the show, it sounds terrible.

You really think so? I think Bale is a fantastic method actor and is my favorite current actor.
To each their own I guess, but out of curiosity, just why do you think that?

Rush is one of those actors where you forget that it's Geoffrey Rush - and instead focus on the character he's creating.

When I see Christian Bale - all I see is an untalented balloon on a non-descript stick... he has no "character", which is what you need for a "character actor" in a supporting role.

Whoa now, don't get me wrong Macnme, he's a fantastic actor as well. No doubt about that from here, but I'm disagreeing completely with saying Bale has no "character."
Just look at most of his movies even before the Batman series. Hell, Harsh Times (I think that was the name of it) was a great movie despite what trailers make it look like, thought he was far from a stick in that.

Move a light while he's filming and you'll soon see how much emotion he has.

Horray for late replies!

I guess there's quite a big element of personal preference in this, I just keep remembering him in Equilibrium and for me his acting completely destroyed the movie.

That's funny, because Equilibrium is about the only film I've been able to stomach him in.
It was American Psycho that *really* put me off him.

Wasn't the entire point of Equilibrium that you were on a drug, that made you emotionless? And his end goal.. Spoiler alert.
Was to stop it, so everyone could go about feeling again. Basically the only times he acted as anything other than a robot was when he met the resistance, failed the emotion detector machine thing, and finally smiled at the end. Oh and the whole bit with the wife and kid and all that.

Basically the whole movie is like that. It's a decent flick, had it's moments, but it's not that good of a movie to really criticize acting I think. But ah, everyone has opinions. Like Macnme hating American Psycho, possibly because it just has "American" in the title.
