Concerning Prizes

Archive: 17 posts

Seeing that there is a limit on the number of prizes that one can collect, I'd like to know your opinion on this. Do you like to collect prizes, or do you generally avoid them?

I'm just trying to get a general idea on how much I should concentrate on hiding prizes in my level. All the prizes that I provide are all made by me, by the way. I also like to put at least a small amount of effort into my objects.

I know, due to the item limit, I can't put a too large a number of prizes in my levels (like 50+), as much as I'd love to. I also don't want to put too few, because I'm sure there are people out there that enjoy the levels more if there are things to hunt for, whether they end up keeping the items or not.

What do you think would be a nice balance, at least given the current storage space thee MM has allowed us?

I don't really like collecting most prizes because, well, they're usually worthless.

Then, there lies the matter of the ones that ARE useful usually just being given as level complete prizes- so, if you have something really worthwhile, hide it or something. But don't just have a bunch of random junk, espeically if it's in plain view.

Right, most unlockable item people put in there level are big time gaylord.

I'm thinking my question goes more along the lines of this... Do stickers count against your prize collections? (reason I ask, is... well, I've got a ton of stuff that goes in mine as prizes... (hey 14 rooms of "hell" on the fingers and brain... ). Besides, who doesn't want a sticker of the Mona Lisa? 2008-11-24 14:25:00

Hmmm... my personal thoughts are that it depends on the complexity and originality of the object. When you think of something really cool, then people will wonder how you did it. Those sorts of things make good prizes.

If it's a poor item though, like a malfuntioning rocket sled or something that would take half a minute for me to recreate with no stickers or moving parts, then it's not worth collecting.

I'd put it down to comparing it to the items and stickers that are in the original MM levels. If it's that sort of quality, then certainly include it. If it's boring, then don't.

As for the number of items you give away as prizes, I guess that would depend how many cool objects and stickers you actually have, and how difficult they are to get. If the level is boring, I don't think people will play them over and over just to get a full item list.

If the level is good though, and to an extent that is in the eye of the beholder, but if it has good replay value, then it can be worth hiding stuff away. Extra cool items will just help people to come back even more.

for the prizes. make only ones that are in that level collectable. the developers did that all the time and it worked out great because you could see their uses and stuff

Cheers!

Yeah that's the idea that I'm going for. I'm also placing the prizes so that they are avoidable, so the player can decide if they want to get collect them or not.

Is it wrong for me to set all my prizes to not sharable?

Not it's not bad at all. That's what I'm going to do when I place prizes in my level. Don't sweat it.2008-11-25 21:37:00

What I am doing as my level slowly nears completion, is leaving various points with prize bubbles in the way. Once the level is done, I can have a look back over what I have created, and reflect on the good and mediocre prizes that I have. Then I can put them in easy spots, hard spots, level cleared, all got or aced spots respectively.

Leaving points along the way though makes it easier than editing them in later I think. Or at least, having a plan of roughly where they will be sure helps.

To be perfectly honest, I never use prizes. Ever.

I don't like the idea of using other people's objects in your own level. Makes it much less personal. If an object is particularly well made or looks real nice then I'd say the prize is worthwhile as you can learn from it.

I just wish there was some other form of prize available that could be used whilst playing not creating. Not that I can think of anything...

I avoid prizes like no tomorrow!!!

I'd rather jump in a pit of fire than get a prize bubble!!!

In fact, I think I'll have a level where there's a pit, but instead of fire instead, I'll just fill it with terrible prize bubbles!!!

I liek to use premade stuff, but I use the handy dandy ,aterial changer. That way people dont notice its been made by Mm, and you could even fool the original item maker himself!

Stickers can be used while playing, as well as creating.

Making the objects non sharable at the end can prevent other people publishing with your stuff in it, if I understand right.

Sometimes I imagine things can be boring, but yet it would still be fun to have a play with. Seeing other people's sleds, for example, helped me to design a good sled for myself with the situation I had. I did not use people's objects, but it was handy having some references as I built.

Certainly, there can be drab items. But barring the useless, they don't have to be NOT given out, I would think. Just make them easy to access.

There aren't many prizes that I use, so I find it annoying to have to delete them all the time. I really would not mind prizes at all if there were some way to review and reject them at the end of a map. (That map should still show that I 'collected all objects' though, even if I reject them.)

I hope image import comes in soon and allows transparency, so that I can give out some worthwhile stickers. I'm having a hard time thinking of prizes to give to people that I myself would find worthwhile.

I only put prizes in my levels if I think I'd like to have them.

Think of yourself as the player and determine whether you'd like to have your prize or not.

Personally I love collecting prizes, half the fun is to really go well - treasure hunting on the levels and find everything! I think that 5-10 is a good number of prizes for a level.2008-12-05 21:44:00
