How much is a decent PC?

Archive: 15 posts

I was thinking of getting one so my band can record some more demos, it doesn't have to be anything pro sounding but I would like more than just one song to burn to the CDs we hand people, this thing we used to use omg it was a piece of crap, i would like something better than that. I just don't know what to look for, or like, what dictates how fast a computer can do things? and how much does that cost to have that part of the PC be good, ya know what im trying to say?

and im sure I could buy some uber pro machine for 3000 bucks that would be great, I don't want that, I really don't like recording and mixing and stuff, it just needs to work ya know

Sorry, but I don't know of one that can help produce songs for you. Try going for a Dell laptop (check their website (http://www.dell.com/)). They're pretty cheap.

Funny. That's almost as much as mine cost (give or take a couple of hundred bucks more).

Maybe 700 usd? You'd get an awful lot of computer.
Also what dictates how fast and reliable a computer is? Every single part does. They have to be great in unison for things to work well.

When I recommend computers, for people who need them fast and cheap, I put in a core2duo clocked at 3.2ghz, a midrange GPU (5770, 460), 4gb of DDR3 ram and a reasonably fast SATA HDD.
Edit: If you are doing heavy stuff like video editing or cramming 20 VSTIis in nuendo, I think you gotta hit up things harder.
Also, the LGA755 adapter the C2D lives on is gonna be SO DEAD in maybe two three years. It's only still relevant because of the standstill in progress consoles has caused.
If you want to "future proof" your box, I guess you'd be looking at AMDs sockets or something like that. But people want power right now, for a cheap price, and that's my recommendation.

Now if we're talking laptops? Don't get Acer. They melt, overheat, break and the customer support is abysmal.

Edit2: Oh oh and I'm no computer expert or anything, I just learned a whole lot by myself. Don't take my word as an absolute truth, even if I tend to make it out to be like that. Poor language, I'm sorry. Conference with other tech savvy friends and compare their opinions and you'd get some pretty good results.

Also when I say 700, I mean the tower alone, but you'd do fine with 600 on the box and 100 on the display. Make sure the computer has all the proper inputs so you can record whatever it is you want to record.2011-02-28 07:07:00

A good computer won't make you sound good.2011-02-28 10:08:00

Alex said it with the gentleness of an elephant in a tiny shop that sells swarosky, but it's true.
I recorded my stuff back in the late 90s with a PC that costed like 1500 $ and that now would cost like 40 $, but I had good microphones to capture the sound.
So my take is that you can have a cheapish computer but you need really good mics.

If it were me, I would go visit a pro audio store and see the specifics for a pc to run whatever software and hardware goodies you would need to do this. In many cases you can build a pc for much less than buying it. For example, I think I built my current machine for a bit over $2400 which exceeded specs of pc's being sold for 3800 - 4200 bucks at that time. The parts are much cheaper, but it does take some talent to mix and match system components as well as assemble it properly. By that I mean simply buying components will not yield you a great pc as parts need to play nicely together.

I dunno though.. I still like a nice big mixing board rather than messing around with pc software.

Also, Macs are the industry standard for Recording etc for a reason.

They can typically process things alot faster (especially audio) - but you're better off with something external, like an audio interface that processes the sound before it hits your PC - it'll also help with real time play-back of your recordings - as that takes extra processing power.

It sounds to me, if you've already got all of your recording equipment - that you are just looking for a CD burning PC - but it's not a great idea to burn a music CD faster than x4 - as any faster you can get clipping/skipping on the track.
Just about any modern PC will have a x4 or faster CD ROM.
After that you are talking about professional burners that can burn fast with no clipping/skipping - but that'll cost you

My advice - buy a Mac

Or, make sure the PC you get has a nice fast processor with plenty of RAM - and most importantly - a quality sound card fit for recording purposes.
