Paint Mode

Archive: 13 posts

I think that Mm should allow you to actually paint or draw on materials or objects instead of putting tons of pre-made stickers.
It would be like paint on windows. This is just an idea but it is something I'd like to see in the future. 

That sounds really cool. I would love to draw my own designs on materials. They should add a "texture mode" where you make your own textures to put on materials.2011-02-28 00:16:00

There was the one that was just stickers, i forget the name off-hand, but it was a lot of hand-drawn looking "whacky" characters and such. Anyways, that one, i thought, had had some good stuff, especially in the foliage section. The rest of the stickers that came along with the stage or costume packs, i rarely use, and really just take up space on my stickers page...i really regret the Marvel pack, 'cause there's 'bout nothing in there i'll use (at least the Metal Gear ones gave us decent bullet holes).2011-02-28 02:25:00

Ya but the paint mode would get rid of the use of endless pages of stickers2011-02-28 02:38:00

I think the stickers would still come in quite useful if they had a paint mode because I doubt that everyone will be happy with what they can paint themselves on their and to be quite honest I am annoyed at why we only have stickers to put on materials and costumes rather than a paint mode but that's LBP, it's always been like that but paint mode would be really awesome so that we can create and use many different colours but sadly I can never actually see this happening
Also tbh I haven't purchased a sticker pack on its own either, I don't care for stickers

there was a level shown ages ago (think it was from LBPpodcast) and it showed user created stags and trees. we still don't know how they achieved it2011-02-28 23:37:00

This level? http://lbp.me/v/s6tcjx/photos

Stickers, Corner Editor, Patients and above all... Talent.
Currently you mimic paint mode by using materials to paint with, sticker those with the colors you desire, and then snapshot that to create a sticker to apply to your object.

A paint mode for materials would be a nice addition and eliminate some steps, but I have a feeling it would be very tricky to implement. Resolution would be a critical factor since the game engine has no idea what scale the texture is going to be used at. It would have to rasterize your painted strokes to be efficient. Then there is the issue with UV's and projection. I haven't really looked into it but I think the current stickering method is doing some pretty fancy stuff behind the scenes, possibly unwrapping material UV's as they are modified and re-projecting stickers into that UV space combining several stickers into a single, or tiled, texture maps on the material. Doing this with painted materials become much more difficult. One way to do it would be to slap down a canvas sticker, basically a blank sticker that you can paint on once it is placed. This solves any issues with resolution and projection since it would use the existing "sticker" method, but this wouldn't allow you to paint outside the borders of the canvas.

yep! that's the one Osprey! has anyone yet worked out how it was done? those trees and stags look like legitimate content and yet they were created

Like I said:

If I remember right, you can jump off the cart that takes you through the level and use the sticker tool to see how it was done. They used a lot of custom stickers and liberal use of the corner editor.

It just comes down to talent and patients... but mostly talent. That level is a true work of art.

Why hasn't anyone equaled it yet? Well, that is a matter of opinion. But, something like that takes a lot of time to accomplish in LBP. Most talented people have lots of projects on their hands and they experiment in many different mediums. Just be glad when they pop up and give them the respect they deserve.

A paint tool could help make something like this easier to accomplish, but it still comes down to that talent factor.

a thought occurred to me when watching the NGP reveal again, Osprey!!! we all know by now that MM are working on an NPG version of LBP2 and that Sony want games to be able to be played on the PS3, then continued on the NGP and back again. so what is it that the NGP has that the PS3 hasn't... A TOUCH SCREEN. and what would MM me able to do with a touchscreen? an art package

here's one thing we know about the NGP:

Talking about how the camera could be used for texture to implement into Little Big Planet, a game already announced for the NGP.

just bringing the community together
