Pencil Plains

Archive: 21 posts

Hey again everyone, ever since Wood's Edge I have been working hard on my next level (one of the perks of being homeschooled), Pencil Plains. It is another platformer, with art as its main theme. I really had fun creating it, and if you enjoyed Wood's Edge or The Ship Yard, I humbly recommend you try this one. If you encounter any glitches or sections you think should be changed, please let me know. I appreciate your feedback, and I hope you enjoy. Thanks!

loved the concept! The only thing that i think could have made this better is adding a story line. the difficulty was just right and the use of the paint balls was awesome. the musical notes were hard if you rushed, but that made it good. altogether id give this a 9/10!

Thanks for the feedback!

I have a tendancy to make my levels more abstract and straightforward rather than have a storyline. I like to have the level speak for itself. But, I do believe I'll add some sort of story to my next level. Thanks again!

Cool theme - very colorful and playful with a good use over oversized objects like broken pencils, staplers that opened, etc. The paintballs were a really nice touch -- it's always fun to see your sackboy get completely covered in paint.

When I saw the music sheet and bounce pads at the beginning I thought to myself that you should have integrated the bounce pads into musical notes that made different sounds so I was going to suggest that. But then that's exactly what you did later, so that was cool.

It was actually a little tougher than I thought it'd be given the light-hearted theme and the description, but it wasn't too hard for me.

I did manage to walk behind a chalkboard near the beginning and almost couldn't get back out, so you may want to see if you can prevent that. Nice job.

Appreciate you giving my level a shot (below).

I love the style! Really embodies the whole "craftworld" mentality of LBP. Especially with all the paintballs everywhere. It's like arts & crafts class gone crazy! I usually don't like levels with lots of electricity in them, since I'm kind of clumsy with the platforming, but you used the infinite life doors, so much appreciated there!

The only part that really gave me alot of trouble was the very last platforming bit with the two swinging jump-pads. Mostly, it was my fault, but a few times, I would hit a pad near the side, and they would shoot me sideways instead of up. A few times, I got to the last pad, and it just didn't bounce me high enough to reach the ledge. Might have just been me though. As I said: clumsy at platforming. I had the infinite door, so after 30 or so tries (not exaggerating unfortunately) I finally made it to the scoreboard.

Great work! Thanks for creating and sharing!

Thanks for the feedback! I think I've had the bounce pads shoot me sideways before too, all I need to do is strengthen the gryoscope I think. I'll look into it later today. Thanks again!2011-02-27 12:06:00

Hey i just finished your level and i have to say it is lots of fun. I really like the visuals of the level theyre unique and the platforming itself is quite good too perhaps a bit repetitive at the end with all the bouncing but this is a minor complaint. Great level.

Can you try mine too please and id appreciate any feedback.

Sure thing, thanks for playing!

I'm pretty busy today, so I'm not sure if I can get the fix in for some of the aforementioned glitches in the level, but I will definately get them in tomorrow.

Played your level for playing mine! I really liked it. It looked beautiful, perfectly placed object. Felt like I was in a messy room with a bunch of doodles and pencils everywhere.

The musical notes were a little difficult, but that's a general timing issue for the springs and that is hard altogether.

I really liked the bouncepads pushing you to the fire, they were perfectly placed so you don't jump too high! I loved that.

Thanks everyone! Needless to say, I managed to update the level today, despite my time constraints.

As a hopefully-one-day aspiring musician, I especially had fun making the music notes. The tunes tabbed out in the background are actual tunes from a couple of my favorite game series, as is the order of notes the bouncing notes play (and chords). One thing is for sure: as much as I like the LBP soundtracks (which I like quite a lot), I will attempt to make my own soundtrack in my next level.

Thanks again for playing!

Alrighty, I fixed the swinging-platform glitch where they tilted when you hit them. I also made the last swinging platform bounce you a bit higher. A little bit more polishing was done, and things that needed tweaking were tweaked. The level should be smoother now. I may make the bouncing-note area easier in the near future also.

Thanks to all who have played. I've been really busy lately, so I'm not sure when I'll have the time to play your levels, but I will when I get the chance.

This is a wild, chaotic level that has quite a bit of flair and personality stuffed in it. It seems almost equal parts jumbled and disorganized as it is also creative and surreal.

I liked the bright colors and clean shapes used throughout. I like the use of the paintballs to dab some of that color onto the player without breaking up the flow of the gameplay.

There are a few sections that have multiple routes to follow with makes things interesting though this is not done very much in the level. The score bubble distribution is fairly smooth throughout the level but I found the challenge curve to not be as clean.

I had the hardest time my first playthrough on the spring mounted musical note section. If you did not have the infinite checkpoint at that step I'm sure I would have rage-quit that first time as I literally spent twenty lives or so getting across.

This may be in large part to my poor spring platform jumping skills but is seemed that the first two notes had a very low spring tension and I could not jump up to the third platform. Instead I needed to use the bounce pad to get up there but the stupid sackboy would layer shift from the rear to middle layers as I jumped and would hit his head on the first platform. (I thought that layer shifting should only occur for landing on objects and not on ascending behind objects.)

Once I finished the level and played through it a second time I had the spring platform timing down and could pass this section easily but it did take a good bit of frustration on my first play to get to that point.

Other than this one section I found that the level was not too hard in any particular area but challenging enough to keep people paying attention.

I think the strongest aspect of the level is the visual chaos and progression of elements and ideas from start to finish. Good work.

If you are able would you be able to try out my Tutorial Tutorial and drop me a bit of feedback? Link to the level post is in my signature.

Thanks for the feedback! I will take a look at your level when I next log on.

I recently updated the level, fixing a few more glitches, and I made the bounce pads leading to those notes propel you higher. I also made it so you won't hit your head under the first note. Not really much I can do to make the bouncing note part easier, but I will look into it. I may be able to change the strength on the springs, perhaps that would help.

- Can't see hazard below broken pencil.
+ Last obstacle was cool.

A few rookie mistakes (poor layer switching, unclear direction/hazards), but worth playing.
No feedback required.
