The Cookie Challenge

A lengthy platform level... put some time into it and I think it came out fun. Even after playing it over and over over to make sure everything worked. Has a time challenge so hopefully it adds replay value. Leave any comments here or on lbp.

With a challenge, yeah, that's true.
Somewhat simplistic in terms of design, but overall enjoyable.
Those spiked wheels you have to grab onto makes me sad because of how bad at LBP I am.

Probably tons of fun for a more experienced player.

I did however feel I did not deserve the death from the burning lantern on the left. It's placed in a way that could easily kill you once you open the hatch.

For everytime I ran through the level Ive never hit it so I figured no one else would. I removed just in case, cause you never know. I did try to add a bit of a challenge so its all about timing your next jump. Thanks for the input. Appreciate the feedback. 2011-02-26 17:28:00

Nice job on this. Time had run out long ago by the time I got to the end so in that sense it is indeed challenging.

I agree that the spiked wheels were the most annoying part, and you have to go through them twice. You might consider placing some kind of shortcut so that players don't have to retrace their steps?

Nice obstacle course level with some interesting contraptions. I like the elevator and some of the sections you play two ways. The bounce pad creatinator was fun, of course. Style was nice and cartoony - I liked the frogs at the beginning.

You could probably tweak a few areas to limit the frustration and keep the pace fast and frantic:

-- Rolling fire at the beginning could be eased up just a little. They're not just fire logs, they're bombs...on fire! I found it a little tough given LBP's jumping mechanics and the angle of the ground. If the bombs were just a touch smaller it would help. And maybe a higher camera angle to better illustrate the two layers.

-- I agree that the spikes were a little harsh and annoying. One less spike per wheel would probably be good. Along with that, make sure the bounce pad in between has enough kick that landing anywhere on it gets you over to the other side. One time after finally getting past the first wheel, I landed on the near edge of the pad, but couldn't make it to the next wheel.

-- Think about extending the score timer. As it stands I think very few people will have any clock left when they finish on their first attempt. It'd be nice to get some points. You can still always try again for more points.

-- Maybe try to improve the level description. Might want to mention obstacle course. Probably don't need to say that it's fun...I hope all LBP levels are supposed to be fun!

Remember, you made the level and will probably be exceptionally good at it! I had a few issues with difficult sections on my platformer as well and made some changes based on feedback. I'd appreciate you giving it a shot (below).

EDIT: forgot to mention that I thought the volcano was awesome! But consider slowing down the conveyor belt just a touch. It's tough to keep up using LBP's slow grappling hook.

thanks guys and appreciate the feedback. I did test this level alot which is probably why I can breeze through it but Im glad to get some help on what needs to be fixed. I will fix these hiccups tonight and fix the clock so its alittle longer. Its at 7 minutes right now which I though would be enough. BTW Ive queued your levels2011-02-27 22:41:00

Excellent platforming to be fair, very good use of bounce pads.

However... I did come across two game breaking bugs:

- The first is at the bounce pad 'stair case', when I grabbed that switch I apparently let go too early. Too early so that the door began opening but then closed straight away (perhaps some of my momentum caused the switch to flick back up?), though not early enough that the bounce pads didn't retract. This meant I had no way of getting back up to the switch but the stone door was blocking my way. An easy fix I guess would just be to make the bounce pads push back out if the switch is in its off position.

The next bug happens straight after involving the lift mechanism between the two fire pits. I activated the lift to the first floor, but managed to fall forward straight off it and ended back down below. I waited for the lift to come back down but it didn't, and I couldn't see any obvious switch or something for me to manually bring it back down, but obviously there was no way for me to progress. Either have a railing pop up to stop the player jumping forward (the difficult way) or simply have a player sensor at the bottom which when activated calls the lift back down, easier to do but potentially more frustrating to the player. And there's also the chance of getting squashed!

A minor annoyance was the awkward camera angle of the flaming logs rolling down, a camera face on tilting down would probably be ideal.

With all of this I still had a lot of motivation to retry the level 3 times despite the reasons to do so not being my fault, so clearly the level is enjoyable. And it most definitely was, great work!

[EDIT: Personally I think the timer was fine.]

Here's a link to my level if would so kindly give me some feedback. =)

This is a fun level to play through with a wide variety of obstacles and power ups to use. It is like you wanted to have a section with each power up and the whole thing is tied together with a race platforming level.

Of everything in the level I had the most difficult time my first playthrough trying to jump high enough to grab the helping hand so I could swing over the fire block at the point where the rolling bombs are at.

I could get up the hill easily enough but the bounce pads did not get me high enough. When ever I tried to grapple the hand the grapple would instead grab the nearest bomb. Maybe the front jump pad has a higher bounce height than the rear one, or vice versa, but on the second run I could get over in one try. It was very frustrating the first time through though.

Just above this area a bit is a section with jump pads with short columns that have spikes on top. In the back layer is a crevice that is covered up with the barbed wire material. As I was bouncing along I layer shifted into the rear layer which I thing is unintentional. It seems that you can get into this back layer in a few spots.

I noticed that some of the power up removers were not glued down to the floor and got pushed around as I went past. Most notably there was the back or middle power up remover in the creatinator fire jumping section. The platform in the middle before the rotating circle bit.

I like the race aspect and found that I had plenty of time on the clock both playthroughs and there was a wide variety in obstacles to do which was nice. The backtracking parts in the two side shafts of the elevator did get a bit tedious on my second playthrough as it seemed to break up the smooth flow of the level, didn't offer new challenges and most of the bubbles have already been collected in the run out.

I noticed that I could shoot the bounce platforms from the Creatinator out onto the elevator but since there were no ways I could use the pads to get out of the level or cheat I don't see this as a real issue.

The level looks good as well, you've given the level enough visual density to keep thing interesting throughout.
Good work on this level.

If you get time I'd appreciate it if you could look through my Tutorial Tutorial level for a bit of feedback. Link is in my signature.

Overall I liked it, I don't have anything really bad to say, but I agree with the other reviewers that the spinning wheels with the spikes are easy to navigate over and annoying to navigate back.

It was really fun though!

Whew! (Hi blazin)

Like I said in my LBP2 comment, I finished in the nick of time. For sure, some parts were difficult-bordering-on-frustrating, but I personally wouldn't worry about the difficulty too much. My dismal score only encourages me to try it again! For me, having to Bounce pad up to grab the rotating spiked sponge ball was probably the most stressful part -- and I hear there used to be MORE spikes! I wilt at the thought.

The visuals and sound were top-notch. Nothing much to say here, except that I especially liked the starting area and that volcano (OH THAT VOLCANO!).

NOM NOM NOMing cookies throughout the level was a nice touch. After all, score bubbles are rare enough in community levels, much less customised ones. It's always nice to be rewarded, and nothing soothes a spiked Sackboy like a dozen cookies.

In conclusion: great level. Maybe you need some milk to go along with it?

+ I do not normally say this, ... I like your stairs and creative backtracking. I think I will use bounce stairs next time I absolutely need stairs instead of a ramp.
+ Your first scene out of the start circle was very detailed. It gives a real good impression.
