Global Weather Changer (Actual Weather)

Archive: 12 posts

Recently i have seen many games trying to add in rain storms, or Snow storms. But its ethier giant things of water that make a huge splash and take up alot of the thermo, or its little white blocks emiting and looking like crap and getting in the way.

If so many people try to make unsuccefull weather, why should we not want a global weather changer.

GLOBAL WEATHER CHANGER

-You can select from Rain, Snow, & Fog (I know it already in game)
-You can ajust the intensity of the storm from Sprinkling-Heavy Rain, or from Light Drizzel-Blizzard
-You can add special affects like lighting for rain storms
-You can choose if you want it to coat your objects (Snow starts to stick and collor your green meterial white)

Any other ideas for this? Did you like this idea? Do you wish to see this idea?

Yh i like this alot....buh also if the problem is the thermoetor then atleast have the weather not interact with objects in the scene....2011-02-25 17:30:00

I think the point of the new tools in LBP2, and just LBP in general is using inguenuity to create things like this, so that Mm don't have to hand us everything on a plate. If you want snow, try using the black sticker on hologram trick and make a frame by frame animation of several snowflakes falling down. The same for rain, and a simple logic setup can give light effects for lightning..
Hell, why dosent the community pull together and make their own weather logic chips and tools, it would be a nice project for a bunch of people and could be pretty helpful to just about everyone.

But your not getting it. You cant ever make them look real... like with a blizzard, you could never get the snow to come so fast and look so real that it blurs the place and sticks to the ground. If you even tried you would fill the thermo before you got done, and wouldnt be able to make a level. it would take 100's of small holograms emiting constantly to make a blizzard or heavy rain storm, and then they wouldnt even look realistic. But really how hard is it to make a weather conditioner, and to make it easy to adjust the intensity. With the tools Mm brings, they could do it in a few weeks, or less. But the problem with Mm is they hardly update with things we need, they ussualy just make costumes and somtimes add cool new things.

but you can make them look real given enough work, I dont mean emit holograms, I am talking about methods such as aniamtion with stickers on black stickered hologram, if you add enough frames it can look very real.
Im just saying that we, as a community, need to try these things properly ourselves, rather than just crying out to Mm to build everything for us. Otherwise, wheres the creativity..?

Think about it tho.... it would take way to much thermo... and no matter what you say it would not look real. Holograms would not look real, no matter how you made it holograms arn't rain nor are they snow. i have tried to make a weather objeect and i used holograms, i made it on a seguencer and made a ton of little holograms, the sequencer went super fast activatiing the batteries wich made it look like rain was falling. but the problem is it took up to much of the thermo, and honestly didnt look real at all.

I can build most things on my own, but this weather is somthing that is really needed. Truley there is not tool to make a rain storm or snow storm. I am not sitting here crying for alot, i just think that a weather conditioner would be great.

I have to agree with Matt here.

When we're talking about things like water, snow, etc. the tools Mm has given us don't quite cut it. These are purely aesthetic things that really ought to be optimized by Mm and put in the game as a quick and easy way to give that extra bit of atmosphere to your levels.

I agree with matt too, holograms and materials will never replace real weather visuals used in games. Through fog is global tweaker job and it already fuctioning since LBP12011-02-25 19:46:00

I think that the drain on the thermo there alone warrants consideration of this idea, especially when you factor in the added emphasis of cinematic tools in the new game. Personally, I've never really been happy with emitter-based weather effects in the game...there's just not enough control to get the subtlety you need. This should be something that's handled within the game engine itself, much like water, so that we have more time and thermo space for our levels.

More good ideas here:

Tho think about this, if water as it is, the flat, not-really moving water we get right now, already takes 2 bars of thermo, how much do you think things like reain/ storms, snow, and all that dynamic stuff would take?

Dynamic backgrounds, like Avalonia't already take like a bar or two, and they're barely doing anything, say you want water, a dynamic thermo, and a weather effect all at once, BAM more than half your thermo is already gone!

I'm just saying it'll probably take too many recoruces, lag up the place, and fill up the thermo way fast.

Nah. Water has its own dynamics and interacts with objects in the scene, thus uses eats up a certain degree of thermo. A simple rain or snow visual effect wouldn't have to interact with anything and therefore probably wouldn't cause a hit much more than fog would. If the snow started piling up on your scene objects, then I'd expect that would be computationally expensive.
