Larry's Library Labyrinth

Archive: 24 posts

I'm currently working on a project called Larry's Library Labyrinth, which will be themed around Larry's levels. It's mainly a platformer, but mini-games, puzzles and all that jazz will hopefully find its way into the level.

So far I think I've gotten about 10-15% done? As of right now, it consists of some very basic platforming and a mini-game which I haven't even completed yet.

I will update this post tomorrow with a few pictures of my level so far, and I'd like ANY sort of feedback there is to get! I've never actually finished a level except for a very mundane bomb survival. I want to make this level my first proud work that I can actually publish out there.

But as of right now, I need ideas. Ideas and more ideas. I've played through Larry's levels a few times to get some ideas for platforming but there really aren't any puzzles or interesting platforming sections I'd like to implement and expand upon. So I'm asking any and all souls out here to give me suggestions, advice and/or hints as to what I could create.

Be it a fun platforming section with the Grappling Hook, a puzzle with the Grabbinator or a platforming section that puts your skills to the test or vice versa, I'll take it.

Hear my cry, people, for I am a lady of pleasure... okay, maybe not.

*UPDATE*

Here are the promised pictures of goodiness. Please, leave me feedback!

These pictures almost link themselves together, so you start from the checkpoint in picture one and work your way around the level from there.

What I need is constructive criticism as to what I could add or what I should remove to improve the overall look and make it very Da Vinci-ish.

*UPDATE II*

Meet Arculad, the antagonist of the story.

http://i586.photobucket.com/albums/ss302/Archideas/Arculad.png?t=1300056320

This "little" mischevious Sackperson will be causing a great deal of trouble in the library as you progress in the level. More information about him will be revealed in the actual level. You'll just have to wait until then. <3

Looks really cool! Actually like A Davinci level, from what I can see.

Is it free-roam?

@ tomodon246, it's a basic platformer just like the Da Vinci levels, so there's a direct path you follow to progress.

@ramboo99, hmm... flying books as platforms would be kinda neat, but I'd probably have to make my own to make them stand up instead of lay down if I want some variation.

About the boss thing, I'd really love to make one, I really do. But what kind of boss would fit in there? A spirit that has possessed books and took on the form of a golem or something? There's alot of ideas to play around with.

Thanks alot for your ideas and compliments, though. They're much appreciated!

I got to say, the level name caught my eye...so..catchy.

Looks really close to the Da Vinci levels already, looks like fun too!

I also liked the idea ramboo99 posted, about flying books. Makes sense since it's a library, but kind of doesn't fit the theme. (how would they fly exactly? magic?)

@ sack-worker, if I run into any trouble with anything logic related, you'll be the first one to know.

@ VnGamer234, not to brag but I found the name to be pretty clever too. Magic? Nonsense, they fly by the power of your imagination! I think...? I'll think of something. Anyhow, they'd make a nice addition to the levels platforming.

Thanks for your positive comments, people. They're much appreciated!

Progress has been a little slow due to time limitations, but hopefully I'll get some work done on it tomorrow. In the meantime, please, drop any kind of ideas that are on the top of your head in a post here! Just about anything can be developed into something awesome for the level itself with a little bit of creativity.

Myeah, but they contain bouncing pads so that'll be my excuse. In all seriousness, I need moar different decorations that fit with the theme. :<2011-02-27 22:10:00

Have you tried placing the cobweb decoration in any corners so far? If you need decorations just go into the decorations page and switch the sorting order to By Theme. You can do that for the material and object pages can get Da Vinci stuff there too.2011-02-28 02:59:00

I have used cobwebs, quite alot in fact. Not in the same places, but in various corners. If you look at picture two, you can see some cobweb.

I'm quite unsure what kind of mini-game I should make use of in picture three. I figured you'd have to shoot the green area four times to progress further, but I can't seem to make it very interesting. Obstacles and the like won't move like I want them to. :<

Okay, the flying books are a little weird but i mean like moving books in the air.

And for the boss i like the gollem idea.
Or maybe a owl
you see because owls stand for wisdom
and the lvl has a lot of books (I think).

But does the level has a kinda story
Please tell a little about it if it has.

And maybe you can sometime do a arethmetic.
And if its wrong the lvl/a part gets harder
Its not a very good idea because it can be very boring.

Sorry for my English if there are any misspelled words or something

The level itself doesn't really have a story, no. You basically stumble upon Larry's library where Larry himself is. When you meet him, he tells you to look around a bit if you want to. (Obviously you do, right...?)

But I could certainly put in a story of some sort, like a section of the library going haywire for some reason, thus creating the golem or whatever boss I decide to go with. And it'll be your job to conquer the beast and save the library!

Making this post to bump and update the status on the project.

Progress has been very slow these past few days since I've been occupied with other things. However, I've finally started to build again so the project is on its feet once again.

I'm debating if I should make this project a two level part or keep it in one. I want to start off this level rather slow, letting the player enjoy some platforming and puzzling before the heat gets on, so to say. But I guess I'll have to wait and see how much the first part of the level will take up on the thermometer before deciding. I don't want the last part to be crammed in. :/

Maybe you can have a math problem on a chalkboard, but to find the answer you have to do some platforming. And when you put in the answer the wall opens up and you can use bounce pads or something.

As for the boss, I like the ghost idea. Perhaps there can be books that fly outa the wallls so you can go up there and smack the ghost in the face or something.

Idk, davinci's hideout is not one of my favorite areas, but the level sounds awesome. Tell me when you've finished, because i'm eager to play.

Could you explain that a little more? It sounds like a very good idea.

Just bringing another update to bump this thread.

Progress has been very slow still, and I blame Ms. Time for that. However, I've finally started to make some sense of logic, so I shouldn't get stuck as often now. There's still a ways to go before the level will be finished, but it's coming. I can promise you that, it's coming.

I'll include more pictures later on, I don't wanna spoil the whole level by taking pictures of it all.

*EDIT*

I've also updated the first post with a picture of the antagonist of the level!
