Tiki Trail

Archive: 20 posts

This is a strongly tiki themed platforming level. I love tiki's, jungle themes, vines, and all that jazz, so I whipped up this in a couple days, and I'm pretty proud of it.

It uses lots of in and out movers, and uses grappling hooks with them. I hope you get a chance to play it, and I'd love to give some feedback for your levels as well!

Thanks!

I'll get on some screenshots later, hopefully you can just trust that it's awesome for now haha

The cutscenes were a bit insulting/annoying, but other than that, not bad.

- Why the heck are there bubbles below the moving platforms? I dropped down to get them, then couldn't get back up so I had to die. :/
- Moving conveyor was a bit of a waste of thermo. You already spent the resources on it, why not extend it a little?
- Need to go backwards from checkpoint to get grapple.
- Cameras activate even when you don't reach the platform. Or when you enter the trigger radius again. (on final "puzzle")

I would heart to replay to get a higher score, but unskippables cutscenes really tick me off.
EDIT:
With fixes + <3
- Need to go backwards from checkpoint to get grapple.
- Cameras activate even when you don't reach the platform. Or when you enter the trigger radius again. (on final "puzzle")
^ above still happens though.
Still can't nail that big bubble platform combo, but that me, not you.
I'm happy with 2nd for the time being.

: sorry I'll fix those, and I thought I fixed that cutscene at the end... garbage. Oh well thanks for playing.

You made this in a couple days? Wow!

I really liked the theme and thought the art was amazing. It was very organic -- loved the moving vines. I'm jealous of people who can make beautiful levels without relying on the built-in backgrounds at all. Several inventive gameplay mechanics like the grabbable in/out moving platform were fun. Good use of space and layers.

I actually really liked the cutscenes, though, as a nice way of highlighting important items without having to change the visuals. I wouldn't even call them cutscenes, really -- more like hint camera effects. I don't think the fact they aren't skippable is a big deal, most aren't more than 2-3 seconds. I did have an issue on the rightmost of the two torches where it activated the cutscene more than once (jumping to it, then walking back left).

Great job! I'd appreciate your feedback on my level.

Hey thanks a ton Roo! Yeah it was a couple days of LBP bingeing so don't think too highly of it. I appreciate the feedback, I'll check out your level.

Also big thanks to you Midnight! The criticism you gave is the perfect stuff I was looking for, I'm glad to say I fixed everything, but I didn't really make the conveyor longer cause I didn't want to tear apart the whole thing just yet. But I made almost all the cutscenes skippable, and I removed the bubbles on the bottom where you had to die, added some more bubbles for more combo-ing. Also added more sound effects and changed the filter settings on them so you can actually hear them. I'll play your level later too!

Also the biggest glitch that was gameending at the end was fixed, ends up I thought I had the player sensor with the counter hooked up to camera, but it was really to a sound effect underneath that made it look like it was. Now it runs smoothly and is significantly less frustrating, I also loosened the tracking on some of the cameras to make it track like a platformer better. And finally, ALL cutscenes are one-shot, apparently I missed a few, but it's all taken care of now.

Thanks

Well, I played the new level, and it was wonderful! The only problems were that the cutscenes at the last part of level repeated when you went into their zone, and also the one checkpoint doesnt have a grappling hook. Neither was a problem for me however. The detail was stunning, I loved the music, and the gameplay was awesome! Yayd and given a heart, and I should note that only platformers are on my hearted list, and theyre all good ones at that; only the my favorite and the best platformers I find get on my hearted list. Currently I have 9. Keep up the great work!2011-02-25 01:26:00

Hey thanks ATM! I don't know why they repeat, I have them hooked up to the permanent switches, so that's really weird. Also if the checkpoint you're talking about is the one where you first emit a grapple hook, I kept it so you had to go back just to add a little backtracking, otherwise, I'm not sure which checkpoint you are referring to.

Thanks for another play through midnight (to be exact 6 )! I'm glad you liked it, that last room has been frustrating to totally fix, sorry for the trouble, but I promise I'll get it all complete eventually.

Thanks again!

Sure, also the checkpoint Im talking about is the one where theres a cutscene(which doesnt repeat anymore) that shows all the platforms coming out of nowhere. If you die, you either have to backtrack for a grappling hook or make a slightly difficult jump.2011-02-25 02:03:00

Hey i played your level and loved it. It has great visuals and some great platforming sections. I especially liked the part with the platform that moves in or out. One part that was a bit confusing is when you cant get a grappling hook after you die but this wasnt a big issue. Other than that i cant find anything bad to say.

Can you try my level and tell me what you think.

Very very good! Visually stunning and clever platforming mechanics!

Only thing is that you may want to make the torch lighting cut scene a one shot as it plays every time a player enters that platform. It resultet in me falling back down again a couple of times because the controls froze a bit too early.
Also, it could be a bit longer, unless you've ran out of thermo. Doesn't surprise me if you have.

Liked!

Hey Jay,

Sorry it took so long to give my feedback, but I'm quite busy with work and all lately. So here it goes. I really liked the whole "Tiki" theme to your level. I don't see to many levels that has that theme from beginning to end. Kudos to you on that. The platform was well constructed with enough variety of gameplay uses,ie: grappling hook and bounce pads. The moving platform was a nice feature to your level, but my only criticism is the slight confusion as to which layers the gas were to avoid. I got killed a few times trying to figure when to push the R1 to move from which gas layer was on. Maybe my only suggestion would be to change the camera angle a bit to avoid this confusion. If this was intentional, then disregard. I did have some complaints regarding the camera cutscenes, but it looks like you had them taken care of, so I will give your level another go at it. Overall, I really enjoyed your level and look forward to more from you. Great job.<3

Thanks guys! Yeah the gas is a little difficult to tell which layer it's in, I've heard a few comments about that, I'll change something there. Also those darn cutscenes at the end seem to be causing too much strife, I might just go in and trash them and redo it all.2011-02-26 00:16:00

Played it again and just realized you don't even need to activate the conveyor belt, you can just swing to the right. Not that the conveyor isn't fun...

I agree with one of the earlier comments, though - there is a checkpoint near the middle with a grappling hook immediately to the left. I had a tendency to miss the jump, come out that checkpoint and then plummet to my death because I tried to go ahead right away without going back for the grappling hook first. I realize it's only like 3 steps away, but I think it would be better placed on the right side of the checkpoint.

And not to insult you if you've already tried this (you obviously know what you're doing), but maybe you can fix the torch cutscenes with a player sensor hooked up to the camera through a counter that counts to 1? I haven't used cutscene cameras, I assume they have an input. That's how I did my magic mouths with cinematic cameras so they truly fire once (and don't even give you the triangle prompt afterwards).

And I think someone hinted at this too - make the proximity a bit smaller so they don't fire until you actually land on the platform.

Haha yeah I just haven't gotten around to fixing the cutscenes, I'm just too lazy I guess. And I keep forgetting to move that grapple hook...

Also Roo, I played your level, didn't get a chance to finish it, but I'll leave some feedback when I do!

Hey Jay! Thanks for the review of my level, now here is my in return:

pro
+ Great style
+ Innovative obstacles
+ Well used and placed decorations (I really liked the rotating flowers ^^)
+ Good lenght of the level

Overall its a great level with a good use of the LBP 2 features. The floating platforms that move in/out by pressing R1 are a (as far as i know) unique idea and was really funny (and a bit chaotic lol) in multiplayer mode.
So i gave you a yay and a big <3 Kepp up that great work!
