LBP2 - 1 month on

Archive: 10 posts

So yeah, as the title suggests. LBP2 has been out for just over a month now. How have you found it so far? Worth the wait? What do you see in the future?

Personally, I'm suprised at how little platformers I've seen. I thought they weren't around because they took longer to make, but I don't think I've played a single non-LBP1 platformer at all yet.

*resists urge to link platform level in the hope of getting one more play*

I think it's withstood the test of time very well, I mean my PS3 broke and the only reason I'm getting it fixed is to play this one game again. That and Last Guardian... anyway things will only get better as far as LBP2 levels go since some people like to spend months making levels that they've polished to perfection.

So yeh, it's still awesome. Not sure what they're going to do for LBP3 (if they're going to do anything) but I'll guess we'll just have to wait for that.

You joking right? ^^' Easier logic = we don't need to make platfromer predictible

Just as expected and predicted by many BETAees, Pinball's started to make its rise considering how easy it is to make one now.
Altho I must admit, there are some that are actually pretty good.

Space shooters are still dominating like they did on BETA tho, so who knows.

Good to see there's many people making non space/ pinball levels tho.

Are you joking? Platformers are my favorite ever, I search for good ones all the time, I can give you a list of well made ones if you like. The only other levels I really play are the ones my friend finds and shows me, otherwise Im either creating or platforming.

To be fair, I don't look that hard, but not many have pushed through to the Cool Pages, I think you'll agree.

But they added a lot of tools that wouldn't really be used in anything but platformers, grapple hooks, creationator, bounce pads etc.

Also, why am I joking on both of your responses >.<

In the end, people make what they want to make. The closest to a platformer I'm putting together is the hamstertron race me and my wife are cooperating on. I have a few other ideas and such, but I'm not a big platformer kind of creator.

One thing I do believe we can expect is sackbot-based platformers, where the game mechanics are changed. I've seen several test levels that looked interesting (a couple based on Marvel heroes come to mind, as does a Devil May Cry-based one), so I doubt LBP2 is the death of the platformer. It is just in its cocoon, changing into a different butterfly right now.

I keep seeing people say platformers take longer to make than other genres. They don't inherently require more time; obviously a 5 star platformer takes more time than a terrible 3 minute movie, or a minigame someone didn't even try to make feel like a finished product with multiple stages and proper presentation, but it's not so in all cases.

Personally, the most time I ever spent on a level was Free At Last in LBP1, and that took a week. I could bang out a pretty looking platformer full of bouncy, swingy gadgets & a few basic things that go up, down, around, and in and out in 3 or 4 days and so could most creators I know on here. People have put together single mechanical objects, sackbots, and vehicles that take weeks of building and testing, before even starting with level designs, obstacle & enemy concepts that compliment and challenge their creation's propensity for player interaction. Crafting your own play mechanics and gameplay through physical craft & maddeningly nuanced layers of logic is an entire extra layer of work. If you then build a level for your epic creation, you've essentially done the work required to build 2 levels, at the least.

It only seems like not doing a default sackboy platformer is an easier route because most of what's been on cool pages so far hasn't really shown 'complete' character builds, immense ideas, and all-out customization outside of a scant few exceptions. The platformers that are really taking time, are the one's with unique, fledgling concepts with plenty of room to grow and be utilized in a myriad of ways ala Holguin's Missile Works, or with their own player characters and play mechanics ala Mischeif Makers, Klonoa, Silhouette Mirage, Rocket Knight, Megaman, Bionic Commando Oddworld & Yoshi's Island's grab-toss-shake-jet-float-speak-posess etc... and are yet to come.
