The Skinny:
I made this level after seeing a lot of other basketball levels that just didn't seem to visually cut the mustard for me. I wanted to see if I could make a basketball game that was as much fun to play as it was to look at. I know there is more I could do to expand and improve the level and I?m interested in your honest feedback. I'm willing to give constructive feedback to anyone who takes the time to do the same for me.

The Game:
The object is simple; score more points than your friends. Once you get the hang of it, you?ll find the dunking is quite easy and making long shots isn?t that hard either. However, the real fun and chaos starts though when someone pulls the switch on top of the score board and blows it to bits. This will introduce a larger bounce pad to the game giving everyone mad hops! Once you have mad hops, it easy to reach the lights and trigger all types of danger for the sack people below. If you swing high enough on the lights you can even reach the rafters and unlock the bonus ball and introduce even more danger to the game!

Scoring:
10 for a made basket
50 for pulling the switch on top of the scoreboard
30 for a made basket with the bonus ball
-10 for encountering danger
There are other hidden point opportunities...

Tips:

You?ll need some help from a friend to get high enough to grab a light and swing onto the top of the score board. I?m still contemplating if I should give everyone the ability to do this right off the bat.
To dunk you?ll want to hold onto the ball until it just hits the rim or is very close. This takes a bit of practice, but once you get it, you got it.
On rare occasions the ball has gotten stuck in the hoop. To get the ball out, just use your control pad buttons to activate ?Hammer Time.?
Use your trigger buttons to change the music.
The speakers on the scoreboard will emit bombs.
The lights closest to the scoreboard will emit bombs.
The lights in the middle plane will cause the ?paint? to light on fire.
The lights in the front plane will cause the front plane of the court to light on fire.
The lights in the back plane will cause the back plane of the court to light on fire.


My wish list:

Advanced scoring system capable of providing more points for long distance shots.
Advanced steal controls, allowing the ball not to be stolen so easily (I had this working until I switched from basic material to a ball object!) I just like the roundness of the ball object too much that I don't want to switch it back to material?
Advanced sackbots that are able to play competitively in single player mode.
A better looking arena.

I listened to what some of you had to say and when the network went down I took that opportunity to update this level. I completely updated almost every single part of the game visually and mechanically, but I know there?s more I can do to improve it and that?s where I need your feedback!

I liked the locker room start and the ball drop to start the game. The court and the hoops are nice and and realistic. The best feature is the dunking, though. Very fun to fly through the air and have the hoop light on fire, NBA Jam style! I liked the fact it is two-ways, unlike the one in the story mode. I didn't have anyone playing with me, but I imagine that's fun. Here are my suggestions:

-- Can you make the anti-gravity active only in the court area so that you can't jump to the ceiling of the locker room?
-- Make it so the hoop bases aren't grabbable.
-- Make sure the ball stays in the court and playable. I had it go to the left, almost to the locker room, and I had it go over the backboard many times where it would come to rest on the base of the hoop and be a pain to retrieve. I actually had it get stuck up on top of the hoop once and had to restart.
-- One time the ball didn't drop until I ran back off the court and back.
-- Add a 3 pt line where baskets are worth more?
-- While the court and hoops (and Jumbotron) are nice, the background is too plain. Bleachers? Fans? Something?
-- The shots seem a little flat. It's difficult to make a shot from the nearest bounce pad. It's actually easier to make longer shots. More arc would be nice.

Good start. I think with a few tweaks (at least keeping the ball in play) it could be a lot of fun.

+ The art looked very realistic.
- You didn't add enough to the basic game play from the story level. It is too generic for my tastes.
- The ball got stuck in the hoop.

Thanks for feedback. I'll queue your level and check it out.

I have also had the ball get stuck for me to, but it's always happened when playing with someone and they could just toss me up to retrieve it. I'll look into that. It's most likely due to me not wanting to put my rim right on the backboard without the spacer. I guess I could make that spacer piece slippery or something like that. Thanks.

If you play with someone else you can actually get to the scoreboard and drop bombs on people. I was thinking of adding a couple of defensive sackbots as well to wreck a little more havoc.

EDIT: I forgot to mention that I have incorporated Roo's ideas too make the anti-gravity active only on the court area so that you can't jump to the ceiling of the locker room, made the hoop bases so they aren't grabbable, made sure the ball stays in the court and playable.

oh here this thread is, good.

I played this and I loved it, its the new level I plan to bring people to to play bball, its much better than the picked version. The realistic netting that you can grab.. haha awesome. The only thing I would suggest to make this a perfect level, is a music toggle.. please!!! lol great work man

Ok I played the level today and it was an pretty cool basketball level! The start of the level is really surprising, I like the locker room very detail and well design. The basketball game was awesome I love the effect that you put on very time you get a point in, this is what made your level better than the others.

My suggestion is to create a background in the basketball court by using the 3D glitch if you want.

Great BBall level! I'll have to bring this one up next time I have a few friends over. Only played one player, but I bet this would be utter chaos with 4! The dunking was a great addition. Always annoyed me in other BBall levels where you miss from right in front of the hoop. The flames when you score are great too. Only addition I'd like to see would be different scores based on how far you shoot from. I don't think I've ever seen it done. Probably would be some tricky logic, but I'm sure it would be doable.2011-02-27 07:12:00

I'll toss you my idea. I thought about doing nba jam style bball before I saw it was in the game and repeated over and over by community. How about having mascots in different animal costumes dancing being each basket.you could even change scoreboard to reflect the 2 teams, like pandas vs sharks.2011-02-27 08:00:00

When i first played through LBP2 story mode the mini game that I found myself addicted to was the basketball on the Factory of a better tomorrow world. I thought at the time it was excellent multiplayer fun but this user created level slamdunks that level into the bin. So many improvements over the original! The multilayer switching adding a new strategic element, the visual presentation right from the locker room through to courtside is excellent, special effects adding to the mounting excitement. I tried it in single player and two player mode and will definitely return to give it a four player work out. I didn't get anywhere the 250 point score target but assume there are more effects displayed the higher you score? Would love to see some little easter eggs as the timer tick downs if the thermo permits. I would really like to see four or five decent courts like this and take part in a tournament, could be great fun. Hearted!2011-06-16 18:35:00

Great basket ball game you have made here i like the realalistic look and sound you have used. I dont really like basket ball but your images stood out and i thought i would give it a go.

On my first dunk the ball got stuck in the net and i was glad to see an option that pulled two hamers out and smashed the ball back. great little addition.

I would like to see some sackbots standing in the stands watching the game, and it would be great if they were programed to lift their arms in the air and cheer when ever you scored that would be a great little addition.
Aso more advertisments around the walls would be good.

I liked the music changing option as i thought when i entered the level that s just what i would expect from a sports game.

Great level. Sorry i couldn't give you any better feedback but there wasn't really much i could see wrong with it.

Thanks for the feedback. My original intention was to put sackbots in the background, but they seem to be quite difficult to work with in extra layers...especially the back layers. I did manage to have some limited success when adding them to the front, like some of the fans as you walk to the court and the referee.

I completely agree on the bland arena. I'm definitely nowhere satisfied with anything in there except the court and backboards. I'll have to revisit this again and see what else I can do. Specific suggestions are welcomed.

:star: Note: This level has a lot more to offer when playing with 2 or more players. With a little assistance from your friend(s), you can reach the top of the scoreboard and unlock a lot more play options (big bounce, more explosions, fire galore, a bonus ball and electric fun.) FWIW: I did just see someone make it to the top the other day without help which I myself didn't think was possible. To date, I've been hesitant to make it too easy to reach this spot. Should I cave in and make it easy? I think I'll just add a quick one-time flash when you enter the arena that clearly shows there is more to the level than meets the blind eye...

Well because I have no friends(jk) I played by myself So I used the best of my imagination to think what it would be like with 2+ people. It looked good. I see it has went through many updates which is always fine and I also see your planning on more. I have mainly no literal suggestions to give you because your either planning to iron them out or already have. So may I suggest you get a bit more risky. Perhaps you could create a stage selection, or power ups that are activated after scoring several points in a row.The backboard is the limit XD All cheesiness aside it looked like a great level and I plan on playing with other people very soon.2011-06-18 19:08:00

The coolest basketball level I've seen on LBP. Lots of neat visual touches and good use of the extra layers.

The only thing I could suggest would be to make the time a little less. I'm not saying 5 min is too long, but I suspect that people will be more likely to have a re-match if the level was a bit shorter.

Overall, a fun, well designed versus level with some very cool features.
