Wickwood Tales

Archive: 14 posts

Hey guys, I have another Project in the works, something very unconventional(but hopefully fun), Not much to say right now other than it involved spells, spirits, uhh..woods.. ect.
ATM Im more curious on getting critique on the style and feel of the game. So here is a screenshot.
Tell me: Does it look good?
does it have a sence of adventure, like you want to explore more of it
is it toooo over the top?
to...cluttered ect...

Music any good? or scrap it?

Wow... That looks fantastic! The only thing I suggest you improve on is the actual look of the platforming areas. The forest, trees, vines and magic in the air is deffineatly present, but the only thing that doesnt work for me is the little bits of pixelated platform.Try disguising the plafroms with a log, on the back of a worm, or maybe even a giant fly! Dont be afraid to try something out of your building zone... I would deffineatly play this if you incorperated some giant creatures in here somewhere!
Good luck!

This looks like a project I'll be keeping an eye on. :]

My only suggestion is one you seem to have hinted at in your original post, I guess you're assuming it may be as well: It's a bit cluttered. Try cutting down on decoration sticker use, but it looks really cool (even with the clutter)!

I can't wait to see more of this project as it has piqued my interest. :]

idk. cluttered, maybe. the large amount of decorations gives it a very lush forest look. it may be hell on the thermo though2011-02-24 10:22:00

Man, I am pumped about this project! It looks very well done. I will echo what others have said, though - it does look a bit cluttered. Remember that you want it to be visually interesting but not to the point of distracting the player from what he should be focusing on. You see, the player will see it differently than you do. You've probably spent countless hours in with the level in create mode, so you've had plenty of time to just stare at it and nit pick over every single detail. Whereas a player might run through the area in a matter of seconds, and only get an impression of the background rather than taking in every single rock and leaf. So that's what you should aim for - giving the player the impression that they're in a lush forest rather than actually constructing a lush forest. You'd be surprised what happens when you change something as simple as fog color, or add in one or two ambient sound effects. It goes a long way toward convincing the player of his surroundings. Plus, it'll free up quite a bit of your thermo.2011-02-24 14:37:00

Cool, Thanks guys,

as for the platforming post, This isnt a platformer at all....you see that green curled up thing? well that's what you control and it flies(the blue one is a computer controlled one) , altho there is going to be parts where you help other things "platform" with spells but not particularity this area.

Anyway more info on this title

This (in theory) is a open world type game where exploring is beneficial.

Only problem is since this will need several LEVEL LINKS (this small part though un-optimised takes up 25% of thermo)
and the fact that there is collecting and rpg "stat" elements i'm really ganna have to think hard on how I am going to save progress between level links. (I was thinking about somehow using stickers and a sticker "database" at the begining of each area/level link that represents stats....but at the same time...that takes away from the experience...maybe if i asked in help someone has come up with a better IDEA.

I'm at work right now and all last night I spent time working on music (ya probably should be the last thing I work on but hey,)
I'm no composer so i was going to post a video of what i got so far to find out of this music capture's the mood well so pls check back later tonight.

Great insite!
though as i create other areas of the game I'm sure I'll tone it done alittle but I figure since there will be alot of "exploring"
people will be visiting the same area more than one or for a longer time period, so they'll catch more of my hours of work

That looks quite amazing. :] I can't wait to see what the full level will end up looking like. xD The music fits the theme very well, and custom music that isn't terrible is always a plus in my eyes. :]2011-02-25 04:36:00

Looks like it'll be one of those "unusual" indie games like NightSky. I might give this a try later on once it's finished.2011-02-25 09:24:00
