[Tutorial] Making Sound FX with Logic and Sound Objects

Archive: 11 posts

Hi everyone. It's been a really long time since I posted anything to LBPC, so apologies for the extended absence. And also, while I'm thinking of it, thanks to everyone who has posted up some fantastic tutorials here, which have been incredibly helpful.

Right. I wasn't sure if this was ready or cool enough to be posted in the Tutorials forum, so depending on your feedback, maybe this thread can be moved over there or linked in an existing topic.

This is a tutorial level designed to teach you one thing... wait, no, sorry that's the training sim from the Matrix. It's easy to get confused. This level demonstrates how to use logic and sound objects to create sound FX; examples include using selectors to cycle through sounds and global audio tweakers, as well as using direction combiners and timers and counters to play multiple sound objects sequentially or together. You can make some pretty cool and unique sounds for your levels, and stick those microchips on game or music sequencers, or you can run them as standalone effects.

I don't try to cover everything you can do (for instance, I've left out what you can do with controlinators), but hopefully the tutorial is pretty easy to grasp. And you can take away the examples as optional prizes. My level design is basic, because I'm not particularly artistic... wish I could make things look stunning like many of you can do, but I can't. So...

Let me know what you think, and as this is F4F, I'll gladly have a go at your level if you'd like. Just let me know, either here or via PSN.

Thanks!
HardSync

Wow, I can't believe that no one's replied to this... I played this yesterday, and Hardsync's got some pretty ingenious ways of using the sound effects with logic. I urge you guys to check this out, because sound is probably one of THE most overlooked things in levels, and you can most definitely learn a thing or two about atmospheric sound creation from this tutorial! 2011-02-27 14:19:00

Right. I've updated the level's design a bit, made it more interesting and arguably more attractive. Overall, the level is getting good ratings, but not a lot of plays since I haven't really advertised it anywhere.

Neverthless, this topic isn't getting much attention. So, my questions are whether this thread can be moved over to the Tutorials section (and should it be there?) or should I create a new thread instead?

This is a great level with a consistent and compelling visual theme and a lot of good examples of logic drive SFX. I was very impressed with the creativity on display with many of these examples. You've a far better audio capability than I'll ever have it shows well in this level.

Presentation is an important aspect of delivering tutorial levels and yours was interesting and clean from start to finish. The logic on display was easy to see and trace from point to point and the tutorial mode helps deliver on the details.

As I mentioned online I did get confused while playing through. I wanted to see the tutorial so I left that mode on but I really didn't understand what this meant in terms of the level. (There is just a description saying that I can turn on or off the tutorial. That and the recommendation to turn it off the first time around.)

As I moved through each example I was getting frustrated as to why the camera was not unlocking from its view and following me. For half of the examples I would have to run to the unseen right far enough to activate the next button to get the camera to follow. Once I was about 70% through the level did I realize that the tutorial aspect took the form of movie cameras with subtitles and that the X button progressed to the next shot.

I think it would help out those of us who are a bit slow to put a short description of how to navigate the tutorial bits or add a controlinator subtitle so the X graphic would pop up, something like "X to continue" or something.

This is a small thing when taken in context to the rest of the level but I can see some impatient person down-rating the level if this wasn't more apparent.

Great work on this level, it does a good job showing the player what could be done with audio samples and a bit of switching components. I know I never thought to use the components in that fashion.

If you are able would you be able to try out my tutorial level and post your thoughts on it? Link is in my signature. Cheers.

Thanks for your comments, Trindall. I've queued your level, and will play it tonight. (Actually, I queued it this morning on LBP.me, after I saw your comment there, but had to leave for work...)

As for the progressing the tutorial sequences, I've been wondering if anyone has had difficulty like you had... and I've been thinking about including a quick note on how it all works for about a week now -- was kind of waiting to see if anyone left a comment like yours. I'm not using a controlinator, so I'll need to add something in at the start or perhaps on the very first example. Basically, just press the circle button to progress to the next scene of each tutorial sequence. Originally, I had walls in the level preventing people from proceeding until the sequence finished, but initial feedback from friends convinced me to trash that concept and come up with the current method. Sorry you got confused.

Thanks again for your feedback.

I ran into the same problem as Trindall but I must say that it was overall a great tutorial. Was explained thoroughly enough to understand and the presentation was done very well with out taking the focus away from the tutorial. The scoreboard was a neat addition with another example of what can be done with the sounds. The voice over was probably the best I have ever heard and felt true to the theme you made. Great work and really opens up the doors with what can be done if someone has the patience to create there very own unique effects.

HardSync produces some of THE best music on LBP, if his sound effects are anywhere near as good I'm gonna be blown away

Queued, feedback later

Apology time, can;t believe I omitted to feedback on this level.

Trindall makes some excellent points, I also found a bit of confusion in navigating, but the examples given would raise anyone's understanding of how to produce some awesome sound effects.

I'd mark it as intermediate, I think a fair understanding of logic is needed to get the best out of this,

however, having been fortunate enough to see what you are capable of in producing music, I think you should do a tutorial on 'how to make music for movies', it'd probably have a limited number of plays again, but if anyone can (should) do it, it's you!
