Balance Scale

Archive: 4 posts

this is probably a simple thing to make, but i seem to be having creators block, for my new level in progress i want to create a puzzle for a rooms that uses a scale, if you put the right amount of pieces on each side (each peice will weight a different amount if thats possible) if you get the puzzle right the door to the next room opens, but it you get it wrong something else happens. if you have any good ideas for this i will be very greateful and will include a thanks in the level description or somewhere in game or something.2008-11-21 15:37:00

On way to achieve this is to attach each block with a magnetic key of a different color, and put in magnetic triggers of all colors to each of the scales. This way you can have a total of I think 8 or 10 blocks. It's also possible to have separate blocks in either section (you have to have them separate, because two green magnetic keys don't count as two blocks on the scale). This way you can have two sets of each color, for a total of 16 (or is it 20? I don't remember the number of key colors) blocks to drop on the scales total.

EDIT:

Another way is to use actual physics and the spring tools. Set the spring strength so that when you have the correct amount of blocks on a scale, the scale is in a position to trigger a magnetic key/switch trigger.

I'll give both a shot and see what works best, although I dont have much experience with the springs so i dont really know how they work, but i'll try and figure it out.2008-11-21 16:16:00

If I remember right, adjusting a spring's "strength" setting will adjust how much it does down by weight. A higher strength number, the less it moves with equal weight or the more weight it takes to make it move.

I hope this makes sense. Just increase the strength until you have the right amount of weight for it to move, attach a magnetic key to the "scales part" that you put stuff on, and the corresponding magnetic switch with a short proximity setting at the base of where the spring goes down. You would need to fiddle with the numbers to get it all to work, but hopefully the idea makes sense. I don't have the game loaded up right now but if you need concrete examples, let me know.
