Candy Land

Archive: 35 posts

:star: This is my first LBP2 level that ive published. I got the inspiration for the level from the boardgame Candy Land. While my level isnt a boardgame, I tried to include each area of Candy Land, in my level. I would appreciate any feedback. I have just started using this site, so I will do my best to leave worthy feedback in return for any feedback i recieve. Thanks for checking this out. <3

a cute level
played it till the goal :3
i have some tips for you if you like:
- never build your levels on ground of the background level that destroyes the feeling on being for real in the candy land ( i don't know it, but thats what i can say )
- you can move the controllinator inside the ship so the one sitting in it is looking forward not to the side
- if you destroy monster you can connect destroyer to the eye parts as well... just image the poor childrens playing your level and than naked eyes on the ground! x) hah
- never use round stuff for platforms to jump on when they move back in the wall for a limited time. it makes it just unecessary difficult.

hope i was able to help you a bit
greetings

Thanks for the advise, i really do wish i hadnt built the entire level on the ground >.< i didnt do that with the part two after the level link. Thats a great idea to turn the controlinator, andi will do that for sure. And i will fix Gloppys eyes. I did that intentionally for effect lol, but it prolly would look better to have it all disapear. I also intentionally made them round for the difficulty, because there inst much difficulty in the level. If i get many more complaints i will change it though, and if anyone else reads this before viewing, please include how many trys it took to get across it. If its to high i will fix it. thanks again for your review ForcesWerWolf 2011-02-22 15:22:00

Quite bizarre, I'm not sure if I'm entertained or horrified. Seriously though, the themes are very well put together. The only area that could use improvement is the gumdrop kingdom. The section with the plasma could retract slower since the gum drops are a bit more difficult to jump from (rounded objects). Additionally, one gumdrop (the pink one - one from the right), failed to come out after dying in that spot. Beyond that everything was fine with the exception of enemies. Excluding the final boss, there didn't seem to be any indication that enemies were taking damage, leading me to believe I was missing the weak spot. Overall, great work. This level really brought me back to the original Candy Land.2011-02-22 17:03:00

I liked the general idea, but I got stuck in the liquorice house. The lift went too high up and so I couldn't continue! A frustrating problem in an otherwise great looking level!!

Ok i have fixed the area with the gum drops that move in and out of the wall, on gum drop mountain. There is now an alternate way to get across if you cant do it by hopping across the gum drops. If you DO hop across and make it successfully, there is a reward. the info is in the level also. I also shaved a bit off the tops of the moving gumdrops to make them a little bit flater.
As for the enemies i added sounds that they make when they are being hit. So that you know that you hit it.

Thanks so much Shantdogg for your feedback, i put it to good use.

Played your level, and I really enjoyed it! You did really well with the visuals, and I like how you made each section have it's own theme and unique gameplay. It really felt like you were traveling far because of the length of the level, which I also really liked. One thing I would suggest would be to make more use of the flat layers, especially the far back one. While most of the actual level has plenty of detail, adding a flat background every so often would add detail to the blue sky, which is empty. Perhaps you could also make your objective clearer in the lolly pop forest, and alter some of the awkward layer changing in the swamp. But all-in-all, it was quite a good level. Kudos to you, you apparently spent a lot of time on it!2011-02-22 22:25:00

Very very nice scenery. The gameplay was great aswell! Every section had their own little theme and unique gameplay and that made me happy. I only had one thing that really bothered me. The bottom of the level was visible. I'm not sure if you did this on purpose, but it had me staring at it instead of the beautiful scenery.

Ive went and tried to add some clouds to the sky in the backlayer as suggested. Thanks Jdsfrog for the idea and the feedback. I also changed a couple things in Lollipop Forest to ease the progression. Again thanks to all for the feedback so far this is great. 2011-02-23 03:29:00

Played it, smily faced it! I like all the detail, especially the hidden point bubbles and the decorated life things. One thing I noticed was that you can see a material tweaker switch and an emitter behind the jelly bean monster. I think I preferred the second part in terms of its detail, etc, and I loved the little boat! I would say to cut back a little on the prize bubbles, it feels like you are giving prizes for the sake of it.

Otherwise, lovely level

Ok i went in and fixed the destroyer and emitter that was showing. Thanks spitfire for noticing those and thanks a bunch for the feedback. Also for those playing in the future. If you like the boat..shoot for a highscore, at the end if u earned enough points u can win the little boat. 2011-02-23 14:50:00

OKAY OKAY I PLAYED IT!
My advise is to pick it off the floor. Make the floor bigger so that we believe the whole area is made out of that theme.
The level is amazingly good, king licorice if you could make him run around like he really hates the water. That would be funny and make it a bit harder and more real.
Also the background, youve done an amazing job with the level design but the back ground is a bit plain, unfourtunatly i'm not a genius when it comes to visuals so i don't know exactly what advice but it just needs something to keep selling the whole theme of candy land, the meanies take like 3 chocolate balls? chocolate balls are a bit annoying to get and the meanies often kill you before you get to them, i'd say 2 would be perfect. But overall

9/10 its awesome and with a bit of a touch up it will be perfect!!!!!

I enjoyed ur level a alot, very cheerful experience mite I sey..

I liked the variety of different candy theme visuals in each section throughout the level, i also thought that ur choice of music was well chosen for each area (Lollipop forest + Sleepyhead music was awesome). I liked how u had different ways to get points eg: candy, secrets etc.. that kept things fresh instead of just "running thru" point bubbles all the time. Sound effects were nicely used as well, especially the sloshy sounds when u jump on something well.... sloshy i guess =), although in Licorice castle the eating sounds were still activating after the food on the table was gone. I reali liked the little Bats in Chocolate swamp, I thought it was clever and they looked great. I agree with other posts about the ground being visible.. i didn't ruin it however imo, it just had that slight little "awwww bummer" feel to it.

Overall I thought u captured the feel and mood of the level brilliantly, it truly did feel like a journey and once u start fitting in backgrounds and subtle detail to ur levels then u are really gona shine thru. Very nice work

I agree about the first level in the set. But It would be alot of work to get it all up off the
ground. I was thinking it would look good with the background scenery from victorias levels.
You know the chocolate and candy stuff. It might blend better than that burlap. It does
catch the eye immediately. I dunno if you've looked at the level with that background yet.
try it out if not. It would be a quick and easy upgrade.

Thanks for all the feedback, -will fix the sound effects on the food in the Licorice Castle. -Im going to also make Lord Licorice flee around. Thanks for the idea. -I would absolutely LOVE to raise the level to make the ground not visible. I didnt even realize till about the end of the part one, how badly a mistake it was lol. I cannot imagine what all it would take to raise this level. I may try one day and really see actually how hard it is. I am going to see if a theme background would suffice, but i dont think it will due to wanting a sky as the background. well see though.
-Im not sure if its obvious that ALL the chocolate balls in that area of chocolate swamp are grabbable and will work with dispensing the meanines. So ill try to add something to make it more apparent.

Thanks again for all the feedback.

Hi there! Sorry for the delay on feedback for feedback (beachstorm level) , i've been busy

I really liked the level, although it was not very innovating (maybe I expect too much from lbp2 levels).

The best part of the level are the great diverse settings and visuals. I love how you decorated the place and the gameplay is also amusing and nice. I know how much work it is to make a detailed level so congratulations on a job wel done on the art department

There really are not much flaws in here, indeed as someone mentioned some layer changing issues but nothing too seriously.

Great design first of all, The Chocolate swamp looked awesome, loved how you did the background that took me back to the Donkey Kong Country era,
The gum drop was cool, pretty challenging to get the jump right but just cause its not easy doesnt mean its a bad thing .

Also the first level, try to use a different floor, alot of people complain about it for some reason.
one important thing you should keep in mind, when putting grabbable stuff like switches on top of a grabbable floor, make sure you make the grabbable floor Non-grabbale, in other words so he directly grabs (the lollipop for example) instead of grabbing the floor.

The House was cool, it made wana do something like it XD I love how you use the floors, that had classic written all over it like in the old movies.
I like where you get your inspiration and great ideas, great design, just work a bit more on making platforming unique etc and experiment with some logic like the material tweakers for example.

Great job

Edit* Amazing use of colors btw ^^

Blooboy thats an awesome idea about the material tweaker on the floor. i didnt even think of that O.o lol thanks i will change that asap.
I have wanted to put a background to appease everyone...but it ruins the back drop "sky"...

DDTheGamer, about the heart thing, i just recently got the online part of the LBP game, and i didnt even really realize that that would put ppl off, bc i had seen so many of the levels in community with things like that. i thought it was alright but i will remove it so it doesnt put anyone else off.

Thanks everyone for all of the feedback.

Hi Purpleiris

K, it's getting a little late and my computer is VERY slow, so its too much work to read all the reviews youv'e had already so forgive me if I repeat what others have already said.
Gonna write as I play.......
GREAT begining, real cute, and well put together!.......apart from as some have already mentioned, the 'seeing the floor...simple solution here, why not use the 3d layer tool, and drag a long thin bit that is in the foreground along the whole of the bottom of the level? It will cut into your excisting decore, but not delete too much of it
K, got stuck on inside one of the three pronged candy plants near the guy needing the axe, had to pop.(ahhh, just found out you can grab the tops, NICE.
NICE sliding front to the castle, I remember using that idea in one of my psp levels alooong time ago.
mmmmm? Flicked all four switches to the green (down) and gate still not opening? K, heres where i went wrong.....the lift doesnt automatically go back down to the bottom, so I stoped the lift half way between the second and third floor, and couldnt get back in to discover the third floor til I popped and spawned back inside the lift...old school lbp1 trick....put elastic on the lift lever to make it return back to floor when you let go
LOL at the dialogue!
gRRRR at the curved objects to jump on everywhere...VERY hard.
Nice controlinator section.

Part 2

YAY, lack of floor showing is A LOT better'
K, getting a bit fed up with all this hard jumping every where, this is now dragging a little.
ahhhhhhhh at the glass feckin lollipops!!!!!!
k, I give up...sorry.

I spent 40 mins in total, and just got so hot and bothered towards the end....too long for me

Real nice level, great ideas in there, and if it had ended at part one, with a bit of a story line to finsh i'd have felt like I had achieved something, but too much of one thing to play the second level as well......basically Im really not a fan of platformers, most would dissagree probably, but each to their own huh?

Keep up the good work, but do listen when people say bits are hard, you might not find them so, but you ALWAYS find your own levels easier (I always make the same mistake)

BTW, thanks for the f4f on my level 'house of the flying diggers BOSS FIGHT', I spent the best part of today changing things, and making the easy mode, alot easier...i hope you can replay it and let me know what you think?

I must say this level was a big surprise
I looved so much play it.. so colorfull.. agradable plataforms.. nice storie (ok ok can be from cardboard but still fit 100% on lbp style)
There are some fixes to make anyways
- 1 camera at hunting house is visible
- I can cross that plasma thing on gums i can grab and dont worry if i hit the floor - you can always tweak that object to be not grabable.
- That gum boss was a bit hard for such beautifull level put some energie bar so we know when he almost dead.

If i find more i will say: Overall its a MUST PLAY level Great job

I know u played 1 of my levels RIP but can u f4f my Pirates ^^
