Why is everyone calling beta BETA?
Archive: 33 posts
I'm really getting annoyed by this. Everyone is talking like "I wish I was in BETA!" "I was in BETA." "You were in BETA?" "Yeah, I was in BETA." "Are you sure you were in BETA?" "Yeah, I'm sure I was in BETA." "That's cool you were in BETA." "It is cool I was in BETA." What? Does it stand for something? Babbling Extra Tasty Avalon? Is there a reason behind this? | 2011-02-22 01:22:00 Author: Retro Posts: 104 |
I guess it comes from people generally capitalizing the word to emphasize the fact the it wasn't finished. | 2011-02-22 01:48:00 Author: ThisDudeRufus Posts: 170 |
Does it even matter? people will call anything as they see fit. it's not impotent at all really. *mew | 2011-02-22 02:02:00 Author: Lord-Dreamerz Posts: 4261 |
Yes. it in fact does Stand for Babbling Extra Tasty Avalon. either that or whenever it is talked about in real life everyone just shouts the beta part and so they felt it was appropriate to capitalize it when typing it, or it could be for no reason at all, take your pick | 2011-02-22 02:10:00 Author: Unknown User |
Actually, if you noticed, in the XMB menu it's titled "LittleBIGPlanet 2 BETA", and in all of Mm's official announcements involving it, it's called "BETA". "beta" is the second letter of the Greek alphabet, while "BETA" derives from that and is instead the second stage of a process. I may have my facts wrong, though. | 2011-02-22 02:14:00 Author: TheZimInvader Posts: 3149 |

Everyone is calling beta BETA because thats how you spell it if you are talking about a pre-alpha stage of a game Otherwise like Zim said beta is the second letter of the Greek alphabet | 2011-02-22 02:23:00 Author: chinook3 Posts: 453 |
Me like a lot of people just say beta because we are lazy and don't like to use caps much. but BETA is right. *mew | 2011-02-22 02:27:00 Author: Lord-Dreamerz Posts: 4261 |

*Throws Pokeball* Oh god, sorry, I thought you were...never mind... *Walks away* off topic but. Sorry i love your joke, because all this time i have been trying to sound like and gotten a habit of sounding like the pokemon "Mew" and not a cat like most people guess | 2011-02-22 02:35:00 Author: Lord-Dreamerz Posts: 4261 |
Beta is one of development stages naming that most developersl like to use and it name comes from greek alphabet. This is how it looks like : InDev/PreAlpha -> Alpha -> Beta -> RC -> Release: More info about it, ofcorse this onlyt theory and it depends on company: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Software_release_life_cycle Gamer usally understand that as game being released for public in testing purposes, but as you can see above it's does not need to | 2011-02-22 03:43:00 Author: Shadowriver Posts: 3991 |

Oh, I see now... It's still gonna annoy me though | 2011-02-22 07:35:00 Author: Retro Posts: 104 |
For starters, statisically, most people don't call it "BETA", so perhaps change the thread title to "Why do a few people call beta BETA?" Actually, if you noticed, in the XMB menu it's titled "LittleBIGPlanet 2 BETA"... That's probably the only reason - there's no semantic difference if you capitalize it. Most software products use lower case "beta", but perhaps it's a Sony-standard typographical convention (to indicate that it's a beta of a game, rather than a game that just happens to contain the word "beta"), and a few people just mimicked the typography. | 2011-02-22 17:25:00 Author: Aya042 Posts: 2870 |

I'd have to agree with aya - the BETA in caps is only to stress to people it's not a final version - much like the way lots of people use DEMO in caps, even though it works fine without the caps. | 2011-02-22 18:25:00 Author: standby250 Posts: 1113 |
It's probably just like why people write LittleBigPlanet the way they do. It could be Little Big Planet, but it wasn't written that way. I bet if it was LittleBigPlanet 2 BeTa, people would spell it that way. | 2011-02-23 06:29:00 Author: Shiro Posts: 108 |

I writte BETA because that's how I've seen it spelled "Officially" pretty much anywhere, and I'm farly used to typing while holding the Caps lovk button and other extra stuff, so I don't really mind, I don't care if others call it Beta tbh tho, altho I don't really like it if nothing is capitalized (beta) as I've been thaught multiple times that BETA is a word that at least must have the 1st letter capitalized. Tho its not really a problem. I also like it better when its written as BETA or Beta, looks better, and more formal, more "legit" you know what I mean? In short, pretty much I do it because I've been thaught that's the "official" way, and I like writting it like that. | 2011-02-23 07:13:00 Author: Silverleon Posts: 6707 |
Why say BETA when you can say BETA ? What annoys me more is people calling a BETA code a " BETA key". Why do people call them keys? | 2011-02-23 16:08:00 Author: D-E-S_87 Posts: 148 |
Why say BETA when you can say BETA ? What annoys me more is people calling a BETA code a " BETA key". Why do people call them keys? Because of the term "Closed Beta" the code or "key" is used to unlock the Beta. It all essentially derives from the opening of a locked door. | 2011-02-23 16:15:00 Author: robotiod Posts: 2662 |
Because of the term "Closed Beta" the code or "key" is used to unlock the Beta. It all essentially derives from the opening of a locked door. But "closed" doesn't imply locked.... | 2011-02-23 16:41:00 Author: rtm223 Posts: 6497 |
But "closed" doesn't imply locked.... It kind of does in this case. If a door is closed in real life, you open it to get in. If the door is closed and restricted to only authorized personnel (as a closed beta is), you use a key or key-card to open it. | 2011-02-23 16:56:00 Author: Wayward Posts: 120 |
But "closed" doesn't imply locked.... Beta door handle doesn't have the same ring though | 2011-02-23 16:58:00 Author: robotiod Posts: 2662 |
The door is still closed after you use the key. So if the BETA is the door and is"closed", and you use a key, it's still closed. | 2011-02-23 20:38:00 Author: Devious_Oatmeal Posts: 1799 |
You people are confusing me with all this talk of opening and closing locked beta door keypads. What's even more annoying to me, is people that say I was in Beta... rather than I was in "the" Beta... lazy sods. I mean, you wouldn't say "I was in car this morning.", would you? | 2011-02-23 21:11:00 Author: Rustbukkit Posts: 1737 |
The door is still closed after you use the key. So if the BETA is the door and is"closed", and you use a key, it's still closed. Ahh but the downloading and starting the client would be what opens the door. so the "Key" gives you the tools needed to open the "door" the rest is up to you. | 2011-02-23 21:31:00 Author: robotiod Posts: 2662 |

Yeah, some kid called me A beta the other day when I was wearing that vest. We were supposed to be testing the game, but I guess all we did was get wasted and put on academic probation. | 2011-02-23 21:58:00 Author: Unknown User |
Ahh but the downloading and starting the client would be what opens the door. so the "Key" gives you the tools needed to open the "door" the rest is up to you. Well, if we're talking about that. Downloading is walking up to the door, and starting the client would be twisting the door knob. OH NO, BUT WHAT'S THIS?!?! It seems a thief has broken in and is stealing all your work from your cabinet. OH GOD, you need to call the police, but the thief notices your reactions, and tries to hightail it. Good thing you just bought that new security system that vaporizes intruders. OH NO, the programmers were stupid and now the security system is vaporizing your home. Looks like someone's gonna need to call the doctor. And that is why I'll never buy Norton again. | 2011-02-23 22:37:00 Author: Devious_Oatmeal Posts: 1799 |
Yeah, some kid called me A beta the other day when I was wearing that vest. Wow! Funny, but a wee bit sad too. It's amazing to me... this internet thing. Here we have millions of people with daily access to it and all it's wealth of knowledge and power, yet everyday I see more signs that it seems to be turning people into illiterate numbskulls. It's sad really. I mean, I'll use lolz, or lmao as shortcuts... but I can still remember how to spell those words out and when it's appropriate to use them. I've been known to use internetz lingo online with certain friends... but it's more for humor than anything else. I'm worried that half the youth using it don't actually know that they aren't speaking a real language... English. Sorry, didn't mean to take things off topic folks. As you were. | 2011-02-23 22:48:00 Author: Rustbukkit Posts: 1737 |
lol. I agree. Just the other day one of my little brother's friends Googled something, but get this. It was entirely in text lingo. He didn't know why he couldn't find what he was looking for and I told him "Check your spelling". You would think it stopped there but no. He said, "It's fine". A few seconds later it clicked in his head and he said "Oh... Maybe it's the spaces." XD I told him the words were wrong and he finally got it. My god man, is this how unedumacated kids are getting. Well, I blame the skools. Saying, "You're a BETA" is calling someone a piece of programming I can see how "You're in BETA" could be acceptable. It is assumed that you know what they are talking about. Now if you're walking down the street and someone says that. You should shoot them. -_- | 2011-02-23 23:21:00 Author: Devious_Oatmeal Posts: 1799 |
