Amateur creator seeks love, high fives

Archive: 9 posts

Hello all. I was stumbling my way around the google-verse looking for tutorials on how to get some stuff done in a couple levels i want to create and I found myself getting led back here over and over. So I sank my teeth in and read about 4000 tutorials and other random threads.

This community seems pretty fantastic and I hope to slowly become a part of it. I don't think i am a particularly talented level creator, but I sure do enjoy it. I started making my own maps in Duke Nukem on the PC, and have since done stuff with Unreal Tournament, Far Cry, Quake, etc... to recently on the PS3 with LBP1 (and now 2) and Modnation. I love to create stuff, even if my "art" is a bit sloppy.

I have done a fair amount of figuring out the logic on my own, it's extremely gratifying. When i finally got a spaceship flying around, shooting lasers, killing other space ships following paths I laid out for them (very basic, but still).... i was so satisfied.

I want to branch out into other genres though. I am a bit of a tower defense junky so right now Im trying to figure out how to make that work. I have a few questions on that which I'll pose in the help forum.

But beyond begging for help i'm hoping to get to know some other creators, check out there stuff and maybe make some new friends. Im an old fart (33!!!), i live in NYC, i'm married - no kids. Im a social worker. Um... I have a podcast. Anyway, enough about me. Im excited to get to know folks around these parts.

Welcome! Glad ya made it!!

No worries! There are folks of all ages in here! ..and to me your not that old. Cool to see another fan of Duke Nuke'em, Quake etc.. Never did play with the editor, but did used to play a ton of custom maps in HL2. Mostly the team ones were my favorites.

Oh.. there is an awesome tower defense level out there you should try! http://lbp.me/v/w-26h5

Have fun!

Thanks for the welcome (and high five).

I've been abusing the help forum already, and people there have been extremely helpful. I would consider myself a very amateur creator when it comes to LBP. I only made 4 or 5 levels in the first game. I just couldn't wrap my head around making anything worthwhile in the world of platforming games. Shooter levels and race tracks -- I feel like I understand what makes those fun to play. But platforming, I either made things too hard or too easy, and the puzzles were really dumb or no one knew what the hell i was getting at.

But with LBP2 allowing me to move into other genres, im really, really, really into it. I mean, i already loved LBP. I beat the first and played several hundred community levels, and beat this one and love playing it... but now the level editor really excites me.

It also confuses me though. The logic is intense! When I figure something out (like when i made a working sidescrolling spaceship) it's really fufilling. But other times I feel like i want to do really easy stuff and I just can't figure out the logic for it. I also am still having trouble converting any visual ideas I have to either 2.5 D in 3 layers... or top down. But im going to stick with it, because even though I always loved making levels in those old shooters, it was just hallways and whatnot. Now I can make whole games! It's going to take a ton of learning, but it should be fun.

And I'll be doing it here. So thanks for the welcome, i hope ya'll dont get annoyed by my amateurish questions and i hope to be a good member of this community.

Aloha! Welcome, so you've finally joined?

Might I suggest taking a peak at the Recommendations (http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?56-Recommendations)Section?
As you're sure to find some levels that other players loved.
Aside from the few that are just promoting thier friends levels.

It doesn't get enough visits. enjoy!

Aloha~
