Ylod please noooo!

Archive: 9 posts

Just started up the PS3 (80GB) for the second time today to play LBP2 with the kids as usual.

Got to the Pod and it suddenly shut down. When I started it up again we go what I now realise is called the YLOD.

I've explained to the kids that they wont be able to play LBP for a couple of days while I get a new PS3 Slim from Amazon. Not happy bunnies.

I am just beginning to appreciate how bad this is and that we may have just lost all our saves and levels. Very not good.

So I'm after some advice and suggestions on what I can do.

I'm looking to get a new PS3 Slim 320 but have heard a suggestion that the 160 is more reliable as the 320 has issues with freezing. Seems a bit odd to me but as much as I would prefer the extra space I would rather have the more reliable box. Anyone able to confirm this is an issue?

The important thing for me is trying to find a way to recover my saves and levels and transfer to my new box. Does anyone know a way I can do this? Can I simply put my hard disk into the new console and back it up? I'm guessing they aren't compatible but what if I use a friends Original PS3 to backup? Would that work?

Any suggestions will be gratefully received.

Putting the hard drive in a different console would format it.2011-02-20 23:12:00

Due to the paranoid encryption system, realistically, the only way is to repair the broken PS3, so you'll either have to do this (http://www.yellowlight.co.uk/fix.php) (I had a go, and it's actually not as hard as it looks, although it is time-consuming and irritating), or pay someone else to do it.

Many independent computer shops will also take in game consoles now a days for these types of repairs. Alternatively, if you're looking to replace the system entirely later on anyway and do not wish to spend another hundred on repairing it, stick it in the freezer for about 45 minutes. Not a joke.
I did that with mine and it turned back on long enough to transfer data from the system to an external usb. So have all the needed equipment on hand by the time it comes out of the freezer. Now, I did that right after the system died, so I do not know if it would work in your situation, now awhile after it's already broke down, but I hope it does if you take that route.

Hey guys!
Just wanted to say thanks for the help and advice.
I decided to have a go at mending it myself and follow the Gilksy reflow guide and it WORKED!

Here's some photos I took during the process.

Just curious.

How long have you had the PS3?

And what were you doing when it happened?

Your lucky Gilksy's guide worked for you. It doesn't work for all the causes of YLoD =/ I tried it but didn't work.2011-03-02 19:49:00

I had to bite the bullet and just buy a new PS3 when this happened to me about 2 weeks ago seeing as it was a 40gb and I needed the extra HDD space and a guarantee that it won't break in the near future.

So bye bye save data, bye bye ?200 :'(
