Kenji's Vehicular Manslaughter

Archive: 24 posts

I'm not sure how to add pics here so I will in another post, this is basically a survival challenge where you drive around trying to kill as many of the red guys as you can before you die.

Let me know what levels to review

Here's your playthrough review!

Initial Thoughts

The top down view angle is good, on first impression. The vehicle looks like a sports car (I hope that's what its intended to be) and we appear to be in a forest. Great. The background could do with just a little bit more detail. You've selected good materials for the different aspects (trees, path, grass, etc) but some texturising would really help make the level that little bit more immersive. Why not try out some of the 'realistic' sticker? Dirt patches on the ground to vary the texture a little, some more 3D decorations (I see you've already used a few flowers, it's a start!)

One major niggle is that when I drove all the way to the left (exploring a little) I could see the blank level beyond. This is easily solved by placing a thin layer at the front to the side of your playmap, which is big enough to obscure anything else behind the map itself. Just to give it that finishing touch, you know?

Game Start!

Controls are easy to pick up but a little on the sensitive side. I like the speed, but the stopping time is far to fast for a car. Think braking distances etc - would a difference between your mover's acceleration and deceleration make this feel a little more substantial? I got into the city map and the enemies started to spawn. I had only two big problems with them - my weapons were unpredictable, not always firing when i wanted them to (Is this your intention? If so maybe place a 'power up' bar under the players health bar so they can see when their weapons are enabled?) And also the hit detection was a bit off. I stopped, faced off against one opponent, and found myself shooting at him about four times before he died.

(You need to make sure that all parts of the enemies destroy themselves. One part would explode, and the rest would drop down to the bottom of the map, which looks kind of odd in a top down view!)

Running over the red people was kind of gruesome, and yet strangely satisfying. . .

The addition of the little holo bonus points was a ncie touch - why not try more of this? Perhaps health powerups or weapon powerups? It would really add something to the level!

Round Up

It needs a little polishing, but this is a great start!

F4F

I'd appreciate any comments you have on my movie, The Printz Diaries (Prologue). F4F Thread (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=49981-The-Printz-Diaries-Prologue-(FILM))

UPDATE: I tightened the steering, i also fixed the enemy cars so that they explode completely, changed the transmission to manual (it functions properly now) and added deceleraton, brakes. Made the enemies different speeds so they dont get tangled, and made Sicily's cars weapons faster. This is a much improved version of the level, maybe some people who owe me F4F can make with some feedback hmm? I assure you that i will give you your feedback if you play my level, it can be an in game review i'm not trying to monopolize anyones day.2011-02-23 02:11:00

Not bad. II hadn't played your other levels so I'm not sure how this is connected. While it's s very nice touch I would ditch the manual transmission as it's not necessary in a destruction lvl like this and just makes things complicated. It was fun, just add more to the levels look.2011-02-24 11:07:00

Okay, so.
I liked the music very much, I think it suited the lvel well. The steering was odd to me, maybe you could add a start menu where it's possible to choose another type of control? (just a suggestion) Also you could make more realistic weapons, also the weapons need sound effects.

The level is a little sticky, sometimes the car wont drive right and holds to walls. I'm not sure but ive heard changing the materials and the bounciness can solve this. With it like it is though I found it very hard to drive.

Also the rear weapon never seemed to work, not sure quite what the idea of it is.

Still, looks promising cheers for the play.

I added a front bumper thats has a little bouncyness and a rear bumper that has no bouncyness, so when you drive into something head on you bounce off, but if you get shot in that bumper (its small) it spins you out. I don't really wanna use realistic weapons because its not a realistic story, in the levels he turns into fire, can throw fire, shurikens, the spear lol.. so it would seem lame to play the car level and hes pumping lead into everything.

also, the reason for the manual transmission is so you can go slow in tight spaces while fully holding the accelerator, then shift it when you hit an open area and go faster.. mow down more baddies, fun multiplyed.. i think it works alot better with the bouncy front bumper cause your not shifting then bam head on collision, momentum stolen, probably getting shot, so now it might be easier for people who don't know the map (everyone but me lol, sometimes i dont consider that, so thnx for helping me find a way to make the two work together better, hope someone tests this and lets me know what they think.

I like the Levels Idea (as it is pretty simiular to my own level )
but the controls were a bit weird.
If you press X you will slowly go fast, but if your release X you will be super fast?
And i would add a Tutorial like thing in the beginning, so you know what button does what.
Actually the controlls were the only thing which made the level not that enjoyable as it could be.
Fix the controls PM me and i will return to this level

EDIT: Oh and I liked the great music

Thanks, I see what you're saying, if you just tap X then you'll shoot off, i never just tapped X so I didn't realize, but I tuned the speed down so its more realistic stopping in 1st gear. and thanks for the comment about my song!!!2011-02-27 02:18:00

everyone else, I think I've shored up most of peoples suggestions (besides the manual transmission, that stays.. i like it.) but I would still like comments on the level, if you notice something jacked up, something not quite working correctly, or just wanna say "i like it please f4f mah level!" please do because I will keep on top of this level just like my others , and I give f4f to all who comment, so thats good for you lol

Hey,

Just finished this up.

Overall it has a great look.
The biggest complaint I have is that when I bump into a wall, and getting off of them is hard if not impossible at times.
Sometimes the power-ups did not pick up or if the did I didn't notice anything happen.
The steering is pretty good, but I think it can still be tweaked to be better
Also you need to make the rear weapons smaller. How about instead of a giant fire, three smaller ones emitting at different angles, I say this because at time the rear weapons stop working if you are too close to a building or wall, making three small ones at separate angles would give good coverage and fix issues like that.

Overall though I liked it, and it was much better than some of the drive and shooters out there.

heh, thats actually what happens when you run over a weapon powerup lol. To make sure you pick them up you have to drive all the way through them.. or back into them (gratuitous location hint) thanks for returning the feedback though2011-03-05 20:01:00

I?m all moved into my new digs and back online again! Thanks for leaving feedback on my Ka-Boom Basketball level. I?m sorry it took so long for me to get back at you. I?m always open to open to F4F. If you ever need someone to give your level a quick test before you go live, hit me up.

Feedback 4 Feedback

Pluses: I like the concept. I like running people over.
Minuses: The level is big enough, but needs more attention to detail.
Undecided: Controls might need to be tweaked slightly or it just might be me .
Suggestions: -500 for killing the blue car!!!! Nooooo!!!! How about -50?
Must Have: More detail.
Creativity: Needs more work on the hard edges and transitions from area to area.

I also took a look at Recalimer of Dikou Souls...

Pluses: Lots of control options! Interesting camera angles and nice job on the cut scenes and story. I liked the respawn option and how you controlled it.
Minuses: Killed for no reason sometimes. Respawn took too long most of the time.
Undecided: Maybe too many control options. I noticed it having an issue with the processing of the complex controls.
Suggestions: Look at the text that it cuts too when you die at the start ? it's at bottom of the screen, not sure you wanted it there. Clean up the areas where it shows hard edges to nothing. Fill the screen with something, maybe some softer edges here and there. Tweak the jumping parts to be smoother.
Must Have: More fluid control of your character. Often times, he didn?t? seem to do what I ?told? him to do.
Creativity: Nice job on the school desks. Take that attention to detail to some of the other parts and you?ll have something great here.
Playability: Frustrating at first, but gets a lot better. I?ll check out your other stuff.
Part 2: Was very frustrating with the controls. I died on a plain rock at the start several times! I think making the controls more fluid would be the #1 thing you could do for the series.
