Demos...

Archive: 9 posts

Can anybody explain to me the point? There are a million of them and they all do the same thing and nobody's made an actual level...i don't see any point or fun in just using a piece of tech for the sake of using it... i would rather actually have a level for it...

BUt maybe i'm just over thinking it... Can anybody explain to me the point? Shouldn't demos and tests be done inside of your moon so that you can make a level with it?

Your right they should be real levels. However it is just creators trying to get a name for themselves. They know their levels will take a while to build and that hundreds and thousands of levels will be made before then. They just want their work to be recognized by people early in the hope that when they finally release their proper level that people will see it and play it.2011-02-19 13:43:00

This new "mode" originated in the beta because people knew they would lose their levels. Therefore nobody (generally speaking) was making full levels.
Now I can see this trend to continue because LBP2 capabilities are making it an even more experimental game in nature compared to LBP1's create mode. People might have ideas or want to make cool concepts and show them right away. It's also alot easier than to actually make a full and it still gives them hearts and plays and whatnot.

While I ultimately see this behavior as damaging in the long run (people never finding enough good full levels getting slowly disinterested of the community part of the game), it has to be expected because that trend makes senses with human nature: taking the easiest path.

i see the points you made, my only point left to make is that there are 500 iron man techs 30 wolverine techs 5 million infamous demos and 300 spiderman demos with ninja and various random character demos mixed in... but i get the whole hey look what i did... but i think it will be more impressive if you say look what i invented and how i can use it.2011-02-20 00:09:00

I made a sackbot demo, in the beta. I did it to test the new tools. I only published it because it was the beta though.
Don't get me wrong, the things being demo'd are pretty good on average, but a proper level would be nicer.

the world of gamer's who play LBP aren't just here to entertain everyone else, they're here to entertain themselves. If I spent 2 years building a classic car back to cherry condition with vintage parts by hand, and feel like showing it off, I will. Maybe I don't plan to build 500 other models, a monster garage full of mechanics, and a huge 20 acre dealership, complete with race tracks, international S class license training, and a social framework to meet other buyers and drivers... or just haven't yet.

Some people don't even build levels, they build contraptions, machines, vehicles, hardware, middleware for other creators, characters, movies, stories etc

Not all these tech demos are the same 'MAH FIRST SACKBOT SHOOT LAZER LVL I WORK ON COME SOON!' either. I hate the 2,000 IORNMAN SACXKBOT TEST levels too (especially since I put out that Alucard level that has 1% as many plays), and I'll give you that, but I don't like any aspect of LBP creation being stereotyped as worthless by a bunch of bad apples. Case in point: Defmunky666's amazing bomb survival levels, and the amazing horde mode levels that could be made in LBP2 if anybody took their time and wasn't convinced it will just be overlooked because the genre itself is stereotyped as lazy.

Though there may be a million people obliviously excited about the double jump chip they made, there are a few people who have or will have things that can and should be shared with the community at large to better everyone's overall standards and performance when the level of quality for that tech & that object becomes the standard for similar objects & tech in current & future levels/games. The Mightymite tank in 2008 LBP1 started as a tank by itself, then it had an obstacle course... just by existing and being visible it set the tone for vehicle modeling, tread, stability, and multi functional logic that made what players ride on and shoot in LBP better, faster, stronger & more fun. Imagine if nobody had ever introduced the first lockbox to the community, and nobody ever thought it was worth putting one out there as an 'idea' - that's just the tip of the iceberg. Johnee's entire career and the standards he set for many things was based entirely on tech demos and previews.

I don't have a problem with the demos. Like Ninja said, some of em are great. I understand what your saying though, and I think people will start building proper levels soon.2011-02-20 02:12:00
