How do you make arcing lightning?

Archive: 8 posts

In Victoria's lab and Avalonia, there are electrodes that arc lightning when they line up. I'm geussing there is a tag sensor or something, but how does the lightning follow the moving electrode until it moves out of its range? Also, how do you make a good bolt of lightning?2011-02-19 02:59:00

I don't know for sure but this is how I would do it.
Firstly I'm pretty sure the lightning is just a hologram animation. So I would have a set of emitters connected to an object with a 'look at tag' chip (I can't remember the actual name)

It would need to only activate at the right distance otherwise it would look quite silly, though, there'd be certain amount of tolerance. I'd just use an invisible piece of hologram material (thin) to mark the zone for with the emitters can activate and actually activate the emitters by putting a collision sensor on the invisible hologram. This would then be activated by another small invisible piece of hologram material (again, thin) stuck onto the electrodes.

I wrote this off of the top of my head, so I may have missed something key or made it overly complex, but It seems like it should work to me.

Why bother with emitters? Hologram can be turned On/Off with different color and visibility settings!2011-02-19 03:18:00

But what if you want the lightning to electrocute people? Does an electrified hologram electrify people when it's turned off? And also, how do you make the lightning seem to follow the electrode? And is it possible to arc lightning between two moving objects?2011-02-20 02:33:00

I believe you can get electrocuted by hologram as long as it is thick-layered...

Also, if you're using hologram material, there's no need to make it follow anything. You just map it out in sections and then activated it in sequence.

You could always use a danger tweaker.2011-02-20 03:20:00
