Little Big Fantasy [RPG] - Prologue

Archive: 7 posts

So uhm this is my RPG level in LBP2, and probably the first turn based RPG with a developped story you will see in this game so far. I worked on this on a daily basis ever since the release date of LBP2, and i was finally able to publish it.

I tried to make it feel like an actual Role-Playing Game, there is a very complex turn-based battle system against a dragon, and a little gameplay part in a forest. I also tried to experiment a little on what could be other RPG gameplay such as interactive dialogue, etc..

Please note that this is just the Prologue, and it contains a really long intro cutscene that introduces you to the storyline. I've had quite alot people complaining about how the intro is too long, but there will be alot less cinematics in the full version..

Here are a few pictures:

I played it, and enjoyed it mostly. I wouldn't reccomend keeping this unaltered for the prologue though. You need to get some player involvement - even if it's just walking to the left in this scene, walking to the right in that scene - to hook players in. The campfire at the start and the scene where the protagonist wakes after the shipwreck are two places you could do this. Consider some of the best RPGs out there: some open with battles, others let you explore (even if they have no real options but to go through a door etc). It's important to get player control in earlier. It'll reduce restlessness and get their attention - restlessness will probably be more significant in LBP, where the player has probably arrived at your level after playing minigames and platformers. The first conversation option comes too late in the game IMO.

I like that the story starts in medias res, which tells the players that you have a plan for the story even if it isn't created yet. The scenery is well made and shows attention to detail. There are some still frames in the campfire scene where it's very noticable that the raindrops are always hitting the same spots - maybe a piston and randomiser on whatever's emitting the rain might vary the rainfall convincingly.

I hope you can keep development moving on this! After playing the intro I don't want to wait too long for the next part

I played it and thought it was really cool! The cinematics were very good but they did get a little long at points, but only just a little. I would have liked it if there had been more places to walk around like in your LBP1 levels, this one seems to rush through the story a bit more.

The biggest addition to this that made it awesome was easily the battle system it was very well built, and the limit break animations were cool. I finally beat the boss by hitting all three character's limit breaks in a row, it was epic!

Great level! Can't wait for the next one!

Ok, Thanks for the feedback guys.

I'm sorry about not having more player involvement in the begin..
I tried to rush a little bit through the story, because i didn't want to add too much story confusion in the prologue..
The intro is basicly the LBP1 version of the level resumed in a cinematic way.. so that also means less gameplay parts..

I learned alot from the community reactions/suggestions on the Prologue, and yeah im trying to improve them on the next parts.. the game will probably not have any "restlessness" anymore, and even in cutscenes i'll try to always have dialogue options and such..

This level was an extraordinary achievement in any respect. The only two problems I had was during platformer section, it was way too dark to see what I was doing. The second part was during the movie and battle scenes, the cinematics would take way too long. Other than that this level series will have alot of potiential. Good job, you got a 'Like' and 'Heart' from me.

Here is a picture summing up the problem with the platforming...

"Hey you two! Get over here and bring the flashlight... and a cup of coffee!"

What do you mean?? That picture seems fine.. Are you playing on a standard TV? or HD?
i'm playing/creating on a HDTV..and the level seemed fine and you can see everything.. I've had alot of people saying the platforming part is too dark.. so maybe it's harder to see what's going on on a standard TV, idk..

Either way thank you.. and i know about the rather long cinematics, there is much more gameplay and not too much scenes in a row in the chapter i'm working on now.. plus most combat animations only take around 2 seconds now..
PS: I hope to have a new chapter published in March or April..
