NEED ADVICE! I can't get no satisfaction!!

Archive: 7 posts

Hey dudes. So I am very frustrated because I thought LBP2 would get my levels more exposure more easily. Yet I find myself back to old tricks such as the wexfordian publish-play shuffle, which i hate doing. I put 100+ hours into all my levels and it is killing me to see the same disappointing numbers as LBP1.

I have excellent badges, pictures, a well decorated earth that showcases the levels, a full profile, and yet I still can't get the numbers all my buddies are getting. Does anyone have any advice for me? I just want my levels and other creators original levels to get the same chance as "Heart this level for free stuff cuz I ruin LBP2" etc.

I hope someone knows something effective I can try!!

Well, if you haven't already, post a thread in the Level Showcase section here on LBPC. Go around to other LBP forums and do the same. Other than that, participating in F4F here on LBPC can really be helpful.2011-02-18 17:10:00

I can really feel for you because I played your latest level Steampunk Pinball and it was excellent. It definitely deserves more than the 38 plays it has. It's got a really good heart to play ratio too.

I noticed you have posted a thread in the level showcase but not a F4F one. If you change it to F4F and are proactive about giving feedback to others that will certainly get you some more plays. I'm afraid that at the moment there are just so many levels out there it must be hard for a lot of people to get recognition for their levels. Anyway, I'll certainly replay and post in your showcase thread and I'll tweet about it too.

Good luck!

Thank you for the excellent suggestions. I am a big proponent of the F4F system here but I currently don't have the time to give people the F4F they deserve should they post in mine. Even so, forums take a lot of time for only a hundred or so plays at the most. I know there are tricks people use to get their levels in various lists such as most busy, most hearted, etc etc. But I think it is near impossible to keep up with people who have made a habit out of this. I wish LBP2 would make a list that gathers all levels with less than a hundred plays that have had 30+ hours of create mode. Like an underdog list.

I also wonder if MM has any plans to improve the situation for creators trying to market levels. Maybe its a cultural thing? There are so few successful levels with original themes, perhaps I expect too much when publishing next to levels benefiting off the strength of an existing name such as Assasins Creed or GTA. Part of me would rather have 400 people play and appreciate the level like Escape LBC for LBP1 than get thousands because I put a popular theme in my creation. (Not to say that any of those theme levels are not incredible and worth playing).

I have the exact same problem... I created a level calling it the Little Big Taxi Company but I'm thinking of changing it to Crazy Taxi just for more plays (I remember once in lbp1 some guy made a rollercoaster level and called it Twilight Eclipse then Harry Potter, then X-Factor Finals and then Spiderman 3! That got him on the cool pages but I could never do something that ridiculous...)
When I first made Little Big Taxi Company I tried to rush loads of plays onto it by publishing it in different forums and doing F4F's all sides hoping it would bounce me onto the cool levels or maybe even the trending page but it didn't get me much except a handful of plays. Its frustrating but the same for a lot of people...
Whats this Wexfordian Publish-Play shuffle thing by the way?? I queued up Steampunk Pinball too it seems pretty highly rated!!

Pretty much all of my levels are underplayed. Most of them are things that haven't been seen before, such as telekinesis on more than one object, or freely teleporting. They have more good ratings than bad ones, but are still hardly noticed. The most plays I've gotten in one of my levels is around 70, and that was after a month of plays. I even have levels with around 3 plays that have been up for over a week. And I have no hearts. 2011-02-19 19:12:00

The wexfordian method i mentioned, (and i call it that cuz I read it in one of his posts, i dont know who actually "invented it"), is to publish your level then immediately play it. Rinse Repeat several times, and it stacks making it appear that many people are playing your level and hopefully propelling it into busiest levels list where it should eventually be sustained by actual plays. If this feels wrong to you then you are in the same boat as me.

What I have learned since this post is it is still going to be hard work to promote your levels, maybe even harder. But there may be something to using your lbp.me page and also Twitter and BookFace. It is recommended elsewhere on the forum to tweet your level's lbp.me page @mediamolecule and @littlebigplanet. I also do @lbpc.
