Sackboy & the Colossus: Prologue

Archive: 16 posts

_k29Sez4Xbk

A short introduction to my work in progress Shadow of the Colossus level series planned for Christmas release.
The full series will span the entire game, with all 16 colossus battles accurately recreated. Utilizing multiple weak-points and vertical climbing.

My PSN is 'Accordion', Please go and try the level and leave any feedback in the level comments.

There are some hidden prizes to win if you explore a little.

Created in the beta, this is just a small test of ideas for my levels:
-Custom high quality textures created using in game materials.
-Costume sharing to get players into character.
-Object depth displacement to move an object between layers when necessary.
-Grab activated vertical climbing.

Everything is currently being remade with much more detail, with the first episode planned for Christmas. I dont get much time to create so the full series will take a long time, but it should be worth it

Frickin Agro was waaaasted.

I really like the architecture. Just beautiful and a very worthy rendition of the games'. I hope the next one actually has a Colossus in it though.

That seems kinda risky. I wouldn't want all of your hard work to be wasted by moderation.2008-11-20 02:17:00

Dont worry, now i have a walking animation setup the colossus building will start. The first will definitely be released by Christmas.

AS for moderation?*It would be unfortunate, but im making these levels for myself more than anything. Applying an external concept has inspired me to push the barriers of the game and i will continue to do so.
With the huge amount of levels still available, the risk seems small. And SCE should take it upon themselves to allow any SCE related content in support of LBP.

After reading some notes in the LBP PS3 Two-Year Anniversary contest, it seems as there's at least a green light for first party properties and anything supported by LBP through costumes, etc. You'll be alright. Good luck with the texturing too.

As for the horse, it's Argo, not Agro. Not to be a nitpicker, but I've seen it so much since LittleBigColossus came out during the beta.

Agro seems a bit tedious to ride to be honest. I like the concept though, can't wait to see how you do the colossi.

You mean in the actual game? Both the manual and Wikipedia say Agro... o.o

Hope you don't mind the constructive criticism....
While your level definatly looks the part... it seems that just holding R1 and slowly waiting for your horse to move... along with waiting for it to move on level ground is just a tad dull. I'm guessing all that there isn't finalised, but i'd definatly look into putting more platforming (bar the colossus) into the level, some natural scenery to climb and such. Otherwise it may not turn out as fun as you'd hope.
Other than that, awesome work and keep it up

Constructive criticism is what this thread is all about.

Almost all of the current level was made was made on the final day of the beta, so it is very rushed. The only thing i added were the climbing examples. The structure of the level suffers the "unglue" problem if i attempt anything else.

I have started from scratch since getting the game, and Agro is the first to be fixed. The horse will is much faster, will only be used for running and will be supported with hidden wheels like the hill climb section at all times for stability, i also have a pretty accurate walking animation using pistons for all four legs.

I wont however be adding features that are not present in SotC, the focus will be the Colossi. This will not be a platform level as such, more my way of forcing external gameplay elements into LBP.
My main problem is making it difficult, with sackboy's infinite grip, climbing isnt much of a challenge. My current idea is to have the grab activate a rotating arm to show how much grip you have, and when it reaches the end, fire hazards appear in the climbing mechanic. I haven't tested it, but i hope the fire would simply bounce the player off upon contact so that the player falls off the colossus rather than dies.

You know, I never looked at the manual before until today. It does say Agro.

Bleh, it doesn't sound like Agro when Wander says it. =P

So much for releasing by christmas?

I simply dont have enough time to create, and after a long day at work or university, if i want to play a game, then i want to play not fiddle about with wires.

delayed until further notice, sorry if anyone was waiting for it.

I wasn't, but now I am.

I only bought SotC recently, and I've been loving it. I even tried constructing my own LBP boss from one of the colossi, but I didn't have a lot of patience and it didn't turn out very well.

Anywho, your prologue looks to have a great sense of art and I'm now anxious to see what you do with the colossi.

Looking pretty nice so far... can't wait to see what you pull off. Looks to be much more faithful than the one's we've seen in the community before, and I admire your ambition. PLEASE back up all your work though, because as lax as the moderation has been lately, you never know...2008-12-24 01:05:00
