seamless teleport? in one door out another?

Archive: 7 posts

Here is what I'm wanting to do . . .

You come to a large open area in a labyrinth with the classic room of many doors and staircases all mixed around. You go in one door and it brings you out another, and going back in that same door can take you to a different door than one that brought you to it.

This is all on one screen with a fixed cam on side view. Is it possible to teleport without any long waiting screen? I think I'll
have the player step back into the door and they'll step back into blackness because I'll have dark holo or something to make them disappear from sight when steeping back, but something back there needs to make them come out another door, like they step back into one and come out another immediately after.

If you make the player control a sackbot, you could make the entranceway of a portal destroy the current sackbot and emit a new one out of the exit portal.2011-02-17 16:28:00

EDIT: Sniped by Speed Racer. Always quickest to the draw.

I think the only "seamless" way of going about this would be having a whole bunch of different sackbots, possibly emitted ones, all set to look like the player, with control over the sackbot governed by which door the player was coming out of.

So... Basically, instead of having one door "teleport" you to another, you're just destroying a sackbot you're controlling upon entering, and having a new one emitted and gaining control of it upon exiting.

I've always found the "activate checkpoint/kill player with gas" method to be a little messy; there's a 2-or-3 second pause between spawning, and you end up with the "sackboy-exits-checkpoint" noise, which is less than subtle.

I think I have a solution for you, but i'll have to test it. Do the doors need to be used more than once each? I have a 1 way and 2-way transporter that works already. I'll be on in about 10-15 mins. If you want me to show you how to do it just add me. PSN: Chicago512011-02-17 16:36:00

Just set you up a controllinator on the door you want to transport to. Hook it's activation output into it's eject. Set it to automatically seat the player and make it's radius large enough to cover the entrance of the door you step into. Put a player sensor on the door you step into and wire it into the activation switch of the controllinator.

I think that should work. When you step into the door, the controllinator will activate. You'll get moved into its seat and immediately ejected. Since you've moved out of range of the player sensor, the contollinator will be de-activated and you won't get pulled back in.

This might work for a single player, but it's dicey for more than one player because as soon as you activate the controllinator, the closest player to it will get pulled into its seat.

Thanks guys! I'll try some.

@Chicago51:

And yes doors have to be used more than once each just like its seen in shows/movies where they might go in the varios doors numerous times trying to find the way. Each door I think will lead to 2 other doors in repeated sequence to help add to that same door does not always lead to same place feel I'm going for.

i was messing around with your idea the other day and made some teleporters that will transport the player to the next in the sequence (TP1 leads to TP2, TP2 leads to TP3, etc) To achieve the effect you're lookin for I'll have to do a bit more tinkering. It shouldn't be too hard. I'll work on it when I get a chance and get back to you.

EDIT: I had a mess around with it last night. I've got a working prototype that seems to do what you're looking for. You'll have to take a look to see if it's suitable for your level. If it is you're welcome to it. It will need to be modified to fit into you're level but I can explain it or if ya want I can set it up for you.
