Controller rumble w/ a controllinator
Archive: 11 posts
Ok. So I have a superb top-down knight-ish character designed and he controls, animates, and responds perfectly. However, I'm trying to take things to the next level, and I would like to implement controller rumble on certain things ( like when he blocks attacks and so forth. My first idea was to try using dangerous material rigged to a piston that pushed it near the sackboy whenever a "Rumble" tag was activated, but he seems unaffected by this while in a controllinator seat. Anyone else have any ideas as to how this can be accomplished? | 2011-02-17 12:56:00 Author: bloomchild Posts: 74 |
I'm not sure what you're getting at with the piston pushing, that sounds like an archaic approach to anything. But aside from that, you can't invoke the vibration functions of the controller. | 2011-02-17 13:33:00 Author: Foofles Posts: 2278 |
so what does make the controller rumble, i have played community levels before where the controller has rumbled at certain points. | 2011-02-17 14:06:00 Author: steadler Posts: 180 |
It's the game engine, it rumbles around hazards and things. I guess it just clicked what he was getting at in the OP But aside from hazards, you can't control it. And your collisions are disabled while in a control seat so I guess the hazard warning is as well. | 2011-02-17 14:12:00 Author: Foofles Posts: 2278 |

Strange. I would've thought that would work. Perhaps push it overlapping the DCS in the layer behind? If not you might be able to do something exploiting the rumble generated by an impact, say, by putting a solid object on a piston and have it collide repeatedly with whatever the DCS is attached to. | 2011-02-17 14:16:00 Author: Aya042 Posts: 2870 |
can you not put an impact sensor connected to a hazzourd, would that work, so when something hits you it would rumble? | 2011-02-17 15:09:00 Author: steadler Posts: 180 |
@ Aya042 - yeah, that's gonna be the next thing I try. I have a feeling it probably wont work though. | 2011-02-17 17:23:00 Author: bloomchild Posts: 74 |
How about using a camera with 100% shake and a rumbling sound effect together. So when the player's near a specific point you could activate the camera shake and sound effect. That's about all I can think of as there's no way to utilise the pad's rumble feature (sadly). | 2011-02-17 20:21:00 Author: Frogmeister Posts: 236 |
*sigh* I've tried several different things and nothing has worked. I'm afraid it's impossible to achieve a physical rumble while seated in a controllinator | 2011-02-17 20:34:00 Author: bloomchild Posts: 74 |
I wonder if maybe you could fake it? Let's suppose, instead of seating the player inside a control seat, you seal 'em in a box somewhere off-screen. You put a controllinator near them with "controlled by nearest player", and use it to control a sackbot remotely - and fake the game camera with a piece of holo with a game camera on it that tries to follow all player-controlled sackbots. Then the sackbot can sit in the vehicle's control-seat and the real sackboy can be threatened with lethal items off-screen. Of course, there's lots of limitations here: As far as I know you can't use the D-pad in this setup (can't disable popit controls if the player isn't actually seated) - which limits your options a bit for vehicle control and also means the illusion's not perfect... And if I'm not mistaken it also means you can't use the normal checkpoint system to respawn - plus all the other limitations of sackbots... And the player can't be off-screen or he'll eventually get killed off... Hm, I don't know - maybe there's a way it could be made to work, but it seems like too much trouble. | 2011-02-17 23:47:00 Author: tetsujin Posts: 187 |
Hmmm... Sounds interesting. I never thought of that. I'll prototype it later tonight and see if it works. | 2011-02-18 00:38:00 Author: bloomchild Posts: 74 |
