Eww, what is THAT!?

Archive: 6 posts

So, I have to finally admit it. I have no idea how to build a level. Well, not true. I have no idea where to START. I have a story idea but I'm not sure how to go about LBPing it. By that I mean, I'm not sure how to go about building everything. I really would rather not used game items (things such as trees and etc used in the story levels) but I don't quite have it in my head how I should get started building what I need. I guess what I'm looking for is direction or personal experience. How did YOU decide how you wanted your tree, building, frog, mutant unicorn puppy etc. to look when you first started out. Any help you can give would be beyond appreciated. Thanks in advance!

When I first started creating, I didn't think much of that, so I'll skip to when I started to care:

Basically the first time I seriously wanted to create something I would first take a simple thing I needed, like a tree. The tree, I made from materials that best represented it; the woods and the spongys. From there, it depended on your style. If you wanted a bubbly level then the tree would be all round and stuff. If it was a serious kind of level, make it as realistic a tree as you can. After one thing just keep building... think it all out one at a time and soon you'll have a level.

On a semi-related note, the grid and the corner-editor tools are my best mentors and partners. Use them.

Well ive only created 2 levels so far but for me, i started with a general idea, from there i planned out what i wanted to include then just played around with things until i was happy with the design. Most of this was on paper then i transferred the design to LBP. Some ideas were good others not so good. My first level is still a work in progress but it has already taught me a lot. As for designing things to include, just start playing around with the materials and let your imagination run wild. The corner editor is always a good tool when creating your own items.

Hope that helps give you some ideas, if you would like some help i would be more than happy to help you create items or an entire level.

Great advice so far. Keep it coming, if you will. The advice on using the grid and corner editor makes a lot of sense. By the way, if anyone ever wants to add me to their friends list and show me give me an example in person, I'd be more than happy to make myself available. Every little bit helps.2011-02-17 03:31:00

One technique I really like to use when designing things, is to doodle them on a piece of paper, and then try to recreate the doodle in LBP as faithfully as possible.

I am by no stretch of the imagination a competent artist. But when they're inserted into a world with very realistic textures, colors, and lighting, my elementary-level doodles look endearing, at least to me.
