Sackbot Actors: A Director's Lament

Archive: 6 posts

Hey Y'all,

I'm working on a film tribute level, and I'm trying to get the most out of my sackbots. So far, I'm really happy with everything that sackbots can do, but I want to do more with them, like things that probably aren't possible, hence the internet posting.

I'm trying to do a scene that involves an over-the-shoulder shot, I can't seem to make that happen. If I set the sackboy to act, then he will always face forward, so I can't get my shot that way. I could spin the camera to the left of the sackbot and make the sackbot face right, but then the sackboy would not be able to act. That's basically the problem: The camera always wants to look at the front of sack people and the sack people always face the camera, so I feel like trying to get this over-the-shoulder shot is a waste of time.

Then I think about levels like the Vietnam FPS level. Say what you will about that level, but I think it's amazing that the sackbot actors are holding guns and shooting them directly at you while you seem to be controlling a sackbot from a real first person perspective. I wish I knew the secrets behind that level! How do the sackbots hold and fire guns, and how does the first person work? I guess there's a layer glitch at work there, but what is that all about? Can I use a trick like that to get camera angles of sackbot actors from behind, or even from the side? Anything but facing straight forward at the camera. Thoughts?

I haven't seen the level you're talking about, but you might consider doing your acting by directly manipulating a controllinator instead of recording actions. You can wire batteries into the buttons and thumbsticks on a controllinator as long as it's on a bot and it will trigger the actions. I haven't tried it while a sackbot is looking to one side or the other (that's follow/flee behavior, right?), but I think it should work.

Obviously this is more complicated than using a recording--you have to run batteries of different strength through OR gates into the buttons/thumbsticks and place them on a sequencer--but on the plus side, you can make subtle changes to your animations. Want your bot to nod just a bit slower at this scene? Make the batteries for that part a bit longer on the sequencer. Want his hand just a bit higher at the next scene? Add a couple percentage points to the battery feeding into his arm and it'll go higher. Another plus is that you don't get that ugly jump when turning animations on/off or looping them.

I've been struggling to find a way to get an over the shoulder shot as well, the only way i've found to spin the sackbot is if you go to the sticker section you can spin the sackbot by pressing R1 or L1, but as soon as you leave the bot jumps back round to normal again! still serching for an answer, but the fact that you can spin the bot around must mean that its possible somehow..... surely???2011-02-17 08:10:00

In the Vietnam cps level you don't actualy control a sackbot it just looks like you do, it's all an illusion. So in order to get that over the shoulder look create something that looks like a sack boy or sack girl then use that for your OTS. If you keep your key lighting low nobody will know plus it will help with any enigma codes ect. Or if you need high key lighting decorate a sackbot so it looks like it's facing away from the camera2011-02-17 10:26:00

I think I know what you mean...
Like, the sackbot will look towards you? (AKA The screen), instead of left or right?

If that's the case, set your sackbot to look at a tag, and place that tag in the direction you want it to look.

Thanks for the responses everyone. I discovered that a sackbot can be an "actor" and a "looker" at the same time. I thought that the recorded acting would override the "look at tag" settings, but evidently you can combine these two functions. I would love, like spacemonkey mentioned, to be able to just tell a sackbot to do an about-face, for example, to have a professor sackbot turning his back to the camera to scribble on a chalkboard. Maybe MM will patch in some more acting features like this later. Meanwhile, I'm still struggling to comprehend how enemy sackbots in the Vietnam FPS level can operate firearms. Maybe I'm missing some DLC that would enable these guns as costume pieces with related sackboy animations, kind of like the free fragrances that only animate the sackperson spraying perfume or slapping on aftershave. Does anybody know how that stuff works? I've looked for the Vietnam FPS level on lbp.me but I can't seem to find it. It's an extremely popular level though, so finding it in-game should be pretty easy if anyone hasn't seen it.2011-02-18 16:36:00
