Invisible material when you go behind it!

Archive: 10 posts

I don't know if anyone has ever suggested this, but i think a good idea would be to make a tweak for materials so that they are solid, but when you walk behind them they turn invisible! This would be really great for making secret spots behind walls and would make vehicles more realistic. For example if your making a train level and your going from car to car, imo it would look a lot better if all the trains had walls so it didn't look like they have a whole side missing, but then they turn invisible when you go in that car so that you can see inside while your inside2011-02-16 17:43:00

i agree, it has been something i've tried believe me! haha, I just think it would look a lot more clean and visually pleasing if it was that way, or you just have it in a spot, where it's just invisible where your sackboy is, would make for some cool levels

Why not just attach a destroyer to the front wall attached to the player sensor and the destruction set to "disappear", this would make it apear to go invisible,(although it is being destroyed) and upon exiting the cart emit the wall abck into place.... or something like that maybe?

This would definitely work, but I think the idea here is more about aesthetics. It'd be nice to have the wall do a nice quick fade out. Or you could even adjust the transparency and the time it takes to fade. I definitely think this needs to be in the game.

Seems like an easy addition that would add that extra bit of polish to our levels.

yes the aesthetics more than anything, the whole idea came across my mind when i played new super mario bros. wii, I believe that game has a kind of disappearing secret wall system like I am explaining

This feature is realy needed. If you got some kind of skyscraper or any big house with a complex front( fireladder, lights, airconditioners, etc.) like you'd imagine it in some midtown areas, you can barely move this whole thing upwards, or destroy and respawn it. I just recently had this problem. In my case it was some destroyed house so I just made a lot of broken windows so you can look into the rooms well enough.
This is not soley needed for aesthetics, but also for functionality!
Yet I doubt such a major new feature could be delivered within a patch, LBP3 I guess

Guys, I've dumped on a quick level showing how I've done it before, I know you want an material to do this for aesthetics etc but i think this gives the same sort of outcome in the ean time:

What you can't see as I forgot to enable it: A Micro chip on the front wall with a anti grav modder and a tag sensor set to green and hooked to a destroyer set to fade. The emitter is activated on the red key and emits the front wall also set to fade.

Sorry if this is not any help, just thought I'd give it a go!

I have an idea, to make it look as if the wall is still there, copy it, and change the material to holo, with an animation speed of 0. place it in the same spot as the wall, and viola! when sackboy enters, it looks as if the wall has become transparent.2011-02-17 12:34:00

I assume that you place a sticker on the holographic material that makes it look like that wall, right? I'll try this out later.

Anyways, although I likewise support the idea of a solid material in which its transparency can be tweaked, I think that it'll be better, and more flexible, if there was a "Transparency Tweaker" object in the Tools Bag, which is placed on the object that you'd like to make )partially) transparent.
