Ok, So I have seen this done in several levels, but have no idea how to do it... How do you extend the game materials beyond the three playable planes so that you can customise the foreground and background of a level?

Try searching for "3D layer glitch" in the Community section. There should be quite a few people giving away objects or having tutorial levels of how to use this glitch
