IMB Computer Vs. Jeopardy

Archive: 17 posts

For those of you who don't know: IBM has built a computer which is currently in the middle of playing Jeopardy against two of the game's most legendary winners. I've just started watching the second episode of the challenge and the computer is tied for first.... no, just went to first place.

What do you guys think about this? I think it's awesome that computer science is advancing this far (granted, I would find it cool, I'm majoring in Computer Science, lol).

Well that's not fair... the computer has the Internet on its side.2011-02-16 03:09:00

Nono, that's the beauty of it: It's not connected to the internet.

I watched it today. Man, I lmao when one of the guys answered the final Jeopardy question (something to do with 19th-Century Writers I think?) and he put, along with his answer, "I for one welcome our new computer overlords." Oh man I just could not stop laughing.2011-02-16 23:22:00

It wont be as interesting and Kasparov Vs. Deep Blue.

I was actually sad watching this.

While it's amazing the leaps technology is going by, it is making us obsolete.

Humans are not the strongest, fastest or best at anything on this planet, except thinking.
but now, with computers, what do we have? Metal and plastic can outdo us.

Unless we expand upon biogenetic engineering, we as humans are going to be useless within the next few decades.

Yes, but it was us humans that made that plastic and metal. Always, Creators>Creations.

Yes, but it was us humans that made that plastic and metal. Always, Creators>Creations.

Not if we are making machines that can outdo us.

If you make a robot that can run faster than a man, that would trump the creator, no?
Thinking is the same thing.
And what about when we make robots that can build themselves?

The day we invent a fully autonomous robot is the day you need to stockpile your ammunition.

Deep Blue calculated every possible manuever(in the millions), then chose the most likely to succeed based on predicting it's oponents moves, that is humanly impossible. As stated in the video, humans can't sift through that much at one time, we go by what we know from experience and hope it's up to par. The same tech that made Deep blue is now in the average computer. Every chess game on a pc stems from Deep Blue.

Ah, but the beauty (or the ugly side) of being human is the ability of free will and thought, unlike computers where as they rely on programming.

Gentlemen, I think we may have talked ourselves into another *puts on sunglasses* scientific discussion. YEAH!

To the thread!

You are more programmed than you think and don't have as much freewill as you would think.

A loud noise or a sudden movement in front of your eyes and all of the millions of years of human evolution are thrown out of the window and the medulla oblongata (Lizard Brain) takes over full controll of your body, acting purely on instinct.

We could teach a computer to have freewill and thought. Pretty soon, with the advent of "Quantuum Computing" (current computers run on binary, 1=On 0=off... Quantuum COmputers have a 3rd state ?=Maybe - as in "Maybe On, Maybe Off". This allows it to do calculations on a much larger scale.) Pretty soon they'll be able to fully and acurately model a human brain, and then improve upon it.

IN other news, Apple and Microsoft are merging to become Cyberdyne Systems

Bah! The Robot Holocaust is just a scam to sell us canned goods and Robot shelters. Robots will always be dumber than humans
No! the humans are catching on!
