Where to start... Well I'm writing this thread because I'm very interested in space which I know many people are so this could make some good discussion. Lets get down to business the first topic will be aliens by this I mean intelligent life forms thriving on another planet much like we are now (debatable). Do you believe there are aliens out there? In my opinion there are aliens out there but they're so far away relative to space terms seeing as our sun for example is considered close although it is very far away. I believe they are very similar in development to us in terms of technology but would potentially look very different as they may have originated from a different source to us and may have adapted to different climate conditions. If they were as they are depicted in films and books surely they would of contacted us by now so if they are roughly (give our take 10000 years) as developed as us surely that would be feasible of course they could be less developed then us. Maybe we are special in the sense that were the only ones but that seems impossible considering the vastness of the universe. What do you think? Rules: Don't be stupid. Keep it sensible. Don't make this turn in to all out war of opinions lets just have a nice discussion. | 2011-02-15 20:16:00 Author: MasterCreator Posts: 464 |
With the vastness of the universe and the uncountable ammount of galxies and stars, it is impossible to say that we are the only life in this universe, im glad a thread like this came up because i LOVE space, with a passion. I am 100% sure that there is life beond the cosmos, and they're there, waiting to be found. | 2011-02-15 20:21:00 Author: Hellobob5 Posts: 382 |
As shakespeare once said (I think): "I could be bounded in a nutshell, and count myself king of infinite space" And as for aliens, are you familiar with the drake equation? N=R*Fp*Ne*Fl*Fi*Fc*L? (got it from Big Bang Theory, I was sheldon and now I know it by heart lol). http://www.activemind.com/Mysterious/Topics/SETI/drake_equation.html The R is an N and the FL at the end and my L at the end are the same, just a different symbol | 2011-02-15 20:37:00 Author: moonwire Posts: 1627 |
It is a sign of human arrogance that so many ppl believe we are the only intelligent life forms in the universe. Statistically that is highly improbable. | 2011-02-15 20:40:00 Author: EinRobot Posts: 739 |

Not another Alien discussion.... There will be several more topics to come... @Moonwire Even if you go onto the lowest setting for number of planets per star ecologically able to sustain life which is 0.33 I'm sure the chances are smaller than that right? | 2011-02-15 21:40:00 Author: MasterCreator Posts: 464 |

The universe is vast, we have really explored the smallest fraction of it. How could we possibly know of all the stars/planet combinations that could support life. | 2011-02-15 21:51:00 Author: EinRobot Posts: 739 |
Ah, an alien thread... this can't go well. The universe is vast, we have really explored the smallest fraction of it. How could we possibly know of all the stars/planet combinations that could support life. We explore them, of course. *Goes Captain Kirk mode.* Space... the final frontier. | 2011-02-16 01:00:00 Author: CyberSora Posts: 5551 |
I am still searching for intelligent life on earth. | 2011-02-16 01:32:00 Author: EinRobot Posts: 739 |
I am still searching for intelligent life on earth. Your looking in the wrong places. (http://img.metro.co.uk/i/pix/2009/01/BedroomPA_450x300.jpg)....I'm not implying anything... | 2011-02-16 02:19:00 Author: MrFunctionality Posts: 637 |
It is a sign of human arrogance that so many ppl believe we are the only intelligent life forms in the universe. Statistically that is highly improbable. Statistacally, there is no reason (yet) to think anything other, than we are the only life in the universe. It's a sign of human gullibilty that we have invented these extra-terrestrial beings, and postulated what they might look like and how they might interact with us, having absolutely no proof for them what-so-ever. The Drake equation depends on your own personal interpretation of the universe. An optimist would see that equation and surmise that the universe must be teeming with life, a pessimist would conclude that we are the only life in the universe, and the only life that ever will be. I'm in the pessimist camp, even with the vastness of the universe, the incredibly small chance that life could develop at all means that it's probably never going to happen - and seeing as we are proof that it already has - the chances of it happening twice are even more remote. Also, there is no agreed consensus as to what "intelligence" actually is. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JWVshkVF0SY | 2011-02-16 06:42:00 Author: Macnme Posts: 1970 |
well the way I look at it is this. How many planets are in the Universe? A. ??? How many planets have sustained life? A. 1 Hmmmm... p.s. The Drake equation is rendered scientifically meaningless, since we have no idea of the magnitude of most of the coefficients. it was interesting back in 1961 though. | 2011-02-16 07:17:00 Author: EinRobot Posts: 739 |
Perhaps if the truth was known, we as a planet might come to terms that we're all the same species, and cease the bloodshed due to differences in ideology, religion, skin color and so forth. (Of course we'd still have that "greed" thing to contend with.) | 2011-02-16 07:35:00 Author: horizon Posts: 14 |

I just find it funny that the solution to world peace could involve the Fresh Prince in any way. | 2011-02-16 07:37:00 Author: EinRobot Posts: 739 |
Exactly, even when it was first devised the drakes equation was meaningless - as it varied from 1 to billions upon billions... quite the margin of error. But given the vast distances of space, and the immense time periods involved with planetary formation and evolution, the chances that two species originating from different planets evolving to a point where they can detect each other by any means - and then have some kind of meaningfull exchange is so close to zero you may aswell say "It's Impossible" ; SETI is clutching at straws... we don't even know what method of cummunication they would be using and are basing it on our own preconceptions... so we aren't searching the universe for alien species... we're searching the universe for species exactly like us. The deafening silence betrays the truth. We are alone in the universe. Good, it means no-one but ceiling cat is watching us One of my favourite quotes: "It is known that there are an infinite number of worlds, simply because there is an infinite amount of space for them to be in. However, not every one of them is inhabited. Therefore, there must be a finite number of inhabited worlds. Any finite number divided by infinity is as near to nothing as makes no odds, so the average population of all the planets in the Universe can be said to be zero. From this it follows that the population of the whole Universe is also zero, and that any people you may meet from time to time are merely the products of a deranged imagination." You should have just posted in the Scientific discussion thread instead of starting a new just about aliens. | 2011-02-16 09:50:00 Author: Bremnen Posts: 1800 |
You don't understand this is the first of many topics when this topic dies out I will change the topic but still make it about space. I've got a few topics in mind. | 2011-02-16 16:22:00 Author: MasterCreator Posts: 464 |
