LittleBigZelda Engine V1.0

Hello Everyone,
I've recently started working on a top down, Zelda style engine and I'd like to get a little feed back on what I've got
so far. I've decided to stay away from using sack bots to make the perfect link costume until there's a fix for them
breaking the controlinator.

Recently Finished:
- Moving and climbing Crates

- Climbing Ledges

- Updated Sword Animation

- Day Night system
^ Includes day sounds with birds and music from Majora's Mask (Termnia Field) along with night sounds

- New Map piece added - Hyrule Castle
^ A little empty for now, but the Guards make it look better

Still in the works, and just hit a little over half on the thermo.

A few pictures I have of an earlier build:

Rupees

Queue the level up and tell me what you guys think
I've been hard at work trying to fix problems that show up, and so far everything is working as it should.

Thanks!

I like the idea of an engine.

Looks decent so far. The HUD looks nice, though it might work better in if it lived in the upper corner of the screen as in the original. The visuals look a little bland at the moment; some decorations would definitely help and that wood material you're using for the grass might read better with one of the green sponges. Right now it looks like Hyrule has been hit by a drought 2011-02-14 17:49:00

I've gotten, "the HUD needs to be in the corner many times" but the only issue I have with that is making a system where it's NOT attached to link's cardboard under piece or a piece of hologram that allows you to jump/climb. A follower won't work since it would never stay in the top left, unless someone can give me an idea to make it work.

It doesn't look like Hyrule got hit with a drought in Ocarina of Time?

That's Ocarina graphics. Those are terrible for a reason.

The middle of the follower is where the follower is positioned. SO... if there was an invisible hologram connected to the HUD while it's in the corner, you can extend the invisible hologram to where Link is and attach the follower to the hologram that was extended to where Link is. Like a fishing pole.

But if you're able to turn the camera in your version, then you'll need to attach the hologram to Link and make the HUD follow the hologram.

I've found the best technique is putting both the HUD and Camera into the follower - Keeps the HUD perfectly still

Sure it does, but they also had 64 pixel textures to work with. Anyway, you did ask our opinions...

That's true I did, but I am more concerned about the engine. I understand your view on the dullness of the map and even though I thought the map looked alright, I will try and make it look a little more alive. The reason it may look so dull is for thermo use, most people will play for story, not for scenery.

Also thanks for the HUD ideas! I understood Cryogen's "fishing hook" idea and will try to add it in. The problem I'm seeing though is my camera has an upward pointing view, so the HUD may not look as clean.

Thanks for the replies!

Consider adding the roll attack. Why they call it an attack, I don't know, it's more of a dodge, because it doesn't hurt anybody, but I found the walking speed to be a drag, and when that happens to me in the real zelda games, I spam the roll button. If you can't figure out how to implement that, consider the Pegasus boots or something... I hear Link is finally going to be able to dash on his own in Skyward Sword anyways.2011-02-15 10:23:00
