Raiders of the Last Couric

Archive: 15 posts

My First attempt in LBP2 on a "Normal" Level. I'm making use of the new gameplay elements LBP2 brings to the table. It's pure hardcore platforming challengeness with some pretty cool visuals.

As always I make my levels hard but doable. You might want to take it easy on some parts, and keep on trying. Unfortunately most LPB players like there levels clean and simple, I however don’t see the fun in that.

The adventure starts by drilling your way towards a Crystal Cave in an attempt to find the Last Couric. There isn’t much room for improvement as this level is 99% full. (Cant even add 1 more bubble!!) So if you suggest to add or add complexity to the level, please also point out the lesser parts so I can delete it and redo it.

As I wrote in-game, this level is hard and frustrating through the level, but you are more frustrated of your own abilities, because when I completed it, it was really rewarding. 1st place so far.2011-02-15 10:08:00

It's a visually appealing and beautifully crafted level.

However it is very challenging and in some places unnecessarily difficult and frustrating It's fine if this was intended, but maybe you should work in some variety.
While playing it you easily get into a "Please no more burning spinning platforms!" -mood.

In my opinion it would be overall more fun to play if not every part would be too hard, and if there were some more relaxed parts, where you just bounce and get some score combos for example before you move on to the next deadly challenge.

Thnx for the reviews peeps!

Ghik16 i'v added more bubbles and also some extra combo possiblilties. And beat your score hehe! try to beat mine.

Chewbacca815: I consider myself a hardcore gamer and when i make a level i try to make them abit hardish. Thats my problem. Most people don't like their levels to hard, and i get loads of dislikes because people cant finish them. But if i make them to simple i dont have any fun playing my own levels. I'm working on an Elite level atm its hardcore to the bone, and it rewarding when you finish it because it is so extremely hard. (Ill que up ur level and check it out later)

Woot second place! This was quite a challenge - it's well designed but I have to admit I have a problem with lots of fire in lbp2 - I can't see what's going on clearly but that might just be me. The only part I had confusion with was near the end when you activate the spinning fire things. Up until then you have players pushing forward so I didn't expect to back track, maybe a movie cam or hologram arrow would help with the level flow.

These are very minor niggles though, overall it was very entertaining and the opening was sweet, great work

First of all, the good: This level is stunning. I absolutely loved the visuals and the intro with the drill was inspired. Very, very nice. There was some very solid level design and a lot of the level really worked well, so please know that you've done a good job!

The level does have a few drawbacks that you may want to consider, though. Firstly the visuals can sometimes get in the way of the level design occasionally, there are times when basically everything is on fire and it can be difficult to see certain platforms. Also, I fear that a lot of the "hardcore" challenge of this level is not down to clever, challenging level design but instead the fault of random, unpredictable and un-synced timings on platform rotations/lethalization and some poor checkpointing. If platforms rotate at different speeds then it can become rare for an optimum time to make the jumps to make itself apparent, this sort of movement should be predictable and have a fast "reset" time or else it becomes frustrating rather than difficult.

There is a point where you need to traverse two staircases that spontaneously burst into flames, these seem to light up in a random order and stay lit for far too long; in a level where dying is frequent it can seriously break up the flow when you have to wait 4-5 seconds for a platform to stop being on fire so that you can move on.

I noticed a "bug" of sorts on the staircase that comes out of the wall in an early room. It is far to easy to fall between the platforms and be crushed. The it doesn't look like you should be able to fall between them or that doing so would kill you but it does because there's -just- enough space to fall and -just- too little space to survive. I would suggest moving them closer together to remove the issue, or further apart to make the danger obvious to the player.

There is also one part where you have to grab onto an inactive light bulb to deactivate some lethal platforms. It's not immediately obvious that there is a connection, I would suggest implementing a camera to show that these platforms are now safe because you grabbed the light along with an obvious "ticking" sound to indicate that they need to hurry. As it is right now I pulled the light, but wasn't really aware of what had happened until I died and had to do it a second time.

For "hardcore" platforming philosophy, take a look at Super Meat Boy if you haven't already. Nothing about any of those levels is unpredictable, at a glance you can see precisely what is expected of you to reach the end and every saw blade moves in a precise way in relation to all other moving parts in the level; and yet they are still insanely difficult and not frustrating.

My point is that "clean and simple" doesn't necessarily mean easy. You can still make a really difficult level that is also user friendly.

Please don't take any of this personally, people don't tend to get this kind of constructive criticism from me unless I really want to see them do well. This level is good, but it could be great; you already have a real eye for making really nice looking levels. Keep it up!

I came here b/c I played this level while helping the Spotlight crew clear their backlog. I was going to do a long review, but GHudson beat me to it.

The level is pretty good, but like he said, too much randomness. And some of the obstacles are way, way too twitchy to be any fun. Challenging, yes, but not the fun kind of challenge.

Also, the fire everywhere makes it realllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllly hard to see what's going on. I have an enormous high-def plasma TV; I can't even imagine how tough this would be on a smaller display. If you have the captured lava material from LBP1 (if not, let me know and I'll give it to you), you could use that in place of much of the more decorative fire elements. Would make things much easier to see.
