Brainstorming a medieval/jousting level

Archive: 6 posts

Last night I started working on a medieval-themed level. There's not much of a level there yet but I've created a vehicle/animal that I think has a lot of very fun potential, and thought I'd get some of the other creative minds here to help me get the most out of it.

I used the kratos horse stickers (and some diligent edge-shaving) to create something kind of like the wooden steed, only cooler (if I may say so myself). I then added a giant dagger to the front (and stickered it up to make it look a little less like just a giant dagger), so it's like a jousting horse. I've created a couple of enemy horses that are electrified (so you can't touch them) and that shoot out balls of electrified glass that you have to avoid long enough to get to the horses and slay them (more on that next paragraph).

My initial inclination was to have them throw impact explosives but they kept blowing up the "grass" (green felt) I created on the floor, thus causing divets that kept turning the horses upside down (not to mention occasionally blowing their own faces off). The dagger has a hidden magnetic key that slays the enemy horses, leaving behind just a head (hmm... future repurposing for a Godfather level? :hero.

If you want to see the work I've done on it so far, search for my level "Combolock" (or just search for levels by GeoSoto18 ... and feel free to add me because I like friends ). This may seem kind of extreme but I built a lockbox of keys to my levels because I like to show my unfinished work to people but I hate having random people stumbling across them and going "wtf is this?!" and tagging it stuff like "short" and "lousy" even though I put right in the description that it is not a finished level.

Within combolock, just ignore everything to the left (decoys), head right until you see a white hut/house/building/whatever ... and then on the lower left white panel slap on these stickers: cow udders, skeleton hand and duck. Go back to the left, grab the keys (this will also let you check out my other work-in-progress.. midnight express part one) and then head back to the right to finish the level. Then you can access Joust Demo.

I'd like to know what you think of the concept, of the vehicles themselves, ways that you find the control to be awkward, and any just random thoughts that you think could flesh out the concept. I don't want the entire level to just be slicing through enemy horses.. I have started (in an unpublished crater) some designs for a swinging bridge, and I have some ideas for draw-bridge puzzles. I've noticed a lot of people here have really good ideas and figured I'd pick a few braaaaiiins.

I like the basis of your design. And the ?lock? scheme. Although the your explanations leave me with a question.

If the horses are on parallel layers wont there be a collision of the two?

I should have mentioned that the enemy horses are made of stickered-up dissolve material. The magnetic key on the dagger makes them dissolve (except the head, because I like the idea of leaving a head behind )

Did you check out the level?

Hmm, pretty cool idea. This sounds like a good, original level. Too bad I can't play it 2008-11-19 00:12:00

Why's that? Does the combolock not work for you?

Update: Level now has an army of horses for you to smite... still a lot of smoothing out to do on the discarding of their bodies. I think the next obstacle after that will be a wave of archers shooting flaming arrows. Stay tuned
