Hover-Technology

Archive: 25 posts

I've recently created a hover-tank and published a level for it (PSN ID: "Shuriken_Star"). Its hover system seems to work very well, so I've been trying to think of some other vehicles that could use my hover system, but tanks and cars are all i can think up. Any ideas of vehicles using my hover system will help a lot, and if anyone is interested in working with me on making those vehicles you can add my PSN ID (put "LBPC - Hover-Tech" in friend request so I know why you're adding me)2011-02-13 07:37:00

Zeppelijn, Air balloon, Hover car which can move in the air/on the ground and water. Those would be cool in levels 2011-02-13 15:23:00

Well, my tank just hovers, it cannot fly, it just keeps itself a certain distance from the ground (or other material objects) under it and it can tilt itself to best suit the slope of the ground as well. Zeppelins and hot-air ballons can "fly" by reducing their overall density, so they're closer to flying than just hovering, even though they can stay in place in the air. A custom jet-pack would be cool... but we already have one, so it's nearly pointless.2011-02-13 19:31:00

Add a mover and it should be able to fly easily, unless you have it set to never move ever (cant remember the anti grav setting, second one down in tweak menu)2011-02-13 19:34:00

I don't want my tank to fly, it just stays above the ground at a preset distance, kinda like a real-life hovercraft without the rubber skirt. I'm just looking for ideas of vehicles that could drop their wheels or treads and switch to my hover system.2011-02-16 22:05:00

Tweak it so it bobs up and down slowly like Avalon's platform. Then you can apply it to hoverboards and such.2011-02-16 22:20:00

You could use your system to make ground effect vehicles.

Out of interest, is your hovering system a mover and a toggle switch? 2011-02-18 16:40:00

@ bloomchild: I've never thought of that! That'd definitely be cool! Speaking of Star Wars, I could actually make the pod racers! I'll definitely work on it as soon as I can get back on LBP 2!
@ Fish94: No, the only way my hover system can move vertically is if the ground it's over slopes up or down, and it also rotates to match the slope of the ground. Horizontal movement actually does use an advanced mover though, but it's limiting the speed of my tank and the slope it can climb at full speed without contacting the ground. I am still working on a solution to remove the movers, since their directions don't rotate with the vehicle (example: if the tank is on a vertical wall, which is possible if you gradually slope up, moving forwards or backwards moves the tank into or away from the wall instead of up or down the wall). As for how the tank stays above the ground & rotates with its slope, it's a secret but as soon as I perfect it, I'll be more than glad to share my hover system.

Maybe a hover board like in the Jak and Daxter series would be pretty cool.2011-03-09 21:18:00

I threw together something similar to a hover mode yesterday for the sackbot in my level. I initially wanted him to be able to jump in the middle of an active hover, but that would have required completely redoing the jump mechanics that are already in place for sackbots, and from my experience with my last level I didn't want to revisit that territory. So I ended up doing the reverse and allowing him to activate hover in mid-jump. The hover mode lasts only a few seconds and doesn't recharge until he touches ground again, so players will have to use it wisely. Together with a custom grappling hook, I think this will make for some interesting mechanics.2011-03-10 00:45:00

I've made a few things with hover like functions... and i've made vehicles that can use just one wheel and balance and all kinds of stuff, i can give you all kinds of ideas, but then, i'd want to help.2011-03-10 01:43:00

@ Shadow_Wolf_1987 -- I'll give a hoverboard a try, I'll probably make 2 versions, one for sackpeople only & another for sackbots only. The sackbot version would obviously contain more features.
@ flamesterart -- You'd be more than welcome to help me (and I will credit you accurately), you can add my PSN ID "Shuriken_Star" (put "LBPC" into friend request, so I remember where it's from)

With my sackbot hover system, it'd be fairly simple for me to add a "hover-jump" feature. I'll put it into the next update for my Hover-Tech tutorial level.

Tanks aren't the only grounded fighting vehicles you know. There's mobile anti-air turrets, IFVs armed with anti-tank missiles or machine guns, APCs, MLRS, artillery, and even more exotic weapons like sonic cannons (as seen with the Shatterer in Command & Conquer 3: Kane's Wrath). You could even mount stuff like a bridge builder or a radar dish on these hover platforms.

By the way, I've queued your level up so that I'll play it when I get the chance.

I already realized that tanks aren't the only vehicles that could really use a hover system, which is why I decided to publish my system on LBP2 & see what vehicles other people come up with. My tank is merely an example of the applications for this, and not a complex one either. I've actually been wanting to build a Shatterer, or better yet the Zone Shatterer, but I'm also working on other projects. I'll probably make one when I'm finished with my other projects.

I just played your level earlier today, and it seems as if your hover technology does indeed work very nicely. I do wonder if it can handle moving off of cliffs or going into a freefall. I also wonder if this same system can also help me improve my system of sackbots being able to climb up walls and ceilings. (Currently, they can only climb up walls or ceilings of certain slopes.)

So you've played through the Command & Conquer series of games I presume? Have you also played Starcraft 1 or 2? I was considering suggesting recreating a Vulture hoverbike or Diamondback hovertank, though they aren't much different from the other vehicles that were proposed.

My hover system actually can handle a freefall very easily, especially since it can't fall at full speed unless it's unoccupied. It doesn't really fall anyways, it just keeps moving down (relative to itself) until it comes near a material. I've only played C&C, but i know of Starcraft, but i'll just build whatever looks cool. As for wall-climbing sackbots, my system actually can help, but i avoided climbing walls for my hoverbot, but i can easily modify it to do so.2011-03-16 04:47:00
