Fire & Ice

Archive: 11 posts

In Fire & Ice, you trek across a frozen tundra. The cold chills you to the bone and freezing solid is a major risk. In fact, were it not for the life-giving warmth of fire you surely would not survive.

The level started as an experiment in using the capabilities of LBP2. I remembered the original demo video of LBP in which sackboy had to contend not only with fire, but ice as well. While basic glass has long served as a harmless ice, I wanted to create genuine freezing. Using a player-controlled sackbot, I created two microchips, the Fire Chip and the Ice Chip. The Ice Chip is activated when the player comes in contact with an object sporting the Ice tag. Control of the sackbot is interrupted and a blue hologram cube surrounds the player. Provided he is not in continuous contact with the ice, it melts and control returns in 3 seconds. The Ice Chip has an inhibitory input as well, which is provided by the Fire Chip. The Fire Chip is similar to the Ice Chip except that it is triggered by Fire tags, which activate it for 2, 5, or 10 seconds. When active, the sackbot is set ablaze, giving him immunity both from death by burning and freezing. Though I didn't end up making much use of it in this level, the Fire Chip also has an inhibitory input, which is controlled by a water impact sensor. I plan to use this feature in a future versus level.

Initially I was just going to provide a quick demo of the functionality, but the level grew and grew until I decided to make a real platformer out of it. It's a bit hectic, though I do try to walk the player through the new behaviors found in the level. It's just that by the time I introduced everything I had lost my patience for building it and each feature was only used a small amount.

I'd like some specific feedback on how I can make it a more fun, coherent experience (or direct help if anyone is interested!). In addition, because there is no built-in support for a player seamlessly taking control of his avatar, I built some chips trying to make it as smooth as possible. Unfortunately I've stumbled across some bugs when playing with others. I'm not sure how to improve the auto-botting process, if anyone could point me to some information I would appreciate it. If I can improve a few things and clarify my design I'd like to eventually build coop and versus levels using these chips.

I am willing to do 5 F4F to start with. If you are interested in seeing more, send me a friend request and I'll join you and show you around the internals. Anyone who would like to get a copy of the chips, just send me a message.

Thanks!

Hey about to try this. I'll leave feed back. Will you do feedback for the level in my signature? It's a work in progress. I need to know if the gravity in the level feels right, or too stiff, stuff like that. Please and thanks. Gonna go play your level now.2011-02-12 20:47:00

Okay man I'm gonna sound rough. But this needs some rough criticism.

First off I stood at that beginning section for like three minutes wondering what to do. Then I figured out you could grab the ICE CYCLE. Why exactly can you grab ice if it's supposed to freeze you? Makes no sense, plus I mean, you can't hang off ice, or swing on it, it's slippery and it would break. And the way the ice and snow balls were just appearing in plain sight... Really? Magically appearing stuff? (I'll come back to this later.)

Now I'll just skip over the frozen lake scene.

Where you the createnator that fires the fire balls. Oh my gosh that had me so ****** off! I couldn't see anything! I thought you must be stupid covering up a section the player was playing again. I got so mad I restart I went to quit but accidentally restarted. Which saved you, because on my second playthrough the thin layer that was hiding that area disappeared when I went into it. Long story short: Check your logic that destroys that section. Something is wrong with it. And it ruins the level because you won't know how to get out.

Then I came to the section with the ice bricks next to the ledge. The first thing I thought was 'Bad design choice' because of you burn all the ice, you won't be able to get up to the legde. Then I noticed how you had the ice breaks consistently spawning above everything and I just thought to myself "WTH?" because quite frankly that is even a worse design choice, why? Let's just say I got crushed by magically appearing ice bricks on my way up. A more simple solution would be to put a bounce pad under all the ice, that way if they're stupid and burn all the ice, they can just use the bounce pad to get up. And they won't get crushed by magically falling ice in perfect squares.

Going to try and finish the rest of your level now.

Edit: Not much to say about the rest of it.

i have to say this kinda remindes me of other fire and ice levels maybe you should have searched to see if the name has been taken. Just from this post it reminds me of Morgana25 level, Fire & Ice (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=37554-Fire-amp-Ice). Anyway might have some time to check it out 2011-02-12 23:06:00

Thanks to folks for providing feedback. I think I've covered everyone who did F4F, if I missed you send me a message.

Taking the comments to heart, I've made a few changes to the level. Not all the changes people might like, but enough to make it a more enjoyable experience:
1. There are probably many levels called Fire & Ice, but I hadn't seen any that actually caught you on fire or froze you. I did decide to rename the level to "To Freeze & Melt" to be a little different.
2. I added a few arrows by the icicle to make it a little clearer for those who might forget they're in Little BIg Planet, where all sorts of things are grabable. I've left the snow balls the way they are... I like to think I can make an interesting level that is fun, but I don't kid myself in thinking that I can create the kind of polish some creators here have.
3. I made climbing the froze waterfall by the lake easier. I put backstops on the platforms and added two wooden bridges that, while you can't really just walk across, serve as nets in case you fall.
4. I angled the waterfall you jump down a bit more so that you'll always slide onto the ground and not get stuck.
5. I removed the emitters of ice blocks where you must make a set of stairs and put a bounce pad underneath so you can either make stairs or melt all the blocks.

I'd love to get some additional feedback from anyone willing to point out specific areas for improvement. I'm happy to provide a critique of your levels in exchange.

Thanks for playing!

I think yougota pretty interesting concept here, theres a few things i would change though, ike the speed of the fire spraying out of the creatinator, the lifetime of the fireballs down to .2 or something and increase the rate of fire, also make the ice disspeer right when the fire hits it, the area where you trapped right before the finish, the long straight narrow sticks could use some decorating cause it looks like most of the level looks decent and then you get to that and its right before the end so people will remember it, but i like the idea and using the icicle to get up at the begining was a cool idea, maybe add more of that kinda creative stuff and make sure people know how and what to do to finish your level. Hey! I really like the ideas behind this level. It's just a little rough at the moment. My main critisism was the use of different layers made it very confusing as to where I was and had to go. Along the same lines, the camera on the first platforming section (frozen lake) is too far away for such an intricate path. I really love the idea using fireballs to melt a path to proceed. I think they need to instantly melt/destroy though rather than bouncing off once as I killed myself a couple of times doing this.

I do like this very much, just needs some polish.

Wish you coulda heard me on the headset lol

Anyway like I said it's a great concept. I'd like to see it expanded upon. You got the yay from me but If your lookin for the negatives to improve here goes. The first part where u have to pop urself should be redone. The jumps are too cluttered and there's gotta be a way to unfreeze without killing yourself. Also the ice should melt faster. Fire felt to weak, but looks powerful. Also that spinning wheel was awkward to get in and out of. You got alot of great ideas ( I was gonna figure out that icicle eventually ! Lol) just gotta find a way to put em all together as the level felt short
