Hansel & Gretelbot

Archive: 149 posts

We are very proud to present to you the preview trailer for Hansel & Gretelbot, a very special community project based loosely on an old fairy tale, and that’s nearly ready for you to play!

Hansel & Gretelbot is the creation of 12 community members, names you may well recognise: Wexfordian, Comphermc, Morgana25, rtm223, Hilightnotes, xkappax, Catiers, GruntosUK, CENTURION24, Jaeyden, Cuzfeeshe and steve_big_guns.

A few months ago the Community Molecule set them a challenge - could they create a full game experience? Their own complete LBP Theme, using the new LBP2 tools to develop all original story, mini-games, bosses, cutscenes, music, and voices.

The team was gathered, designs were drawn up, themes were picked and building began, now several months later they are very nearly ready to launch their project for you to play!

Once upon a time, in a little cottage on the edge of the Dark Western woods, lived a humble Woodsman, his wife, their son Hansel and robotic daughter Gretelbot. One sad day, the Woodsman’s wife was taken ill, and passed away not too long afterwards. Time passed, but eventually the Woodsman became stricken by loneliness, and he remarried.

The Woodsman’s new wife was a wicked woman, who hated her new step children. They were the reason, so she said, that they had to live in such poverty. They would eat them out of house and home, the Woodsman must get rid of them! His will weakened by his heartbreak, the Woodsman relented, and led Hansel and Gretelbot into the Dark Western Woods, leaving them to fend for themselves, with no idea how to get home…

Hansel & Gretelbot should be out later this month, keep your eyes peeled for more info!

Media Molecule have announced an awesome looking community project called Hansel and Gretelbot! Read below for details, and don't forget to check the trailer and link out for more details:

A few months ago the Community Molecule set them a challenge - could they create a full game experience? Their own complete LBP Theme, using the new LBP2 tools to develop all original story, mini-games, bosses, cutscenes, music, and voices.

I'm expecting a 12-stage boss.

If there isn't one, I'm making one myself.

Not sure about 12 stages but it does fill 2 whole levels and was made by Jaeyden and comphermc... will that do?

Hey, I gotta question.

Is the music made for this from the sequencer in LBP2 or is is something totally new, like the music in the trailer?

All the music used throughout the levels was composed by Hilightnotes using the sequencer, specificly for that level, and will be given away as prizes. He even composed the music specifically for the trailer I made.

Just to clarify, although it's probably obvious - the trailer music was not made with the Music Sequencer haha. But yes, there is custom music throughout the levels I made using the Music Sequencer

Cool, if hilightnotes managed to make something behond electro/chip style, this is going to be even better!

I also like the fact that there's "only" 7 levels, it means it's going to be very high quality (compared to creating 15 levels with the same amount of time)

Just heard about this from Hilightnotes... very intriguing indeed! Looks great from what I can see in the trailer, and the score is amazing (looks like all that schooling and raw musical talent is paying off HLN's).

Can't wait to start going through all the levels folks! Too bad we can't add this to our Que until it's actually published... I'll have to keep checking back often to see when it releases.

Cheers!

Well, I suppose if we have to have favoritism, at least something good should come out of it.

This looks really, really cool. I just wish they would release this as a downloadable level instead of a community one. I hate the idea of not getting special items for what is essentially a Level Kit.

These guys have made something amazing, in a sort of grand experiment. I think the team have learned some things about game development, and today especially, as they get to experience what it's like to announce your game to the world after working on it in secret for so long!

You will really enjoy what they've made, and it won't be long until it's out, and hopefully it will inspire people to realise they can work together to make awesome things. Stay tuned!

Well I'd love to get together and do online create but until you fix the major loading screen bug and/or get some better servers that's impossible. Take a look at this video to see what my online create experience is like with just 1 other person!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=60VtDGL1LfY By the way, sorry the video is on it's side, it's the first time I've done one and I don't know how I did that. You can still see how bad it is though.

I'm sure those guys had a much better build to work with than we've got because if they'd had this one they'd never have got anything done!

They fixed the loading screen about 2 weeks ago. If you ever get it, let the person go into the level then leave and join again. That should fix it 100% of the time.
Unless you both have horrible internet.

Actually, we had the same exact build as the rest of the people in the beta. We even had to use the "online create" trick just like everyone else if we even wanted to show each other stuff.

Glad to see the cat is finally out of the bag! It's been hard to keep this a secret. I'm DYING for everyone to see the finished product - I've been able to see it, and each time I look at it I'm stunned by how great it is.

There's adreneline charged gameplay, great voice acting, cinematic moments that will make you laugh out loud, a great story line, beautiful graphics, and some of the best music I've heard composed into LittleBigPlanet 2..... PLUS, some of my own joystick-breaking gameplay....

Please don't down-rate my parts of the game.... I TRIED to make it kid-friendly.... I really did....

They had the exact same beta build as everyone else. This project shows what can be achieved with nothing more than talent, hard work, and dedication. They had to fight the same bugs and problems as everyone else, and yet they still came out with something amazing. Maybe if you spent less time complaining in irrelevant threads and more time creating you would yield better results?

Why attempt to put a downer on a project that has taken months of preparation and creating from devoted people? There's absolutely no need for it whatsoever. Take a step back and enjoy it for what it is, and that's a whole community built theme for everybody to have fun with.

No they haven't. It's just as bad as it was on day one. There hasn't been one single patch so far in the UK.

Have either of you even looked at the video I put up showing what my online experience is like right now? I guess not.

Yes, but what has it got to do with this thread in anyway? The only way it is even slightly related is you suggesting that these guys had a better build than everyone else, which they didn't. They had to fight the same bugs has everyone else. This is not the thread to be complaining about whatever problems you may be having, this thread is here to discuss the fine work that these awesome creators have been doing over the past few months.

They don't need to patch the game to tweak the servers, btw.

hopefully it will inspire people to realise they can work together to make awesome things.

You're the one perpetuating it, there was no need for you to get involved at all. Or have you changed your name to Spaff now you're a molecule?
Kindly stop messing up this thread and reply to me by PM or leave a visitor message if you've anything more to say. Thanks.

Yeah guys, leave the board clean for a nice cute project.
Communities, and most of all the one of LBP, a game that has SHARE amongst the 3 focal concepts, are meant to put people together, and not set them apart, so it would be nice that grudges are brought into pms

It is a bit late to try and take the moral high ground :&apos this thread is about this project, it was you who diverted the subject away from that and onto your own problems with the game. Not for the first time either.

If you had said 'Hey guys this looks awesome, it must have been a real struggle to get this together with online create being so troublesome, how'd you manage it?' That'd have been on the exact same subject but not in the negative, selfish tone that you did post it in.

I will happily take this to PM aand I apologise for derailing the thread slightly. As someone who knows about this project well, but not involved directly, I feel obliged to stick up for these guys knowing the amount of work that has gone into it.

It really is awesome from start to finish and you're all gonna love it!

Peace!

In terms of creating online, for the most part we didn't. We coordinated via email and forums (ConfusedCartman was kind enough to give us a private section of the site for this), IM and phone. We transferred files between us using email and dropbox (necessitated by the god glitch and all the annoyances that brought in the Beta). So yes, exactly what we did was to

work together to make awesome things.

There were no special builds or anything to help us get around the bugs other than willpower, determination and teamwork.

If anything the bugs were the least of our worries - with various members of the team being dragged off the project to work on other things, interferences of personal and work lives, some people have changed jobs, been working multiple jobs, moved home (2 of us even moved country during this project). It's been a crazy few months, but there was some unbelievable and commendable dedication and passion from people in the team (not so much me, I'm rubbish!) driving this forwards.

So yeah, don't expect anyone to be too sympathetic if you want to come to this thread posting off-topic irrelevancies and saying that it's too had to work together, because it's not super-convenient.

The issues with online play have nothing to do with this project and there are other places far more suited to bringing it up. Like the getsatisfaction topic (http://getsatisfaction.com/littlebigplanet/topics/who_else_is_frustrated_with_the_loading_screens_wh en_playing_online_with_friends). Please note the comment from Tom (though I think this has been moved from the lbp.me getsatisfaction to the LBP2 getsatisfaction, so it is indeed the correct place now, probably. That just highlights how long MM have been working on it, I guess).

Oh and Jack's not a molecule, btw, before that causes some confusion

Let me start... the Ccubbage part was too hard! Xkappax's voice work too shrill... and the 'idea' way too awesome!

Congrats guys! With Winter on the wane-- I can actually say I am as jealous as the day is long. Not bad for a bunch of scrubs... or is it schlumps? With no DLC here at the start of Lbp2... I've been waiting for anything new... This may do the trick, anticipating playing this inspite of all the ruckus about bupkis:hrmf:

This looks awesome! The Kindred of LBP2! Looking at some of the levels those creators have made by themselves, it's hard to even fathom what they could do together!

I think I'm going to be blown away by this.

*cough ARR PEE GEE*
*Cough LBP Journey*

I think we've figured it out.

You mean working as a team, simultaneous releases, serialization & original levels in LBP aren't a new thing? I thought everyone just made Mario lvls. Oh well, it's not like any of those other projects will be any good since just regular creators are working on it

Well, this topic makes me want to crawl into my hole again... for reasons I won't explain here ;-;

Still, congrats on making a decent game project thing... bout time great creators worked together to make a decent... game... project... thing. Ah well. Looks good.

Come on now, you know you'll make it too one day.

EDIT: This looks fantastic and I can't wait for it to finally be finished. Oh and my deepest apologies to CCubage for bothering him!

will you guys be posting this in the level showcase so that people can nitpick every aspect of it for no reason & complain that some parts were too hard?
I think you mean "constructive criticism". All levels can be improved.
Just because this is an official project, it won't stop me from posting critical feedback.
But can you guys even modify the levels?

I don't think anyone from around here will complain about the difficulty, if the levels are in fact too hard, I'm sure you find that out via level comments (or should I say "reviews"? ).

probably can't if it's been QA'd & handed off.

i'll be surprised if noone harps on a spot or 2. an MM pack, nobody would even think about it, but it's by our peers, so if we get stuck or run out of lives, it must be design flaw. ex: 'i can't get all 40 pandas' :/

constructive criticism & undue scrutiny phrased in a nice way are different. I just try not to expect more than the person is capable of, let alone expecting them to do something i can't do myself. Anything overtly subjective like aesthetic choice, plot, difficulty etc i keep to myself. i only impose face-to-face in create with friends, at their discretion, & at their comfort level.

i'm just gonna play these, rate 'em & move on. if i really like it i'll come in & hyperbole about it.

Ouch, that hurt a little bit...on the inside... I'm sure both will be fantastic, If I do say so myself

Hansel and Gretelbot will be spectacular, without a doubt. The team working on it is top-notch; but that isn't to say that lesser-known creators have any less talent than the more well-known creators.

i meant it in an entirely sarcastic way. internet sarcasm always fails. my point was exactly what you just said.

This post is for anyone who's reading this thread from the future.

See all the mean posts before this one? Don't post like that. It's not nice, and it distracts people from blindly showering the series with love and from being silently jealous of the collaborator's teamwork skills, talent, and social constructs. It's called derailing - and "derailing" as a word isn't friendly at all.

Friendly is the atmosphere that is encouraged by this website. Look at the level series that these guys are secreting from their saccharine glands! If you seek hate, go to an imageboard and post something they don't like - it's altogether a more efficient process, if y'ask me.

Of course, imageboards, emotions, and teamwork might not exist in the future, so if you're living in such a reality - dang, what terrible outer-space race conquered our society? Snap!

At least you folks still have the Internet. How lucky for you that the nice cosmic terrors provide you with such a broad, expansive resource!

The whole creators coming together thing reminds me of LBPC The Game (did I get the right name?) I heard of a while back, since that was a group of people from here coming together to make a level series wasn't it? The video looks really cool, whoever did the drawings is really good (if it was any of the creators). Did you guys put the video together too or was it just the level series itself? 2011-02-13 09:30:00

They did a brilliant job on it then. I was excited to play these levels just from the small previews of the levels shown in the trailer, but if they made the trailer itself too, I'm even more excited to see how good it will be!

Amen to the internet sarcasm thing, ninja. That's why I'm always putting or ^__^ or all over the place. People always think the things I say are serious. I think that's probably why so many fights happen on message boards.

Wow, what an awesome idea, bring some of the best LBP creators together to work on a multi level project, combining their different strengths to create something amazing!

It's like some sort of super hero team up where they combine powers to get stuff done... yeah, you know what I mean... I think. :o

But anyways, must have taken some real dedication and hard work by those involved, so, well done to all.

Should serve as an inspiration and show the very best of what's possible in LBP. Love the Hansel and Gretel theme too.

I gotta agree... not sure "best" is a good word (although I appreciate it ). But, this group is a great eclectic mix of art and creativity (Morgana25, xkappax, highlightnotes), specific gameplay and logic (rtm223, catiers, and myself), plus all-around visual, logic, gamplay, and graphics gurus (Wexfordian, GruntosUK, Centurion24, Jaeyden, SteveBigGuns, CompherMC).

I've never believed in a "best", but that different people have different talents and skillsets. Just when you think you're awesome, someone will come along and humble you with something incredible.

After working with this group for 6 months, I gotta say - there are no big egos here, no one who thinks they're "better" than anyone, and all of us would love to see the greater community get recognized for their fantastic creations. We just hope people enjoy playing the level set, and I hope it becomes a launching board for MM to let more creators be involved in these kinds of projects.

after seeing your art work, i think you're alot better than you give yourself credit for, and just need to get down to business in create again sometime. if this doesn't cement you as a lynchpin of LBP history, nothing will. like i saids about dimo in his spotlight... if you don't know kappa, you don't know LBP. THAT's the thing everyone calls favoritism... it's not, it's just people who've been grinding since day 1, and have touched nearly every facet of LBP's community & creator lifestyle in every way. Some of them never stopped, ever, for 2 years straight and are so on point with their skillset that it's silly & downright delusional to hate them. It's like Cheers.

Well NinjaMicWZ, to be fair i never heard of any of you guys before i joined LBPC last year.
i used to be from another LBP forum, that will be left unnamed. and sorry you only know
about most of the people from here only after you join. unless you just end up playing with
them by chance, like you play with a friend who has them as a friend. happens a lot really.
only reason I've known about even who xkappax was before i came here was because by chance
i saw her animation Vid on youtube on MM's website. everyone else from here? nope.
not till after i joined. that's just how it works. like i know no one from LBL. or LBPG. Etc.

xD. but this level set does sound fun. happy it's fantasy. i dislike sci-fi....
nice to see lot o creators work on something together.
tho only 7 levels? seems like a lot of people working on a project for only so little.
but I'll wait to see first before judging. *mew

i may need my own group of creators before long. i been planing something pretty epic.
but i have to get more far along before i know if i need other's help

I'll keep a eye on this. Yohoho~ hope it gives me more then 5 hours of game-play. :3

Oh my, I didn't think people would take it so seriously and start that argument for calling them the best.
Its a complement, seriously people, this is THEIR level series and THEIR thread in a way, I'm not gonna enter and say "This is good, but this and that person could've done better" or enter and say "these other people should've done it instead," I'd just be rude/ mean. (Not saying the ones who did it did it for so, I'm saying it would've been rude of me.)

To MY opinion, they're the best.
I'm not gonna come here ranting about who's better and who's worse, I'm gonna rant to support them for the hard work and awesome levels they've done.
So don't take my commentaries as a declaration of war against other good creators, I know there are many other great creators, but for me, this is the best group of creators, and the best fit for the job.

in the interview it talked about character designs and costumes.
as a artist who loves making character designs & being an expert costume maker.
I'm very interested in this part of the project. in what way did you go about things?
where did your idea come from when it came to costumes? did you think up designs
while playing with LBP costumes and deco etc? or did you design the character first then turn it in to
a costume? I've done a lot of ways of doing things my self. but it's interesting to see how other artists work. *mew

I drew out a bunch of concepts on paper first. We had no idea what to expect as far as costumes went. Here is my original art for the costumes:

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y84/haleybrooks/Hansel%20and%20Gretelbot/lbp028.png

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y84/haleybrooks/Hansel%20and%20Gretelbot/hgretelbot1.jpg

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y84/haleybrooks/Hansel%20and%20Gretelbot/costuming.jpg

I used these sketches as a baseline for the characters.

After we got into the beta, I sat down and tried to translate these into the costumes we were given. Some changed a lot, some changed very little at all. After I finished, Morgana25 sat down together and worked out a few extra details with the costumes, and that was that.

And to those who didn't, no worries! I already had to cut like 2000 words to make it more blog friendly.

So basically, my forgettfulness and randomly screwwy internet connection was actually a positive thing... Right? I'll keep telling myself that I think.

Thanks for putting together the article mate

I figured you would read the previous replies in the e-mails to be honest.

Thanks again to all those who took time to answer the questions.

This looks promising. You guys are really passionate about LBP. Can't wait to try this out!

Although, I wish you guys would have made a public sign up or something. I would've loved to make some music for this.

Hope you guys have another one of these projects

Are there create materials (actual new materials) offered as prizes - and new decorations? Like the MGS levels, etc.?

I know it says new "prizes" - but didn't know if those were simply created objects (which don't do me much good since I don't use other creators objects in my levels).

Just wondering - plan on getting this either way when it's released.

Hate to burst the bubble you had going, mate, but these will be published just like any other community level. It's not official DLC.

It's not a dlc pack, so no new materials. It will include some items made by the creators of the levels, music from Hightlightnotes, at least one sticker I put in (not sure about the other levels) and the costumes from the story characters for playing the levels.

EDIT: sniped!

I just saw the picture of the sackboy swinging through the swamp, over the frogs..

I don't mean to go all biological but, aren't green types of frogs native to woodland type places?
And aren't brown frogs native to swampy places? o_O

I don't know if that's true or not but I remember reading that green frogs = trees = woods/forests and brown = certain types of woods + wetlands.

Not that it matters, since you should probably use green frogs anyway since green looks better for a bright/happy kinda kid story like hansel and gretel. lol

And i'm pretty sure you weren't thinking about what kind of frog species is native to where xD
I just thought it was weird since i live in a swamp and have never seen green frogs, only brown.

Looks good anyway

Reading the interviews now.

After reading that interview and seeing those storyboards, I really can't wait to play this!
How was it doing the storyboards and character designs for the game, kappa? That must have been really fun, I wish I had your job.

It was really great. I think you're probably a lot like me, Zim... I draw all the time. Whenever I'm not working, I've got a pencil in my hand and am doing a comic or sketches or animation or SOMETHING. Storyboarding and stuff like that comes naturally to me because of the comic and my animations. So, yeah, it was a lot of fun. That part of the project was not even like work.

Anyway, if there were ever another officially sponsored mm project like this, I'd recommend you in a heartbeat for the concept art, Zim.

Wait a moment...when you leave the controller untouched in LBP2, it will begin to play a silent video.

In the video, you see things like a fantasy tower and what appears to be Hansel and Gretelbot. Is the footage I saw from this series?

Far guess...just wondering, if it's not this series, then who's levels are those anyways? They look really good for the glimpse I catch of them.

Yes it's them, i noticed them also, plus the levels in the video you saw
that looked like the Hansel & Gretelbot ones was not in the Beta. so give it a guess *mew
