Thank you, [INSERT NAME], for volunteering for the Human Aptitude Testing Experiment! Use all of your skills to advance through the test chambers. Unfortunately for you, we are all out of cake...

Although this may be considered as cheating, I am such a nice guy to offer you security photos. It's not like they will help you much anyway as no test subject has yet to reach chamber 8.

So good luck, [INSERT NAME]! I welcome your feeble attempt to escape your inevitable death. I brings me such joy...if I could feel such a thing.

Played it and loved it. Took me a few tries to beat which is great, I always welcome a challenge. You should make room 10 impossibly hard I like the diversity between each room, and it definitely feels like I'm playing Portal: LittleBIGPlanet. Awesome job, I can't wait to see the finished version.2008-11-20 02:26:00

By the way, do you think people are smart enough to get to the switch in Room #3? Do you think most people know to push X when you hit the spring to reach it?

This level looks like a real [puzzling] treat. This is on my "Levels to Play" list once I get LBPPuzzling treat, indeed. It is actually platforming and puzzles as it is a test of mind and body. Even still, I will be sure to put in some good puzzle test chambers.

Room 5 is nightmarish X_X It took me so many tries. When I finally beat that room I only had 1 life left, so I guess I got lucky. Acing the level would be some task, especially if the later rooms are even harder.

I dunno about 3. I've played a lot of platformers, so I just kind of know to jump off of springs to go higher. Really though, there aren't many other places to go, so I'm sure they would figure it out eventually. It is a puzzle level after all.

Edit: Woo, aced the level.

UPDATE

- Finished Room #6 and republished.
- Added a video onto the main post.

If anyone has better video and sound quality, I would be very thankful if you could upload a video since my sound is always out of sync. If so, just tape up to Room #4.

I had trouble in Room 6 with the box puzzle and all the levers.
When the box was destroyed, a new one did not replace it so I was stuck. Unless it's meant to be that way.

Regardless, I really love this level. I like the premise, the trial aspect of it, your own posts about the level done in character-- it's all appealing. Was there only one secret item so far? That was ingeniously placed. It was something I was thinking about doing whenever I learn how to build a level.

Good work! Left comment, too.

UPDATE

- Fixed the box emitter in Room 6 to spout a box when it is destroyed.
- Added a guide to tell players to push the X button when landing on a spring to go higher.
- Added another prize (The box or cube or whatever you want to call it)

Thanks for all the kind words. BTW, what did you think of the puzzle in Room 6? I've never seen a level that encourages putting stickers to remember what does what to solve a puzzle before so I was pretty proud of it.

Oh, cool. Glad I could help out!

Yes, I think that puzzle is ingenious. I can't imagine how much trial and error was involved in creating it. I know it's difficult to do complicated puzzles in RPG Maker 2003, so I can sympathize regardless.

I think you should let players figure out holding X when jumping off a spring. 1) It's something that is easily learned by playing through story mode, and 2) You haven't been holding the player's hand for most of the level, so why start now?

Great work though, Volitare. I hearted your level so I could see future progress easily.

UPDATE

- Finished Room #8.
- Added fancy locks to the doors just for looks.
- Added security cameras.
- Added tubey things for the cubes.
- Added a sound effect on cube switches.
- Added two more prize bubbles.

Thanks to the people who have played and critiqued. I have to say it is getting harder and harder to outdo myself every level and I still have 2 more to go lol.

If at all possible, give me feedback on what you hated (Heh, hated, get it?) or what you think is missing from the level.

Testing it out right now, I'll get back to you on the feedback.

One word... WOW.

Ok, actually more words coming your way. First of all, GUESS WHO IS RANKED #1 AS OF RIGHT NOW!? THAT'S RIGHT, YOUR LOOKING AT A MAMMAL THAT CAN DO PUZZLES, YESSIRY.

Anyways, the level was incredibely fun, I have never had fun on a level as much before, I'm serious, the only frustrating part was the little stage 6, but the incredible thing was, I wanted to beat this level, so I didn't get frustrated it was just one of those things that's like " Omg this is almost impossible, but I'm doing it because this level is so incredibely awesome" Yeah... Something like that, as of the rising difficulty, it was perfect, it was so balanced I never had to re-do the entire level, I just died a lot. Lol, I didn't like Stage 5 though, in a good way of course xD

So overall 10/10 Can't wait to see the last stage, ( I really liked Stage 9, and to be honest I think you made it a little too easy, I didn't die once on it, maybe that's why I liked it so much? I don't know it's your level you decide. But good job!

I don't know it's your level you decide. But good job!Keep in mind that after I am done, I am putting a race timer on the entire level for massive points. I also want this level to be a speed run level. So it seems you will have to redo once I am finished, Whaaaaale. Awww, too bad.

Room #6 is actually easier than you think. Just pay attention to what the guide says when you enter. "You can use stickers to store information that can help you on puzzles like this one". Now what stickers would you put on the blocks to remember what color switch does what?

Yeah, Room #9 is pretty easy, but I didn't mind. If you want, I could leave the electric blocks inside the spinning circles after you pull the lever to make it really hard to get out lol. I also don't want people to die that late in the level since they would be less likely to play it again to get back to where they were and try again. I will try to make Room #10 pretty hard and long as I have lots of thermometer space left.

Can anyone think of a good ending? (Besides Portal's where you destroy the computer and escape)

And is your name from Kung Pow: Enter the Fist?

EDIT: Beat your score. Mwahaha.

Yeah, that's exactly what I said LOL... But Voltaire, I see what your saying with Stage 9, I would keep it like that, but hmm, a final level eh? I really don't see one, either an incredibely hard stage, and since people think its like portal, they might think the computer will try to kill em, but u suprise em by making the computer actually turn out nice at the end and let u leave, woo hoo, or you can think of something dark and cruel. Your level, you choose.2008-11-30 23:37:00

Gracias.

I actually think I will go for the Portal ending. I just can't think of anything better than that. The only problem will be thermometer space as I have finished Room #10 and it took a pretty big chunk. I might be able to get it done though...

- Re scripted some of the dialog.
- Added a start and finish line.
- Room #10 is the prize for acing the level. But good luck trying to do that lol.

I timed myself going through the level and it takes around 17 minutes to finish. Holy CRAP.

Anyway, GO PLAY IT. IT IS SUPER SPECIAL AWESOME.

I've watched part of the youtube video as I didn't want to be spoiled on all the rooms, this level looks great! I love the visual style that you've put in, it evokes the same feelings as Portal and Mirror's Edge. This is at the top of my list of levels to play.2008-12-03 22:59:00

Alright, just played it, here's my thoughts:

Pros

Long level. Took me probably a half hour to finish, though most of it was spent in the final room.

Somewhat of a story with it, and it kind of makes you feel guilty at the end. Kind of.

Visual style works well

Both puzzles and platforming

Cameras are a nice touch

The difficulty is a really nice balance.(up until the last room)

The sound is really nice.

Last room feels a lot like the Bunker

Cons

Last room feels a lot like the Bunker.

Prizes aren't very well hidden.

No multi-player challenges

Room 8(or is it 9) is quite repetitive. It'd be great if each individual spinning thing had a different design to it.

That last room was a bugger. I had aced it up to there. As a matter of fact, I aced it til the third ring. Then I died 12 times. Thank goodness I thought to reuse old checkpoints. But overall great level.

Was the end supposed to feel like a boss?(part after room 10) It sure didn't to me.

The ending isn't a boss. Test Chamber #10 is the boss lol. The ending is just closure. Something to give the players some closure about this insane computer. Oh yeah, and you felt bad for the computer? lol When I was writing it, I wrote it as he would say anything to stay "alive", including pleading and pretending to be your friend. Of course, the interpretation is up to you.

BTW, nice job on almost acing it. I almost did too, but I died once in Test Chamber #7, I believe. It is possible, but it requires some skills.

* stands up and applauds * Bravo, my friend, bravo. This is one of the top 10 levels I have played in LBP. The design is flawless. Yes it is challenging but not frustrating (except the last room, get to that in a bit) and there is a real sense of achievement once you have cleared the final room. Back when this was still in the demo phase it was only done up to room 6. I already loved the level then and I love everything you have done since. The color selection, sound effects, speech bubbles, details like the cameras and silhouette of scientists, and pacing are executed to perfection. The music is something I enjoyed best. The drum track playing throughout gives a sense of urgency and tension. Then there is the requisite boss music which is always great and then another track kicks in after that which really refelcts what the player has done and the end of the journey. Just perfect.

Now the last room REALLY ****** me off lol. After finally making it to the red switch I though it would be over and when the message came up to proceed to the next ring I did not see where it was and headed back the way I came only to find out it was right below the red switch! Maybe a cutscene focusing in on the white switch in relation to the position of the red switch would help or it could just be that only I had a problem with this. I was going for the top score and I WOULD HAVE HAD IT if not for this small problem. As it stands, I am in the top 3

One more important thing. Certain parts of the big ring kept flickering between red paint, white paint and dissolve and I am guessing that is not intentional. Don't know whether this can be fixed but it really is just a minor distraction.

The ending is just closure. Something to give the players some closure about this insane computer.

Yes if this was a book the ring would be the climax and the part that follows the denouement. I personally really enjoyed it and would not change a thing.

I agree with most of what Bass Deluxe said so I will not write more here. There are always ways to make a level better but I think you are as close to perfection as possible. Creator hearted, level hearted, 5 stars! If you are reading this then please stop and go play this RIGHT NOW! What a great week it has been for levels from these forums. Thank you Voltiare and I look forward to the next one.

It can't be fixed. It really makes me mad but it happens whenever you need to sticker something big.

I'm adding some pros I forgot to mention, including the sound and the difficulty balance.

Awesome level, the design is nice and clean, and the puzzles make you think, without feeling absolutely impossible. I died a lot, but every time I did, I didn't feel like it was the level's fault, I knew it was something that I did myself, which is what made it so much fun to play over again to finish

Fabulous work.

Hey, played through it with you yesterday, it was really awesome. I don't remember the chamber number at the moment, it was the one you used paint to complete the puzzle. Anyway that part was awesome, my brother's wouldn't stay focussed but they do that on every level. Would you want me to switch the colors of the rings since the player is trained to think Red = Finished? As for the score, try again. I want people to fight over the 1st place spot.

Yeah, the sticker flickering is annoying, but I couldn't fix it.

Having more than one person on Test Chamber #5 with the spinning circles is almost IMPOSSIBLE...especially with the lag. And then trying to keep everyone together was tough too.

Yeah, Chamber #10 is pretty epic if I must say. Hard as nails and satisfying as all get out.

First place, and that gap is only going to get bigger. =P BTW, excellent stage. It's well designed and isn't made for weak sauce.

Also, in room 10 you might want to add a little more material around the life points as you can consistently fall into electricity when respawning with no way of grabbing anything.

WOW, I played this level this morning and I thought it was great. I wasn't able to beat it yet. I got stuck at the first jet pack part and could not figure out where to go after I had thrown all of the switches. I'm looking forward to playing it again, and you have been hearted and befriended MR Voltiare, I look forward to your future creations.

I also played your other level Temple of the sun and moon, that level was great, I love the artistry you put into the cave, the lighting was really nice, and it was very cool to have multiple endings.

I'd like to see them try.

I aced it too, btw. =PLOL. Yeah, all the other scores were before I added in the race timer I believe. Could you just lower the bar just a bit? You know, let somebody else have a chance? lol

I also played your other level Temple of the sun and moon, that level was great, I love the artistry you put into the cave, the lighting was really nice, and it was very cool to have multiple endings.Protip:

1. Go to where the door was.
2. Disconnect jetpack.
3. PROFIT!?

Thanks. I put a lot of love into both of the levels. TOSAM was a good first level IMO.

I agree. They need to think of a better system.

Anyway; I played your level Voltiare, and it's awesome. I also commented in LBP and, ofcourse, hearted it.

Your other level is great too (I can't remember the exact title, but I had to bring down the sun and the moon)!

UPDATE

- Tweaked the camera cutscenes in Test Chamber #10 just a bit.
- Added more grabbable material around a checkpoint in Test Chamber #10.
- I managed to snag the #1 score from donkeyshow. Now, he will be forced to play it again. Mwahahaha.

Thanks for the hearts everyone. It's already about to beat TOSAM and it has propelled me into the 30s for creator hearts.

I haven't got past chamber 7 yet, because I've been spending most of my LBP time making my level, but I will be sure to try it again the next time I'm at my PS3.

Incredible level,

The puzzle where you need to keep track of the colored switches is the most clever use for stickers (during play) I've seen
I still haven't been able to get through level 10 but I'll keep trying ;-)

Yeah, that might be the room I am most proud of. The way I came up with it was kind've by accident. In my mind, I wanted to have a room full of switches and the puzzle was to find the right switch, but I couldn't think of a way to do it without it being insanely easy or impossibly hard. So I just colored different switches and then the idea of lowering a cube dawned on me. At first I was thinking of keeping the colors on the blocks, but then I thought it was too easy. Then I had the eureka moment of encouraging the player to sticker them.

Well, I am proud of #10 too because it took me a while to think of how to switch the rotation on whim. If you pay attention, the rotation switches after pulling each switch, but only one thing can connect to a motor. It took a bit of out-of-the-box thinking.

I have an emitter for each switch. The first switch emits a box of dissolvable material with a key for the switch (Set to direction). The second switch emits a stone block which crushes the box before it. The third switch emits another box with a key.

Forgot to add that this is what I call FPM: FRONT PAGE MATERIAL.
Heh, that actually was nibbling on me. I was thinking "Where is my FPM approval?"

Anyways, thanks for the kind words.

The same goes for you. You've always been a supporter of me. You and OCK. You know what? I am going to play your level tonight. I've been a bad friend by neglecting it.

I've been working on this for a while. I was on Chamber #8 or so when TOSAM was spotlighted.

Cool level. A few things...

On room #4, the platforms that raise leave holes beneath them. Anyone that falls in there will have to suicide back to the checkpoint.

On room #8, if a cube is left under the rightmost platform (the one that only moves if you stand on the button), it is crushed. I don't know if the first cube in the room respawns or not. If it doesn't, the player will be forced to restart the level as he/she needs two cubes for the blue platform. ...Did I even make sense?

My major complain: no cake. I was hungry. D:

We also played the temple of the sun and moon, but got stuck trying to bring the moon statue down... how do you get it past the electrified blocks?

UPDATE

- Put a little electricity underneath the pistons in Chamber #4.
- Added an emitter with switch in Chamber #8 to prevent people from breaking the cube and having no way to progress further.
- Finally fixed a magic mouth. It was doing the all asterisks thing. Guess what the word was? "ENTERING". WTF?

I think it is close to perfect now. Now if only the sticker flickering glitch wasn't there...

BTW, I just got a joke review by a member of the LittleBigWorship forums. He's awesome and here it is:

"H.A.T.E. (Human Aptitude Testing Experiment) by Voltaire

Have you ever seen that thing online where they flash numbers at you and you have to remember which order they go in, than when your done doing that (and you probably sucked at it) they showed you that a monkey was better at it than you. This is that. H.A.T.E Human Aptitude Testing Experiment which for people who dont undersand what that acronym means it means that the person came up with the word HATE and thought backwards. (If you are still trying to figure out what a Aptitude testing experiment is its just three different ways to say test) Anyway starting my search i learned that their is just way to much hate in LBP whats up with that guys, but than again its kinda my job so what am i saying this level is perfect for me. lets begin

Gameplay. 10 chambers with ten tests. think Chamber of despair, just with a white backdrop instead, and with more tests. The computer offers you a challenge and anybody who can tell the difference between red and white can figure this one out. Yet for some reason i still think a monkey could probably show you a thing or two in this "experiment" If you really are having a hard time with this one its not that its challenging, its that you're challenged. Nothing incredible here with obsticles. you pull levers and jump on platforms. in the middle of the level you get to play breakout. the old atari classic. which fits the enviroment perfectly being that there was more color in that one small portion than their was in the entire level. If you ever wanted to know what those test monkeys felt like well your not going to be able to being that at least the get a marshmellow at the end or something. you just feel like its time for you to go back into your cage, maybe its because you didnt do so well on your test (shoulda copied off of the monkey next to you....) its a good thing im prepared and i dont want to see the apes win this war. the answers are Purple, Yellow, White, Purple, Brown, Green, Black, Brown, Yellow, Purple, Green....fight the power :smileywink:

Originality: Being that i have only done a few reviews so far and i can already compare this level to another level that i reviewed that should show you how many are probably out there just like this one. The creator probably thought that by removing any theme whatsoever and replacing it with simple colors could hide the fact that its just another level with the same situation...kinda like world of colour.... This time its not a temple its a Lab. It goes to show you that people really are doomed when all it takes its pretty bright colors to draw them in.

Music: this was one of the lucky times where i got to hear more than one song. that was kinda fun, it does make you wonder if the scientists were willing to give you music dont you think they could have given you something better to look at like white walls....im pretty sure they trick the mice into going through the maze we just have to do it because...well....because the computer said so. so any of the extra points i would have given you for music im taking away because the enviroment was so bland.

As for your commentors on your level, it is a sad sad example of how the world is going to end up like planet of the apes. they are better at taking the human test test test or H.T.T.T than we are.....****** dirty apes.....

Gameplay: 1 out of the 20,000 second you get for finishing this level instead of a marshmellow

Originality: 1 out of the 15 times i was in a different chamber asking myself, "didnt i just do this?"

Music: 1 out of the 4 possible choices of music that you could have used

Overall: 1 out of the 264 known species of monkies you're going to have to kiss *** to once they take over the world. "

Finally, in the news, H.A.T.E. has over 100 hearts! Thanks to everyone who made it possible.

I just finished and I have to say that this level is magnificent. Truly epic... The use of color coding, the platforming... every single mechanic is just mind bogglingly complex and is polished to perfection. Everything works so seamlessly and feels flawless. The challenge is immense but perfect and rewarding. The dialogue and premise in general is so entertaining and unique. My god, the last few rooms that aren't in your video are unreal.

I honestly feel that this level is better than any of the story levels by the developers and that's saying alot... even better than Collector's Lair and The Dancer's Court.

As per every level review I'm doing since...um, today I guess, I will give this newly found stage the full course of rant.

So, from the most obvious standpoint, it's a tribute/ripoff/testament to Portal, one of the greatest First Person Puzzle games ever made, and since Portal had some incredibly ingenious puzzles that fully took advantage of what could be done in the game, it would only be fitting that a (good) tribute to the game would adequately feature this function.

To put it simply, Voltaire could not have possibly done better, which coming from me (the super cynic) is a shock. Honestly, I can't think of anything bad I want to say about this level, it is that ****ing good. Yeah, the puzzles later on get to be as hard to bite into as leftover gristle, but it's challenging and fun and keeps you coming back even after failing once or twice, and that's the way puzzle platformers are meant to be, challenging not frustrating.

I haven't had this much fun with puzzle platforming since I played Klonoa: Door to Phantomile (PS1) and because that's the best platforming game (series) ever made in my eyes (other than LBP at this point), any level that can give me that level of enjoyment is a winner by all means.

So, here stands H.A.T.E., Portal couldn't be more proud of it's long lost twin brother.

Final Score:
10 / 10
Absolutely sublime from start to finish, and currently the only level other than maybe The Azure Palace that has tickled my "Klonoa" bone once again. Voltaire, I salute you good sir.

I have to say, this level can only be described as epic.

It's very challenging, and yet very satisfying. I couldn't manage to beat the clock but I was still very proud to finish the spinning wheel of death (even took a picture!). The final ring had me on the edge of my seat!

That's pretty cool... I think this lev's going to be in circulation for a long time, man. I just finished playing through it again awhile ago. I show it someone at least once a week, along with Sackboy's Inferno 2.

It's great on 2 players, even though you can cheat (I just don't let them know) but if you're playing with idiots on 4 player it's soooo annoying to die. lol we were down to our last life and the guy just runs and jumps into the electric wheel on the final room and ignores the grab material completely. Don't even get me started on trying to explain the color coded switch puzzle to them - "WAIT GODDAMMIT WAIT JESUS CHRIST"

Fun level, although I got stuck on room 7 or so - 4 switches you have to activate by jetpack. I activated all 4 switches but then couldn't find how you advanced to the next stage.

Very nice platformer, great use of basic mechanics, one of my favourite parts of LBP. I have to say the sticker-color switch (where the box drops through layers you have to move in an out with the switches you color yourself) was the most inspired use of stickers to actuate a problem I have seen. Maybe the only use of stickers in a really effective way I've seen. Brilliant thought there.
