They're killing the Spyro I know and love. I mean loved the Spyro trilogy of PS1 and loved the last Legend of Spyro because of the art style but why must this happen. I'd rather have a pint-sized dragon that kicks butt than the full-grown one in those pictures.

But in my opinion...It might be a good game, and it might not, I'm just gonna wait for more information and maybe some gameplay and stuff before making a single assumption. The thing is, it could end up being a good game, but it's just not Spyro.

New video game Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure, based on the character from the original PlayStation days, is due this fall. And the publisher of the far-more-adult Call of Duty is targeting ages 6 to 12 with a line of action figures starring more than 30 characters from the game. When the game is running, players can put an action figure on a plastic "portal" or stand and watch the toys appear on their TV, and the toy becomes a moving character in the game for the player to control.

"These are toys with brains," says Eric Hirshberg, CEO of Activision Publishing, which unveils the game and toys today in New York for next week's annual Toy Fair. The combination brings together "the imagination that toys have always unleashed with kids, and the imaginary world of a video game."

To help create the world of Skyland where Spyro and fellow characters live, Activision has enlisted Hollywood talent, including Shrek character designer Tom Hester, screenwriters Alec Sokolow and Joel Cohen (Toy Story) and composer Hans Zimmer (Inception).

"It's got a whole universe of characters and an incredible backstory and a number of different ways to interact with it," Hirshberg says. "Usually franchises take years to develop the kind of universe that we will have Day 1."

Taking a page out of Nintendo's Pok?mon playbook, Skylanders endows Spyro and each of the other 31 characters with different abilities and powers (Spyro's include fire breath and horn charge). Pricing for individual toys has not been set, but a $70 starter pack will include the video game, three toys, portal and trading cards. Activision plans to release the game for multiple systems as well as computers, handhelds and phones.

Once a character's toy is put on the portal and enters the game, as a player collects gold or levels-up his character or upgrades a weapon, that character's improved abilities are saved in the toy's memory. Players can take their toy to a friend's house and, when the character is transported into that game, all of its attributes are available.

Children's Technology Review editor Warren Buckleitner expects to see several examples of augmented reality coming to the toy market. But makers must be careful in assimilating technology, he says. "Many times it can distract or water down the experience," Buckleitner says. "It's really an art form."

With Skylanders, Activision hopes to build on the appeal of Spyro, who has sold about 20 million games since his original release in 1998.

"We definitely wanted to take Spyro to next level," Hirshberg says. "But when you see the lineup of toys together, you will understand this has gone way beyond Spyro. This has become an ensemble cast."

My hope on Crash and Spyro died long ago. But after seeing all this (and a little more i saw on it today, http://www.joystiq.com/2011/02/11/skylanders-spyros-adventure/) Its like they dug up and violated the corpse. I don't even want to know what they have in store for Crash


Activision has the stupidest marketing technique "Lets get them to buy various peripheral (sp?) expensive crap thats got to be used for the game!" Theres so much potential i can see for some of their franchises that could do wonders with the "Play Create Share" technique (Tony Hawk, no seriously if they did this but for their park and character customization it would do very well)		2011-02-11 18:13:00

Well...Judging by the screenshots, it doesn't look TOO bad, I guess...But WOW Spyro is a lot uglier than I thought he'd be. But hey, at least that design indicates he might have his old personality back!

The thing is...regardless it does look like they wanna give it an original feel..Sometime ago this same thing was happening with donkey Kong, until now they Made donkey kong country returns and heck id say there on good track so far, I dont like spyros new look, but if he is getting his old personality back, a differen voice actor (PLEASE), the level design and everything look similar to the classic and the music might be similar then I look foward to this. I just hope they change Spyros look


AND I really really really more than anything hope they change the control back to what they were, instead of making it feel like some hack and slash game I hated that...does anyone know if how the game plays will be changed? Insomniac made Spyro awesome, just like they did with games such as Ratchet & Clank. Because of this topic I went and downloaded the original Spyro on to my PS3 and I am now filled with a nerdy nostalgic joy that is making this one of the best weekends I've had in a long time.2011-02-12 22:04:00

So now, not only is Activision destroying the Spyro franchise through what doesn't even look to be a Spyro game, they are going to use this toy scheme to milk this new "franchise" (It's not Spyro guys, see the full game title), mainly riding off the fact that one of over 30 characters (excuse me?) is actually a recognizable name... I wasn't keen on Spyro's design in TLOS series, but this new design is just terrible. Has anyone watched the trailer for this yet, because if you think this was bad, wait until you see that. It even has AC/DC playing, which just doesn't seem to fit for a game that is aimed at 6-12 year olds.

I, myself love every single Spyro game.
The ones made by Insomanic were great, but ? Software has advanced, so should the games. My opinion completely.
The ones made by Activision, in my opinion were amazing. Apart from Spark?s voice changing all the time, they were great. I love stories, and I do hope they decide to make another Trilogy ? because the last one they made was amazing, great concept.

This game, in my opinion is great. Apart from the way they?ve made Spyro. I do hope this game has a story with it ? and then carries on where you can play with other characters.

One thing I like is how you can use the Portal to make the Toys go into the game ? Let?s hope they decide to make more games like this.

I, Myself am a collector. I love games, old to new. My favourite type of games are Fantasy and Adventure games. Spyro hit the nail with that one. Been my favourite game ever since it came out.

One of the things which does disappoint me is there is only one Dragon Character ? that could change. It is coming out in Fall, so, what they have as Spyro now, could change to something far greater.
I hope they make many different dragons with different abilities ? Such as a Air Dragon, Fire Dragon, ?Purple Dragon? (AKA Spyro) which can master all the elements. and others. I also hope they can make this so you can design the characters you would like online, and then purchase them online ? This could bring them LOTS of money ? and if you don't like the Spyro they have now, you could possibly create your own (if they allow the feature that is!)

With blogs like this, it is to express opinions towards games and new technology. Everyone is basing it on how Spyro looks ? why not look at everything other than Spyro, then Spyro. Add tips which they could do to improve this.

As it is coming out in fall, I myself will be sitting here waiting day in day out for it to come out and to hear updates on it.
I sadly cannot reach the Demo Days they have, as I?m in England myself, which has rather upset me. So, if they do another Demo day ? I really hope they decide to do it in Portsmouth in England So I can go try it out!

Other than that, and the nagging, and lecturing and all my opinions in this. I?d like to say:
This game will be a blast ? Cannot wait to play and see what is in store over the next coming of months!

Besides Spyro's appearance and the 30 random characters the game looked relatively good. There was a Spyro site once where you could make your own dragon, but I forget what game that site was made for. I know it was an official site though. As PainfulTears said, why couldn't they have just done it with dragons instead of 30 random characters that don't resemble anything that has been in Spyro before?

There was a statement on Wikipedia though that isn't on there today (but was there yesterday) stating this was the last Spyro game, and was the start of a launch of a new game franchise. Anyone besides me feel like they're going to use Spyro to boost this new franchise sort of how Raving Rabbids became recognised through Rayman?		2011-02-13 12:55:00

It is sad, but the only thing I do hope is that unlike Rayman, using Spyro for only one game means it doesn't have people not realising who Spyro is any more because the franchise they're actually trying to promote overshadows him. By the second Raving Rabbids game I had seen people asking who Rayman was, because it wasn't obvious who he was any more, especially as they made him dress as a Rabbid. I'd rather see only one game using Spyro as a booster, than the franchise needing it for a couple of games and as a result ruining his memorability entirely.		2011-02-13 13:51:00

Agreed again.
If they decide to make a second game named Skylanders: Spyro the 2nd, or something. I hope they write in the guide you get with it the history of Spyro.
I also wouldn't mind waiting for a game which allows us to see the History of Spyro, or just as a mini-game on this game for you to venture round old levels and clips to see what Spyro was about to promote the old games for it.

As I wrote on their website (Their being activision):

I wouldn't mind there being the Spyro there is currently (which they've made currently) and one that looks like the old, and the new Spyro. That would just be amence. 3 Different Spyro Characters.
The old one being able to do only Charging and Fire Breath
The new one (From the Legend Series) being able to master elements.
And the one they've made already to master skills to do with Fire, and Charging.

Once this is released, I would get it all... being the gaming addict I am. IDC how much it costs, it looks completely amazing.

I'm a person of many Ideas... so, here is my main Idea.
On Zazzle (http://www.zazzle.co.uk/) you can create items of clothing, and items for yourself - from coffee mugs to computer mats.
What I'm trying to say is: Make this so we can make characters by doing this!!! I would LOVE to be able to create a some animals with up to 5 abilities and buy them from around $7 to $15 on the internet. Or maybe even higher. It would be amazing. This would ship in ALOT of money for Activision, and I'm sure if people can't get the Original Spyro design into this game, they will want to create their own Spyro based Character.
We should also be able to save our designs. So we can buy the product more than once so we can give the character to our friends and such.

I am a 16 year old, even though their aiming at this game to be for 7 to 12 (was it?) I will still buy it.
I hope this becomes into a range of gaming, and they make more games for the Skylanders, where we can take our characters into it.

I have a question about this too:
How much roughly will it be? And will we get to choose the 3 characters which come with the package. If not, please include Spyro in there, cannot have the Skylander: Spyro's adventure without having Spyro

Will we be able to deleted the saved data from the toys? Just like you can with Memory Cards from PS2? And will we be able to copy the data onto other ones?

Will we be able to put more than 1 character on the portal at a time? So lets say Spyro and Stealth Elf. Will me and a friend be able to go into world with these 2?

Will there be a set of Skylander games with different things? Such as Dungeons, where we have to travel down them, collect things, etc. etc?

You could make a range of different aged games with the Skylanders.

Though I find the Spyro model to look atrocious, I find the actual gameplay to be pretty good looking. Its a fighter-type game, and Im into those. The characters look refreshing, thought it wouldve been nice to get some genuine Spyro characters. The actual game overall doesnt look Spyro-y enough, though. Im considering this game.

Hopefully this is some kind of promotion to Skylanders by using Spyro temporarily in a game. If Skylanders was an actual game minus Spyro, I would be happier. So right now, Spyro is just a 'booster'.

the designs looked nice. but this coming game is junk. but it don't sound like a full Spyro game.

Just watched the trailer (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_zhr9CntRIE), I did enjoy some of the other character designs.
Why they used ACDC, I have no idea. What a waste of money. It's obviously aimed at kids (because of the toy tie in) and the song choice should reflect that.

It's Skylanders: Spyro's adventure.
So it is obvious they will make sequels. Such as - Skylanders: Crash's Adventure.

Or anything along the lines. Skyalnders: Spyro's adventure must be the first of their series. Maybe a sequel to the Spyro version may be released, I haven't a clue. But, all I've heard is this being a Skylanders game, not a Spyro's game.

My god, please let Insomniac take the wheel someday. It's sad to see so many childhood memories completely destroyed by such a horrid rendering of a classic gaming masterpiece. Unfortunately, as much as I would love to see Insomniac do one more game just for old time sakes, they have already stated themselves that it won't happen. They only have a small fraction of the original team that worked on Spyro and along with that they do not own the rights to it and probably wouldn't want to do another one anyway seeing that they want to focus on their current franchises. But hell, I would love to see them make a Spyro mini-game or something like that on the PSN. Insomniac really is a gifted gaming studio and I'm glad their main studio is only a short drive away from where I live. Off-Topic: Going by what I've seen of whats been happening over the past decade, I've composed this data.

Company makes game franchise. Game is good.
Company stops making game franchise, different company picks up dropped franchise. Game is not as good.

Off-Topic: Going by what I've seen of whats been happening over the past decade, I've composed this data.

Company makes game franchise. Game is good.
Company stops making game franchise, different company picks up dropped franchise. Game is not as good.
Game gets dropped again, yet another company nabs it. Game is bad... etc.

I never said anytime soon, I was just making an example. I like to try and stay optimistic about most things, but I've lost about all hope for the game industry. NaughtyDog has dropped Jak for Uncharted, Nintendo sold Rare to Micro$oft way back, and their pretty much going down the drain, the Wii is just dying off slowly. Yes, exactly. I already know he was sold before those games were even made, no need to state that again (plus that wasn't even the point of my post). But Insomniac still made them, so perhaps I should have phrased it differently...What I meant was, they dropped Spyro, or stopped developing Spyro, because they ran out of ideas but still wanted the series to live on.		2011-02-19 08:51:00

Yeah it's the phrasing that's off although to be fair it has been the default phrasing for Spyro and Crash for nearly a decade.

Maybe things would have been different if they had the resources to support working on several games at once like they do now but on the bright side it's always good to know that a developer can recgonise the limitations of something and walk away rather than try shoving in an idea that doesn't really fit.		2011-02-19 15:37:00

Also, I hope Spyro doesn't have his ridiculous melee moves that he had in TLOS series, since on the official site for this game Spyro's pose of him clawing at the screen gives that impression. You can't go back in time and make the same game with other levels. Same goes for Spyro. But the point here is that this reboot isn't good. It looks terrible. Super Mario Galaxy isn't.		2011-02-23 19:02:00

In my opinion, just my opinion here - They need to get the old Spyro fans, and the new to get on board with their idea.
I, being me actually didn't mind the first 3 games, but the ones made my Sierra are the ones I've liked the most out of the series (definitely dawn of the dragon) but everyone has different opinions.

If Insom ran out of ideas, they could've asked the Fans on the internet what they'd want to see - by making a page and publicly posting it around on sites like this.
I am rather unhappy Sierra let Spyro down, they could've made it so, there was a trilogy and then adding on a extra one. With the cutscenes altogether, that makes a film. So in the long run the film probably wouldn't of been that bad, maybe they're still making the film - but not announcing it at the moment.

About Skylanders Spyro looking like a Mutated gremlin, that could change... I think he looks rather cute (in its own little way) but, his look may change. Remember, times move on... they could improve his skin a little, and make him look a little more realistic... but that's just my thoughts on it.

But, what would you all rather - No Spyro games ever in the future, or a chance that he may go back to his original self, or somewhere along the lines...?
I think most Spyro fans would want him to live on, and a chance to see if he goes back to his original self.

I don't see why people say Skylanders will be 'crap' or 'rubbish', on every site I've been on, that's the gossip - the way Spyro looks. Not the game, but the look of Spyro.

What I have wished they had done with Skylanders - Spyro's ADventure was to stick a few other Dragons in there, maybe stick Cynder and the Elders in their too, so we have something to play with. And a brand new story line with dragons.

I think Skylanders will be a brand within itself, having Spyro's adventure the first adventure in the series. There could be a game such as: Skylanders: Crash's Adventure, or maybe a brand new character which will open a new variety of games.

I'm sure, if any of the Spyro fan's got asked to think of some Story lines for Spyro, they will be able too. The best thing to do if you don't like something, forget it. They won't change it for a group of people who dislike the game due to a design of one of the 32 characters in the game.

... I seem to be rambling a lot now. So I think I'll end my post here.

A few days late to this party but here are my thoughts.

The idea of scanning toys to put in the game is good. I actually like this. I also Like that Spyro is still purple.

Things I don't like:
New style - Who'd buy a toy of that thing?!
Milking a franchise for all it's worth - The 'legend of' series was actually good in it's own merit but never lived up to Insomniac's efforts
Activision - I don't care what other successful games you've done. Pokemon style gameplay will never be topped.
30 characters - Nowhere near enough for this sort of game
Toys - Only if they are expensive, which by the sounds of this $70 starter pack, they are.
Change - I am a classic Spyro fan. I was kind of hoping that what Moneybags says in 'Year of the Dragon' would hold. Something along the lines of: "Not paying? What are you waiting for? Another sequel?"


Insomniac stopped Spyro because they realised they had shot themselves in the foot by making him walk on all 4 legs. He couldn't really hold anything. This is why they sort of experimented with other gameplay through other characters in 'Year of the Dragon'. Agent 9 proved popular, Insomniac created Ratchet & Clank. They saw that they had reached the limits with Spyro. Plus I think they got a big offer and needed money.

After some more research it seems that Skylanders may be the actual game series and Spyro is just a character. So I'm hopeful (But doubtful) that this is just a poorly designed cameo appearance.
What they should have done is hyped up the kids about the toys and then have a Spyro one as a pre-order special. The gameplay doesn't look too bad, but the main thing 'Legend of' was missing was the collecting. Obviously you collect toys here but in-game seems pretty much a bog standard platformer.		2011-02-27 01:16:00

Considering how Spyro looks I wouldn't want to see other once decent icons of gaming turned into something horrid. Crash would probably end up looking like he got a bad case of fleas if they do to him what they've done to Spyro. But, since there is a Crash Bandicoot game coming out this year, it seems unlikely that one will be related to this, and so that probably means it will be something different. Seems unlikely they'd make a new Crash game just to throw him into this franchise at a later date. Considering Crash and Spyro have had a cross over game before, if Crash was to ever be part of this wouldn't it help to put him into this same one, rather than doing two separate ones? The idea of separate ones sounds like some sort of Pokemon game, where you need both versions to get all the characters and that sort of stuff.

As far as I know, that's not true. There was one to come out last year that was to take the franchise back to its roots, but Activision lay off Radical and cancelled the game. His future for now is uncertain.


Anyway, I'm looking forward to the game for its own little merits. Spyro's design doesn't faze me, Gill Grunt and Zap look interesting, and Bash is just too adorable!		2011-08-07 01:50:00
