Little Big Retro Arcade 2 - is back and better than ever

Archive: 7 posts

Hey Guys,

I've not posted on here before so first off hello. If you were on the beta you might remember my level (little big retro arcade). Well I've been working on a sequel. It's taken me quite a long time to do as I've added a meta game and am trying to make the games support 2 players if possible. The meta game consists of finding 6 secret coins (more to be added as I add games) for doing various things (kind of like in game trophies... actually I'll probably rename them to that). And I've added quite a complex system whereby you have to spend points to play (kind of like a real arcade ). There are still some big bugs in it but I'm fairly pleased with what I've got so far, so please feel free to check it out. As a little treat for the LBPC users here's the clues to the secret coins (I keep meaning to put these in game but keep putting it off):

1. ??? hidden
2. ??? hidden
3. Tank killer - Destroy 15 tanks in one credit
4. Clocked! - Destroy the mothership
5. I really DO love LBRA2! - Sticker challenge
6. Patience is a virtue - Spend a minute playing pong

enjoy!... here's the lbp.me link... http://lbp.me/v/x92qw0

Sounds like fun, I'll check it out

If you fancy giving my levels a go (hopefully Director's Cut) then please do so. Posting in their threads wouldn't hurt either

thanks guys... i've been sitting at work hitting F5 on my lbp.me looking at stats... i was getting about a play every hour or two, up to 30 plays.. then suddenly splaff_molecule plays it, hearts it and it gets mm picked. literally a minute later it's sitting on 100+ plays. it's about half an hour since then and it's up to 650+

was wondering if this is the right place for some advice... on the pong game i have "AI" controlling the second paddle, however i can't figure out how to get the controlinator to take over. the paddle is on a piston (with strength set to 0) and then there's a follower that moves the paddle, however when the contolinator is active i turn off the follower. the trouble is i can't move the paddle because the piston is set to 0 strength. any ideas appreciated... i suppose i could force the strength to 50% and have the follower be much more active?

just played this, and then came on here and saw the thread, i liked it alot, reminds me of the old atari days lol.

just a thought tho, the pong game seems impossible to beat playing ingle player lol but here is my review.

Intro:
The intro is very very well layed out, and is really retro and simple which gives it a more arcade feel, the simple colour scheme and the animation sets it off.

Sound:
Sound is perfect, again taking it back to the old days, i dont think you could have gotten it more right.

Design:
The design is ALMOST flawless, prehapps tho it would be nice to see some more machines lingering in the background to give the player a thought that there maybe more to come, also i think if you darken it up just a tad, it gives it a more of an arcade feel. thats just my opinion, your layout is spot on, i think just a few tweaks may set of the arcade mood more.

Overall:

My overall review is a yay and a heart, bought me back to childhood, and i will deffo play it again
thanks for the great game.

cool. thanks for taking the time to post that review. i plan on adding more games. "race ace" is next. Also the pong game is pretty broken at the moment, no 2 player at the moment and i need to randomise the ball pattern slightly. I'm going to add a quit button for all the games, that should (if i've set it up properly) rest the games correctly in case of faliure.

as far as the visuals go i hadn't seen the cool arcade background till i was quite far through this, so the feeling was supposed to be a bit more like being at home in the 80s and playing console versions of old arcade games. I've done the living room, so next up we'll be going through into the kid's bedroom with stuff like homework, toys and sports equipment lying about, and a more kid friendly set of furniture.

planned games (though these could change) are:
- twin stick shooter/rescue mission
- top down racing
- missile command
- mr driller type affair
- a kind of avoidance game where you are a fly and have to evade birds
- might do a breakout clone as it's pretty much already set up with pong

if anyone is good at chip tune type music, i could really do with some more tunes

Played the level and left a small review. Pong needs a little tweaking with the A.I. and the ball getting stuck sometimes, but other than that it is a pretty good level.2011-02-11 17:48:00
