Faking gravity

Archive: 5 posts

I'm planning to make a level based on the very old game "Space War", does anyone remember that? I think it was one of the very first video games ever made. Basically it had a planet or star in the middle of the screen which was a gravity source. Then you had two player controlled ships which could thrust, rotate, and fire bullets. You would orbit the star trying to shoot your opponent, which could be quite tricky as the bullets were affected by gravity too! I think some versions also had a moon orbiting the gravity source as an extra hazard. It was a great fun game which I want to recreate and improve on in LBP2, but I don't know if it would be possible....

How would I go about faking the gravity of the planet and making it act on all the objects in the game, and become stronger the closer you get to the planet?

Not to burst your bubble, but someone did a game very similar to this in the Beta. It was cool, and I encourage you to run with it. I believe they used a combination of followers and look-at rotators to achieve the effect.2011-02-10 14:37:00

Yeah.. as a matter of fact it was Aya and has one in LBP2 now.

...but please do go ahead and work on your own!! It isn't being first, it is having fun creating what you want!!

Yeah, I actually would have been surprised if this hadn't been tried already, i'm just happy it's possible! I'm gonna run with it and I will do a few things to try and make mine stand out from the crowd Now back to the technical stuff... since I'm quite new to LBP2, I haven't even used followers or look at things before.. how would i use these to fake gravity?2011-02-10 15:02:00

I do, but I didn't have one in the beta - I was too scared of losing my work to make anything particularly substantial.

I originally tried using a Follower, but it seems that it interferes with the conservation of momentum - ditto for Advanced Movers. Only the Basic Mover seems to work, so I used it in conjunction with a Look At Rotator which points to the star, and used a Strength Scale input based on the relative distance to the star.

It's not quite right, as you end up with gravitational force being a linear function of distance - I had planned to make it more realistic, but it's pretty complicated and it works well enough as-is.
