Guitar Hero, DJ Hero & Tony Hawks cancelled maybe just for this year maybe longer or permanantly.
True Crime sequel dropped too.

"Due to continued declines in the music genre, the company will disband Activision Publishing's Guitar Hero business unit and discontinue development on its Guitar Hero game for 2011," explained a statement from the publisher.

"Despite a remarkable 92 rating on DJ Hero 2, a well-regarded Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock, as well as a 90-plus release from our most direct competitor, demand for peripheral based music games declined at a dramatic pace," Hirshberg stated.

"Given the considerable licensing and manufacturing costs associated with this genre, we simply can't make these games profitably based on current markets and demand."

"Even our most optimistic internal projections show that continued investment was not going to lead to a title at, or near, the top of the competitive open world genre," he said.

"In an industry where only the best games in each category are flourishing, to be blunt, it just wasn't going to be good enough."

Laying out the publisher's plans for the year ahead, Tippl stated, "We will release no new music or skateboarding games" during the current calendar year."

It was announced with Activisions Q4 results.

As for Rock Band they havn't announced anything yet but they are now independant.

In late December, Viacom announced that it had sold Harmonix to Harmonix-SBE Holdings LLC, an affiliate of investment firm Columbus Nova, LLC; the terms of the sale were undisclosed, though estimated at $200 million.[27] This sale to shareholders of Harmonix, backed by the investment firm, returned Harmonix to an independent developer. The resulting sale will not affect current and future support plans for Harmonix' games; the sales includes the intellectual property rights for Rock Band and Dance Central, letting Harmonix Music Systems to continue to develop these series.

A good move in my opinion! These games were moving into obscenity.2011-02-10 11:39:00

Well, Guitar Hero lost the plot after Guitar Hero 2; incidentally this was when Activision took over the title;

The original creators of Guitar Hero then went on to make Rock Band - which is a much better title (IMO) - and has a much better/wider selection of music.

But dwindling sales serves Activision right for churning out yearly cloned "updates" .

All of their titles deserve to sink in the same way.

I remember when Activision was a lame little publisher back in the 80s...and the World was a better place.2011-02-10 12:03:00

Probably they will work in these games instead: Call of Duty, Call of Duty and Call of Duty. And maybe CoD.2011-02-10 15:25:00

Well they did just make a new studio for something COD related

Beachhead will create a best-in-class online community, exclusive content and a suite of services for our Call of Duty fans to supercharge the online gaming experience like never before.

By "Supercharge" they mean they will be charging a "super" amount for the content

I've boycotted Activision now anyway... they no longer get any of my gaming hours until they fire Bobby Kotick and change their ways.

I don't care if they release the best game ever... I'd sooner keep my soul

Rock Band has become far superior anyway. The last really awesome Guitar Hero game was the third one. The fourth one was "meh". Guitar Hero games just got spammed too much with not enough work going into them.2011-02-10 16:36:00

I'm not boycotting them I just havn't bought anthing they've published since I got Bloody Roar Primal Fury on Gamecube from the bargain bin many years ago. They just havn't been putting out stuff that I want to buy (prototype did get some serious consideration though) and this year doesn't look any different http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2011-02-10-new-spider-man-family-guy-due-2011

Hopefully this will inspire some people to pick up a real guitar, instead of playing that game.

It's always blown my mind how people spend ?100+ on Guitar Hero, when you can get a perfectly decent guitar for that price.

"Listen to that video crowd, kid. Haven't heard a video crowd like that in years."

I was wondering when the bubble would finally burst. I have a bunch of the Guitar Hero/Rock Band games, and the differences between them all are barely discernible. Which makes you wonder why they bothered releasing them all in the first place? Ohh yeah, to milk consumers like cash cows.

Rock Band 3's attempt to get people to learn the basics of "real" instruments was admirable, but ultimately flawed. If people were interested in learning real instruments, they wouldn't resort to playing Rock Band in the first place.

Question, how many Tony Hawk games were released? Answer... TOO MANY!!! Yes, Activision drove that series into the ground by releasing a new game every year. Instead of allowing time for new ideas and innovation to work it's way into the series, instead they choose to roll one out every year ensuring consumer fatigue.

Personally I will jump for joy when the COD series finally crashes and burns, if ever there was a series that was the embodiment of the "Emperors New Clothes" (the game mechanics of COD haven't changed all that much since the first Wolfenstein), it's COD. It's games like COD that destroy innovation in the games industry.

Definitely. I'm waiting until March to get the guitar controller that doubles as a real electric guitar, but I love being able to learn the real keyboard, drum, and guitar parts to those songs.
