Rumble Tool
Archive: 5 posts
It just hit me today. I was thinking about features in video games that LBP2 can't replicate (which isn't a lot, believe me), when I started thinking about how MM is going to introduce the PSMove. That got me thinking about what other hardware the game could use, and thought.... what about controller rumble? It's used many times in videogames to add another layer of feedback to the gameplay. Two name ideas I had were either the Rumble Tool or simply the Rumbler. Here's how I envision it: Properties Intensity (0% - 100%) - This would determine how much rumble the controller has. It should probably enable less than the maximum rumble of the controller itself, to prevent creators from misusing it. Output (Constant/Pulse) - If set to Constant, the tool would release a constant output until it was turned off; if set to pulse, the tool would send a short pulse each time it was activated, which would also enable the next option: Pulse Duration (1s - 3s) - sets the length of the pulse. This would be useful in creating feedback for, say, different types of weapons or impacts. In addition, you could have a Global Setting to disable the current naturally occuring rumble (I think there's some form of that or another). It's a fairly simple concept; I'm surprised I didn't think of it sooner! Thoughts? Suggestions? | 2011-02-09 16:29:00 Author: EliminatorZigma Posts: 173 |
Having something that could trigger rumble would be great. It would be useful for say a cinematic where a big monster is approaching. Instead of forcing a dangerous material near Sackboy, it would be easier if you had impact sensors on the monsters feet. When you activate them, they send a rumble to your controller. Just a thought I had. | 2011-02-09 16:38:00 Author: maddoggnick96 Posts: 272 |
No, MM already said they can't. Well, they can but they wont. It's going to suck the battery from the controller fast, thats why. | 2011-02-09 16:59:00 Author: Jonaolst Posts: 935 |
Actually, IIRC it's somethng to do with Sony's requirements on how the rumble can be used, specifically durations that it can be active for etc. There are ways to technically limit that, but I think there are licensing issues and getting it past Sony's QA is too difficult. Or something. | 2011-02-09 17:46:00 Author: rtm223 Posts: 6497 |
Yeah, if they were to implement this, they'd obviously have quite a bit of restrictions on it. As long as it could be used as efficiently as in other games, it shouldn't be too much of a problem. | 2011-02-09 18:01:00 Author: EliminatorZigma Posts: 173 |
