How? - Holographic Material

Archive: 7 posts

Hi guys,
I've seen a few questions about Holographic Material, but none of the answers seem to help me.
I want to know how to actually USE the Holographic. As in, creating space invader type games, Heath Bars, all that kind of thing. I've tried putting stickers on and putting a dark material (Basic Rubber) behind it. And I just can't work out how to use it.

Any Help?

Thanks in Advance,

Holo can't be 'animated'.

You can emulate animation though. Holo 'can' be stacked upon itself within the same layer. It can be off or on (via a signal input, plug something into it) It can be any number of different colours. It can also have a brightness value while off and have a different colour than when its on. It can also take in analogue signal when set to 'fade'.

Basic 8 bit style animation would probably require single small grid sized square pieces of holo arranged in a matrix formation within inputs from a logic network instructing which pieces to be off or on. This can be done a number of ways, either have sensors with ranges set to the same radius as a single small grid with objects behind the holo (could also be invisible holo) with a chip on them with basic movers/rotators/e.t.c. that when moving passed the grid matrix triggers the holo squares into an on state.

That sort of thing. I've not done it myself, but that seems like the most logical answer to me. Hope it helped

EDIT: when i say i've not done it myself, i mean 8 bit animation. I am actually in the process of making a top down twin stick shooter 'entirely' out of holo. Its incredibly powerful material when used in combination with certain logic components.

If you ffancy it i could jump into a crator with you n give you the low down on what i know.

It can be used for all sorts of things. It's especially useful for holding microchips and lots of logic because it floats where you put it, like dark matter, as long as you don't attach tools like pistons/winches, etc to it. If you turn the brightness down to zero it will be invisible in play mode too.2011-02-09 16:36:00

If say you want a health bar to move with an object you've made (Could be a car/plane/Enemy etc..) just get a square of hologram that is turned down to 0% light, that makes it invisible, then stick it to the object, then take the health bar and stick wherever on that piece of hologram ( I advise that the health bar is hologram too). This can be used for anything you want to follow an object2011-02-09 17:18:00

You can even tweak it so when you get hit/push a button/gain health the holo lights up from 0% brightness to whatever you want.

If holo is on 0% brightness it is invisible in play mode but not create. Holo, as said, can go into anything and you can make some nice swirly animations with it in one layer if used correctly.

The health thing is set so it turns to 0% brightness when off/health is lost.

I can't type much right now but I hope that answers some questions you have.

Thanks everyone for your help. I'll try it out, and tell you what I find.
And yeah, I'll add you, Epicurean Dream later today.

Once again, Thanks guys.

Also in my recent level I tried to use holo as a substitute for dark matter when I tried to mount a horizontal piston.

Don't do what I did. Don't use holo as dark matter.

The piston will flop like an unstiff one even if it is stiff.

That's just a tip.
