MicroChip-In Challenge Golf

Archive: 33 posts

Hey Guys.....Here is my level.....Its a physics heavy golf mini game on a single screen for 1 to 4 players...

http://ic.lbp.me/img/ft/b8c4d10ccd074aec70ed41ae3ce7cc0a7d716c14.jpg

New Title screen with options to play Versus or Co-op (single player scoring)

http://i6.lbp.me/img/ft/9b61f360b64e740f176f0ffa1dd60912475bac61.jpg

Its fast paced and very rewarding with a high degree of skill involved...

http://if.lbp.me/img/ft/5fff691a53941a1f2041ec20ee9a55170f6b0892.jpg

It also has a day/night cycle.....well......one day/one night (visual aid timer!!) You have till sundown to see how many balls you can chip in...

http://id.lbp.me/img/ft/dad4ab05787c8145ca24d45d69c069f26c7ffb05.jpg

...Oh...and its also got some super sparkly light trails coming of the balls......oh yes.....

http://i4.lbp.me/img/ft/f746762c15e0e661bc638da2838ce0fd78a5a968.jpg

Anyway...hope you enjoy it...and anyone playing it and commenting with constructive criticism and/or adulation can certainly expect their own level to receive the same courtesy in return....

Thanks again...

Okay...well this is a little bit of a shameless bump, but I'm also here seeking a little guidance.

I'm wondering about the merits of changing this to a co-op game rather than versus as people are not getting any scores....do you think thats the way to go? Maybe if it became popular then change in back to versus?

Any advice is gratefully received.....

I played it this morning, I'm actually the guy who suggested that change in the review heh. Anyways to explain more clearly, this level doesn't necessarily need more than one person to play it (ie the level isn't about shooting each other). If it were not a 'vs.' level, a winner would still be announced at the end, the only difference is single players wouldn't be discouraged from playing it, as they don't get a rank if they're solo in vs.

I really liked the level, I thought it was good fun trying to hit the ball just right. That's just the one thing that stuck out to me.

Yes, thanks for playing today, you gave me some food for thought as well....While I like the layout in a Versus game (clear score definition) I don't like the fact people don't score if playing alone (which, to be frank, is almost certainly the case at the mo)

I'm thinking of having it co-operative for now, and then if it becomes more popular with more traffic, changing it back....what do you think? Also,is there anyway of distinguishing who is playing with who? (Is the primary player the ONLY player who registers the play?)

Anyway thanks again for your constructive feedback!

EDIT: Have queued your level and will cast my beady eye over it later....;-)

Yeah, the downside of co-op is that people who play it at the same time, while they are scored competitively within their own game at the end, will show their total scores combined on the leaderboards. This isn't necessarily a bad thing though, I think for this kind of level it's more fun to compete with the people in your immediate 'team', and work together to be the best team on the scoreboard maybe?

Really there's pros and cons for each method on a level like this, and it's up to you to figure out what style you think would best suit it. Either way you've got a fun level though

Hey, I've already played and left feedback, which I got your response on my profile. I just wanted to add another thing, I just couldn't get that top left hole to save my life, only got it once in a couple plays. Maybe make it worth more points? Or maybe I just need more practice and it's easy once you get the hang of it.

Also, about the scoring. That's a problem I'm facing with Mini Golf. I would like each player to be scored individually on the leaderboards and have a chance for the top. However, as Dietomaha has already said, single players don't get posted and we can't see the scores anyway. If I change it, to have a chance to get near the top players will need a good 3 or 4 player team. Guess we're in the same boat on that one.

Ah....Just the person!

As someone who has made a super popular level, have you ever thought of changing it over in the beginning (Versus to Co-op) or did it take off straight away? I'd love to know the nuances of giving your level the best chance for success...

As for that first hole, I've made it so every player can hit every hole from every position, it just takes practice (or in my case...exhaustive playtesting....if I EVER hear that music again..grrr) But having said all that, because trying to get the scoring system working correctly (I've had to fudge it with emitters and score bubbles) it has made it a little bit more difficult to give the holes points according to their difficulty....but it is something I'm planning to implement in the future!

As for your level, have you thought about duplicating it as a Co-Op?....or would that dilute the plays?....'Tis a conundrum...;-)

'Tis a conundrum...;-)

Indeed. I honestly still don't know how to handle the scoring I've only seen one review that requested I switch it.

As for how it became successful, I can't explain it other than luck. I hadn't published anything before and I was pretty much a nobody who just enjoyed LBP. Put my heart and soul into getting all the logic to work (The player turn manager, hole manager, and circuits for each ball are pretty much a mess and too complex to straighten out) and published it just to see how it would go. Posted it here and not one response. Less than a day later it's at the top of trending, busiest, and cool, and it's only 2 days old, now. I was blown away. Can't really offer any suggestions as it just kinda took off on it's own.

I imagine that, after so many people have played your level, there is a certain weight of expectation on any adjustments/follow ups. I know how daunting it is to go into your own level and fiddle with things when you've built logic on logic on logic. All of a sudden you feel like you're playing with a house of cards and any changes could mess everything up.....Frustrating!

As far as being successful, I'm sure there is a measure of luck involved, but you're also probably being a little modest, after all, MM has supposedly designed the game so the really great levels get to the top of the food chain.

EDIT@ Arastoph......Queued it matey!..

I have queued this level and will play it and review it shortly. When I review it, I'm sorry to say I won't be able to post the review on here, but I will do so on your level in game.
Apologies for this, but I'm rather busy at the moment, so i queue levels, play and review them in game.

In return, please try and review my level.

Much appreciated.

@ Racing creed...Loved your Bounce pad level and was honoured at being shown a sneak pic at your up and coming follow up.....Looks fab!

@Aristoph Left a comment on your level, again, I'm in awe of the creativity shown by the community....Another diamond that deserves to be at the very top of the cool pages!

@Dietomha....Again...Played your level and found it to be a solid collection of lbp tried and trusted gameplay mechanics with a liberal dashing of great humour...Well done sir! (comments also online!)

Had a whale of a time playing our levels tonight! Here's you review:

Ok so after we had a play together my husband and I went back to try it out a few more times so I could really get to grips with it.

Looks

The day/night cycle is a really nice touch, adding some drama to an otherwise simple scene. The little sparkly trails (ooooh pretty!) behind the balls are really useful to help you see where they're going. There's not much to say on this really, it's a simple set up and I like it that way. It's a driving range, what more could you need?

Playability

My husband and I went back for seconds. That should indicate how addictive your level actually is. It comes down to two simple facts: It's competitive, and it's simple. Whack a ball, get it in, score some points. It took me a few moments to figure out how to differ the angle and speed of the ball (I take it that the putting relies o nthe right stick sensitivity, which is lovely - really varies the strategy!) but I managed to figure it out by myself easily enough.

I'd agree with previous comments that it would be lovely to see some more varied scoring, but I see you already have that planned. (The hole at the back in particular would be much ore worth going for if it scored higher.)

There were one or two occassions where a ball got stuck at the top of a hole, but I understand that you can't go making them bigger as this would ruin the challenge of the play. I really can't say I noticed any glitches as such, so you can't go wrong.

Overall

Awesome level, nice simple ideas tend to make the most playable levels, at least when they're executed well. That's what you've done here.

Many thanks for a fun night, see you round in game x

(I know you've already posted in it but my F4F is here (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=48444-Little-Big-Robot-Wars-Versus). Just in case it's bogged down lol)

https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=46354-Trouble-Within-%28Part-One%29
many thanks!

Now for your review.

Overall this level is absolutley superb! The gameplay itself is very addictive and due to the sporadic nature of the shots it is challenging and fun to try and get them on target which i find very fun!
The use of the sunset/night sky transition provides movement, flow and beauty to the scenery which of course has to remain static for the level to work. I played this on my own but i can tell it would be even more fun with a few other players as i was being competitive against the timer!
The only thing i would change is perhaps adding a limited arc for the swing of the arm so it doesnt look like the golfer has no joints in his shoulders! (how does he manage to windmill his arms like that!?) or maybe a power gauge to the swing to make it more accurate and make it easier to slightly tweak the power of the shot in some way. All in all a beautiful level with wonderful gameplay.
A+

Hey neat little mini game. Liked how it changed from day to night, the music was amusing, everything looked fine, though (this was probably because of my tv) the edges of the people WERE cut off a little bit.

I didn't at first understand the controls, but then I noticed my guy was swingin' his club and I understood it.

This may just stem from me not paying attention to the scores but do all the holes give you the same score? Because if not I don't think that's fair. While the holes are semi balanced, I do not believe they are balanced enough to warrant separate scores. Correct me if I'm wrong?

And I think you should (Unless you are saving space on your earth) go ahead and publish two modes, a competitive one, and a co op one, that way everyone is happy!

Will you play the level in my signature? It's a work in progress, but it's coming along nicely. I need feedback on the gravity. Whether it feels nice, or if it's too stiff and what not. Please and thank you.

I was finally able to play this as a multiplayer game rather than by myself and just as I suspected, it was even more fun! I think my sister enjoyed it as well. Soon as I loaded it up to show her she said "Wait I want to play, too. This looks fun!"2011-02-13 04:55:00

Yes they do, although there has been a surge of people asking me to change it.

And I think you should (Unless you are saving space on your earth) go ahead and publish two modes, a competitive one, and a co op one, that way everyone is happy!

I thought about this, I asked Halestorm whether he'd considered it, as he has made the super popular Mini Golf (http://lbp.me/v/xjj6n1) but I never did as I wondered if it would dilute the plays. Perhaps someone who has done this can tell us more?

Will you play the level in my signature?

Done!

I played it.

I loved it, I thought it was never too hard to putt the ball which isn't a bad thing because I suck at golf. The visual aids were nice and although I played 1 Player I'm sure it'd be an epic multiplayer level.

If we still rated by :star:s, it'd be :star::star::star::star::star: and I <3ed anyway.

Did you use any of my advice?

It's just a shame that mini-golf challenge in Mm Picks came ou at around the same time. It kinda overshadowed your level...

In the one on Mm Picks, I realised I am quite good at flukes.

I forgot about this!

All your advice was good advice Mr Peas and any I haven't used has been took on board and will be used in anything I do in future....

Incidentally, I've made an update to this which I'll be releasing soon (for anybody thats interested!) Some slight aesthetic changes and I've also added a bonus system to the scoring to make it a little more focused and competetive....

Oh....and I must say a big thank you to Shinogi for helping me immeasurably with the logic/mechanics of the new scoring.....So Thanks Shinogi! (Look out for your credit!)

Noticed your update last night Gaz, and took another playthrough. I can definately see improvements being made in regards to logic and so on. The improvements to the scoring system are good - nice that the target changes every once in a while for a little variety!

I still have a blast with this game. My husband keeps asking if we're going to play any more put put golf tonight!

Thanks Rialrees! I think the more you deal with the logic, the better you get at it. I never thought I'd get to the level of understanding I have now and yet there is SO much more to learn!

Talking of which, I've also republished this level (for anyone who is interested) with a snazzy new menu which I'm quite pleased with actually! It allows the players to play either the Co-op or Versus versions of the game.....

The menu has lirrul sackbot you's playing golf.....altogether now!........aw.......;-)

Hi, not much i can really add to whats been said

the menu choice at the start works and is a cool feature, i found this game to be a cool and enjoyable one screen mini game, very, very good at what it is. Try and sell it to a phone company, would be great on one the more modern phones!

hi you, sorry i wanted to do a bigger feedback but all i can say is that i was not able to play the level.
i have a 4:3 normal tv and not a flatscreen or something and i don't saw myself.
i bet you'r level is cool! but i guess thats lbp2's fault that they switch to flat mode again when you play a level.
but maybe you can do something against it? and moving the player further in?

I shall have a look and try my best to address it. With it being a single screen game though, space is at a premium which is why I've stuck the golfers as far left as I could accomodate

Are they actually cut off or did you spread the arrows too far wide on the intial game load up?

well i don't saw the player. i was not knowing what to do pressed all buttons but nothing showed up, just the tip of the golf club ( or what ever the small blackdot moving there was) i saw after i restarted the level twice.
(i callibrated lbp2 for my smaller screen but don't worked.)

i think you are on the save side
who buys a ps3 if they don't got a flat tv?

even some mm picks have the problem for normal tv users like i see. so dunno its up to you if you change something or not. its fine.
