Looking for feedback on my handful of levels.

Archive: 13 posts

Hey all. I'm looking for some feedback on my levels (there's 13 of them, three being unlockable bonus levels). You can probably find them by searching for my PSN (gameguy888 still). I'm mostly looking for ways I could improve and any problems I might have left without realizing. I'm not getting much of any attention from people online, so I feel forced to ask for some here. >_>

Each level contains hidden prizes if you're the collector type of person. Later works tend to have more to offer at the price of them being hidden better.
Here's a list of my current works as of my edit:

Factory of Mystery:
This was my first level. I planned on making into a series of some sort, but decided against it in favor of messing around with less restricted level ideas. You'll find a factory that apparently appeared out of nowhere. Think you can get through it?

Ice is no Fun:
Obviously, there is no ice, so it's just glass. It certainly looks and acts like ice though. This level is a bit longer, and pretty puzzle oriented in some parts.

Light is no Fun:
For this one, you'll have to rely on the few light sources throughout the level to make your way to the end. I tried to use light in a variety of ways to help you along.

Museum Attack:
This level is a pretty big step up from the rest. In a nut-shell, some creatures are attacking an art museum filled with rare works of art. The trick with this level, is that there are lots of bombs in places that might blow up some rare works of art. If any of the rare art (identified by red boarders) is damaged, you won't get a prize at the end. If that weren't enough, this level contains my first attempt at a boss fight. You're going to need to know how to "throw" bombs with a jet pack for this one.

Skulldozer's Revenge:
I'm sure lots of you were fans of the Skulldozer level in story mode. I decided to give it a shot, and up the difficulty. The basic concept of this level is that Skulldozer has been stolen by someone who is making it go on another rampage. Think you can stop this thief?

Battle Blocks:
In this level, you get offered a cash prize if you can make it to the bottom of the Battle Blocks Tower. This tower is infested with creatures of my own creation. The owner of this tower certainly doesn't seem to think you stand a chance. Think you can prove him wrong?

The Sky Temple (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=t=5659)
Pretty lengthy description in thread above.

The rest of the levels are either Boss Rush levels (race to beat a boss for points), or some mini-game type levels. Check these out if you wish, but I'm more concerned about the levels listed above.

Thanks for the compliment!

Course, this thread is a bit out-dated, so I edited the first post a lot (I've made two more major levels since this first post, and I added level descriptions). Really, I suppose I should have put level descriptions in to begin with. <.<

Yeah the descriptions do help.

These levels are very well thought out. I love the dark level and that other level with the paintings. It must have taken you a long time to make it so there is no prize at the end if you let one of the paintings blow up.

Some of your levels are a bit challenging, but not impossible

In addition, your mini games are perfect for multiplayer!

Anyone looking for some fun multiplayer games should definitely check out your mini games

To be fair, it's really just the Box of Fire level that works well in multiplayer. I honestly haven't really made these levels to work well with more than one person. I plan to tweak a few things whenever I get around to it (I already did with Museum Attack, since those bomb emitters use to only allow one bomb out at a time, killing any real possible team efforts). I'm keeping multiplayer in mind since then, so there shouldn't be any real worries.

As for the paintings, it took a whole lot of magnetic switches, vanishing material, and such to get it to work. All of them so that if any of them are set off, the button releasing the prize at the end will be raised out of site. Also, I'll know if someone managed to beat the level like this. You get a whole lot of points for pulling this off too.

If I had a way to do this, I would have done it from the beginning.

I've made several various tweaks to things in these levels over time. Not much, but some things should be fixed and/or easier to figure out.

One major change I've done, is that I've removed the keys to some levels, and let people play the Boss Rush levels they use to unlock (you just fight the boss again, but in a race format).

I've also made The Sky Temple (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=t=5659). This level contains a boss too, but I've not made a Boss Rush yet since it's still fairly new.

Thanks for checking out the Legion and leaving your thoughts. In return I went and played 3 of your levels, here are my thoughts:

The Sky Temple:

I had high hopes here but the truth is that I found the level incredibly tedious and frustrating. The concept of using balloons for the entire level is great but in practice it just didn't work out well. There was this one section where I was literally jumping around for about 5 minutes and the balloon just did not want to go higher. That is when I gave up. I like the color pallette and the material selection but there really is work to be done before one could consider this level fun (which should be the ultimate goal).

Museum Attack:

I had a lot of trouble with this level as well due to the fact that I kept getting blown up for no good reason. I don't think killing the player without warning is ever a good thing unless that is part of the story you are trying to tell in the level. I also lost all of my lives trying to throw bombs at the boss. You really need to ask yourself whether something is challenging or frustrating because there is a big difference. I would suggest taking out all those forced deaths and redoing the boss. The boss is not very nice to look at and the gameply here could use some work. On the plus side I like how you actually used all the framed paintings that are acquired in story mode, I have not really seen those used before

Firebox

This is not even a level but a minigame and I have to say that it was my favorite of the three by far. It's just a fun, original concept and would probably be more fun if played with friends. I also loved how you added the firebox at the scoreboard, very cool and it made me smile. Everyone should check out this mini-game, I personally thought it was great!

I noticed you have 18 published levels. If your goal is the first creator to reach 20 published levels then guess what, you are almost there. If however your goal is to put out fun, high quality material then I would encourage you to take your time and playtest as much as possible (that includes testing with other creators who will always be able to provide you with invaluable feedback). In any event I think you probably learned a lot creating all those levels so hoepfully you can take that knowledge and create something really special for your next one

Sky Temple:
I figured this was the case. The trick to jumping with those balloons is to use momentum to go higher. Actually, in a lot of cases, I've seen people play this level with me for some reason, they all seem to drop the first balloon after getting over the wall, even though the text (now very clearly) states not to lose it.

Also, I suppose you're talking about the part where the ceiling pushes the balloon down to you. Yeah, I meant to make that floor lower ages ago, but kept forgetting about it. If you were trying to get up to the higher area jumping with the balloon, you're actually suppose to jump on top of it as it's moving upward. Either way, I'm probably dropping this part entirely, cause even I'm finding annoying now.

The only other part where balloon jumping should be troubling is during the race segment, but I figured many people would have trouble with that, and rigged the checkpoint to let you skip it if you die.

Museum Attack
Seems you've pointed out another thing I forgot to fix. I meant to put a warning that the various switches around activate traps. Though, other than place where the bombs fall after jumping over those fire spitting things, where exactly were you getting blown up? There shouldn't be any place where this happens.

To be fair, this was my first attempt at a boss. Admittedly, I designed the thing way too fast and didn't really put nearly as much effort in it as I did later bosses. I suppose remaking it wouldn't be too unreasonable.

I feel sorta bad that I spent so much time rigging the paintings to detect damage, and no one seems to be able to pass the level.

Box of Fire
I assume since you mentioned the fire box around the goal (something I actually just threw in at the last minute), you played the second version. Yes, I seem to keep getting very positive feedback about both of them. I have to wonder sometimes if I should just stick with making mini games... they seem to get better feedback than my main levels. =

For the record, it is more fun with more people. ;D

Actually, I'm not shooting for 20 actual levels. It's kinda just happening as I keep throwing ideas out there. I myself have been playing these levels quite a bit. My main issue is I can't seem to get a lot of people to play them to tell me problems. As it is, you're the second person here ever provide helpful feedback to me on any of my levels. For that, I thank you.
